Doncaster has failed Scottish football fans

503

Alasdair Lamont’s article for BBC this evening after meeting SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, is bound to provoke debate.  The article is titled, “Newco Rangers could avoid sanctions from SPL”, although that claim is not supported by any direct quote from Doncaster.  It could be that Doncaster made a supporting comment which wasn’t covered in the article, or that Alasdair is extrapolating from Doncaster’s comment that he is “not entirely sure why a distinction is made between the two routes [CVA or a Newco] out of administration”.

Before we open on what Doncaster actually said, it’s worth pointing out that he has never previously indicated that a Newco was likely to gain access to the SPL without penalty, despite being asked this question directly on a number of occasions.  Indeed, he has proposed a number of penalties for such an eventuality, although any decision will now rest with a general meeting of the clubs, which he will not have a vote at.

To what Doncaster said:

“Newco is typically the way businesses in general escape from administration.”

Oh no it’s not.  Businesses, in general, conclude their period of administration either by emerging with a CVA or by going out of business.  The swathes of business failures across the UK in recent years has seen only a tiny percentage phoenix as a Newco.  This statement is erroneous and misleading.

Doncaster added:

“I am not entirely sure why a distinction is made between the two routes out of administration.”

Let me explain, Mr Doncaster.  In Scottish football history, no club has ever come out of administration as a Newco.  Ever.  Third Lanark, Airdrieonians and Gretna all failed to achieve a CVA and went out of business.  Morton, Clydebank (now Airdrie United), Motherwell, Dundee (twice) and Livingston (twice), all achieved a CVA and remained in football.

Mr Doncaster must think that we are all daft, have no access to Scottish football records and have a complete ignorance of how “businesses in general” operate.  He wishes to provide a Newco-Rangers with direct access to the top league in Scottish football, the first time anything like this has ever happened.  Perhaps being frank with us on this matter would be advisable.

Even if I was of a mind to agree with Doncaster that rules should be changed to allow Newco direct access to the SPL, his feeble attempts to convince fans of the merits of this idea would leave me ruing the inadequacy of his plan’s execution.

All of this will be a welcome distraction from the main issue for Doncaster.  The SPL allowed last season to conclude without letting clubs or fans know if Rangers competed with ineligible players.  They have been in possession of the information required for over six weeks now but have no intention of letting fans know the outcome until after Newco is voted into the league.

It’s too late now.  Doncaster has had his chance to report and his inquiry has failed to do so.  It has now been taken out of his hands. He has failed you and all Scottish football fans.

It’s time for football executives to relinquish power and for the old media, the fans, the new media and the authorities to take control.

  1. With obscene haste Pat Fenlon of Hibs will face a Scottish Football Association judicial panel for a gesture allegedly aimed at Hearts fans on Saturday.

Meanwhile Ally McCoist and Sandy Jardine of Rangers are allowed to rabble rouse and put the health and well being of fellow Scots in jeopardy all in the name of prolonging the privileged existence of the moral lepers and suited fraudsters that populate their club.

There is something very sick about that.

So Peter has no problem berating a Football Association from another country over a few kickabout games, but won’t berate our own SFA & SPL over a matter which could kill the game in this country???

    Berate them over what exactly?

  6. Have you read the interview with Doncaster were he made up stories about how a newco is the most common way out of administration?

Recent events and the coming weeks will be the most important in the history of Scottish Football and more importantly in our history. What has anyone in a positon of power at Celtic PUBLICALLY said on these matters? Didlly squat, except gies yir money or we’ll give away your seat?

He’s hinted at our position but he is allowing the process to take place.

I’m certain also that he’s doing his job behind the scenes.

CFC are playing a straight bat on this one and are firmly fixed through their DIGNIFIED approach at the top of the moral high ground.

Mate I revisited your post of earlier and I read it with a heavy heart.

There is no monetary value associated with morals, you either have them or you don’t. Their very existence is the extent of their worth, to excuse them for financial gain is crude in the extreme.

If the integrity of the SPL and its members is lacking it is onerous of Celtic to fulfill their obligation to the ethos of our club and our very own mission statement by pursuing justice to the fullest extent of all law; If Celtic fail to do that, then their integrity is worthless.

They will have sold the soul of our club for coin. Or so it will be in a lot of Supporters opinions.

Celtic Football Club SOCIAL MISSION STATEMENT

Celtic Football Club is legendary and, as with most legends, as much myth as fact surrounds its history and what the club stands for today. The Social Mission Statement aims simply to define what the club stands for and seeks to promote within society.

    History

Celtic Football Club was founded in 1888. Its principal founder was a Marist Brother named Walfrid. The Club had two principal aims:

    • The first was to raise funds to provide food for the poor of the East End of Glasgow, an area of the city that was greatly impoverished and had a very high rate of infant mortality.

    • Within the East End was a large Irish community and friction was growing between native Glaswegians and the new influx of Irish. Brother Walfrid saw the need for social integration and his vision was a football club that Scottish and Irish, Protestants and Catholics alike could support. A new football club would be a vehicle to bring the communities together and this was the second aim.

