Doncaster wriggling with rules

846

SPFL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, is clear on the subject of offensive singing at football games: “It remains the SPFL’s position that if it can be established that clubs have done everything required in overall management of the event pre-match, during the game and post-match then they have no case to answer”.

This may be the case, but if clubs fail to communicate appropriate instructions to fans after one transgression, which is quickly followed by a second transgression, Doncaster’s defence is moot.  The club has failed to do “everything required” pre-match and post-match, and is guilty under the rules, if applied.

Doncaster has employed a rhetorical technique.  When faced with a difficult scenario, make a statement which is in itself true, but the parameters of which do not match the scenario.

The chief executive of the Scottish Professional Football League’s comments this morning appear like an attempt to protect a member club from the League’s own rules.  He is paid to ensure rules are applied, not negated.

It is no business of his to defer responsibility to the police, or the Justice Ministry, which concocted this inept Offensive Behaviour Act in order to “equalise” criminality, where it didn’t exist, but will not lift a finger on this issue.

What do you know about Andy McAtee?  He signed for Celtic from Mossend Hibs in 1910 and left in 1924, having played 438 games on the right wing, scoring 75 goals.  He won six league titles and four Scottish Cups and was one of the earliest Celtic heroes.  During the Great War he fought in the Alps, and in Haig’s bloody field in the Somme.

When he, and other members of our first genuinely great team, retired, Celtic found it impossible to replace them.  We didn’t win another six titles until Inter manager, Helenio Herrera, watched our title win in May 1967.

The Celtic Graves Society mark his final resting place at Kilsyth Cemetery (G5 0TA) at 12:00 on Saturday 28 February.  After a graveside blessing, there will be a Q&A with Jim Craig, Tom Boyd and Pat McCluskey, at The Curling Stone pub, High Craigends, Kilsyth.  If you can make it along and support the great work of the Society, get there.

Groups such as NBM usually start of with well intentioned motives but soon or later as they are dependant on grants / donations from government authorities charities Lottery Fund ect the urge for “self preservation ” kicks in and begin to find themselves all over the place when it comes to what position they will take on any given issue.

There is also a case to be made that a lot of people usually but not always who are middle class semi retired professionals who see jobs / positions in these groups as a means to acquire a certain profile and/or simply an income

The North has seen a plethora of similar groups spring up over the past decade. They mostly come under the heading of Victims groups dealing with the fallout of the conflict here. One such group is WAVE .

  7. I think we all know nothing will be done. Appears to be a nod to sing their songs a little louder this Friday.

I recently watched a clip online about the respected judge that sat in, on one of the panels

re Sevco, i can’t remember which one, theres been a few.

However the judge went on to explain, about the threats, phone calls from ulster, the bomb squad showing him how to open his mail, his family’s details and schools posted online etc. It really freaked this guy out.

Looks like the bully boys will always threaten and intimidate their way to a result in this country.

I dont know how true it is but with Parma going out of the game big Victor Wanyamas brother plays for them and will be free to sign for any other team as he is now a free agent. It is rumoured that Celtic are showing an interest in the player. H.H.

Point I am making is Independance or not anyone foolish enough to believe anything will ever be done about this is just stupid. It takes brave people to stand up and change these things and many years. it wouldn’t matter whether it was union or not there are not those brave people with the time to make the difference.

Yes, I remember the trial well, for some reason he wanted everyone to believe that someone else was wearing his “signature” orange jacket that day. I also remember Donald Findlay’s plea for leniency on his behalf after he was found guilty. He stated that he knew the family well, they were fine upstanding people, even although he knew that not to be the case.

When is the next Sevco FC game ?

If the SFA /SPFL were serious ( I know , I know ) about addressing this issue then they should contact Sevco FC before the next game and ask/ tell them to inform their supporters that if the sectarian and racist songs happen at the next game then action will be taken .

Police Scotland should also be asked what they are doing to stop this sectarian / racist behaviour amongst the Sevco support , how many were arrested at the Raith Rovers game or afterwards ?

  16. Joe Filippis Haircut on

One way to try to sort out sectarian singing would be to say that the next game after a club have been found guilty should be played behind closed doors. If after that there is another episode increase it to two games behind closed doors. That would both hurt the support and the club but it has to be for all clubs not just one. H.H.

I know Doncaster is a buffoon. But he is a buffoon used as a mouthpiece by his bosses. Its no use complaining about no repercussions for the Monkeys chattering their bigotry, when the clubs voted on this.Nil By Mouth(yes I know)have been asking to have the toothless present laws changed for years. They will try again in May.This would empower the SPFL to fine, deduct points, close. These options are not available now.Who voted this in?.Who knows if it was unanimous,or majority, but we were in on the vote.

A wee sense of reality needed sometimes.

That works OK when the vast majority are culpable. I would not be too chuffed if Celtic Park were to be closed because a small number sang an Irish song that wasn`t even sectarian!

  20. Sadly predictable from Doncaster. I said before that the SPFL would do nothing to harm the club they’ve bent over backwards to support to this point. Also said that SPFL and SFA ‘rules’ are more like ‘guidelines’. Doncaster hides behind factually correct statements but ignores the evidence. They don’t ask the question cause they know they won’t like the answer. Couldn’t regulate a bowel movement.

Like other posters I’d like to know why is this clown still in a job? He’s obviously meeting somebody’s criteria but it ain’t what’s required for the good of Scottish football as a whole. Facile statements, can’t find a sponsor, talk of ‘Armageddon’ when negotiating a new TV contract. Even the banks would’ve hunted this clown.

Jungle Jim