    • The Marist brother sought for the club to have both a Scottish and Irish identity and hence the club’s name, Celtic, representing a bridge of cultures across the Irish sea.

Current Positioning of Celtic Football Club

Celtic Football Club is a Scottish football club with proud Irish links. The primary business of Celtic is as a football club. It is run on a professional business basis with no political agenda. However, the Club has a wider role and the responsibility of being a major Scottish social institution promoting health, well-being and social integration.

    Who Is Celtic For?

Celtic is for people who want to support a football club that strives for excellence in Scotland and in Europe, is proud of its history, supportive of its local community and seeks to support the following aim:

“To maximise all opportunities to disassociate the Club from sectarianism and bigotry of any kind. To promote Celtic as a club for all people, regardless of sex, age, religion, race or ability.”

    Summary

Celtic is a club for everyone who believes in football as a medium for healthy pleasure, entertainment and social integration. The Club always has been and always will aim to be the team of the people.

  20. Fine Spring Day in the Chilterns…

Excellent article Paul, I stated after reading the CST’s summation of their meeting with Mr Doncaster, that under his stewardsip the SPL is Not fit for purpose i.e. Managing and Regulating the top tier of Scottish Football.

As the push back on his amoral stand has increased, inversely ND has become more vociferous and staunch over RFCia (from whispers in D&P’s ear to Broadasting via the MSM), so why has he persisted with his erroneous commentary?

Could it be he realy has no idea what a CVA vs NewCo decision consists of and the resulting implications in Business Law and Footballing Regulations?

If so, he is not on top of his responsibilities and should resign.

Could it be that he is all too aware of the above but wishes to circumvent these issues, for commercial interests?

If so, he he doesn’t understand the scope of his responsibilities and should resign.

Now, it could be a bit more intriguing, either he’s been nobbled, no suggestion or evidence for that.

Or he knows that “events dear boy, events…” are going to ensure that the unencumbered Newclub in the SPL pipedream will be crushed before the sham needs to be finialised on his desk, allowing him to placate the baying bears.

If so, he should be sacked!

  21. Celtic Football Club Social Charter

    Why have a Social Charter?

Celtic has always been more than a football club. Part of that extra quality of Celtic has been the social dimension linked to the reasons Brother Walfrid founded Celtic back in the 1880s.

Celtic Football Club has changed a great deal in recent years. The ownership of the Club has been transformed from few to many. The finances of the Club have been placed on a sound and solid basis. Celtic Park, while remaining on the site of past triumphs, has developed beyond recognition.

Celtic will continue to change in order to meet the aspirations of its fans and to live up to the principles behind Brother Walfrid’s reasons for founding the Club. This will be carried out within a sound business plan ensuring development of the football set up and continued improvement for Celtic Park.

Jock Stein always sought to impress upon the fans the importance of the founding principles of the Club and the need for the fans to live up to those principles.

High expectations of management, players and supporters continues to be the norm at Celtic Park and the Social Charter aims to set out the best that Celtic stands for.

    Celtic Social Charter

Celtic Football Club, from the supporters to the management and owners, welcome the statement of intent in its Social Charter to set out the values and actions that are part of the best that Celtic stands for…

The best that Celtic stands for is supporting the charitable principles of its founder.

The best that Celtic stands for is promoting health and well-being, understanding and positive social integration.

The best that Celtic stands for is as an inclusive organisation being open to all regardless of age, sex, race, religion or disability.

The best that Celtic stands for is upholding a shared set of positive values including success, fair play, and appreciation of skills.

The best that Celtic stands for is building on the renowned qualities of our supporters.

  23. On the old season ticket renewal debate, I renewed cos I don’t think the club can wait for the thems debacle to unravel – we have CL qualifiers soon and I expect that ST income will be a major factor in deciding what amounts we can invest. Not renewing currently only punishes Celtic for actions they may or may not take in the future.

    Howe

  24. Got my renewal pack (x2) in the day before the trophy presentation at Celtic Park. Left it aside because I was in some doubt if i should renew or not until some clarity was forthcoming re the mongrels future in the game.

Came home after the game , went online and renewed both season tickets; paying in full. (In part i suppose because we have two cracking seats and good people around. Thought i might lose the seats if I wait.)

Still not sure if i’ve done the right thing.

The last time sporting integrity was mentioned also involved the mongrel. They wanted an extension to the season, but at that time Peter Lawell, on behalf of the club came out publicly against any extension request stating that sporting integrity would be compromised.

Similar situation now only on a far larger scale.

Sporting integrity must be at the heart of the game or as others have posted previously, whats the point.

My seats are safe now, but if the mongrel are allowed a free resurection at the cost of sporting integrity then I’ll take the financial hit and walk away from scottish football for good.

Sporting integrity Peter, first, last and always. “It’s the only show in town!”

It was important before, it’s doubly important now.
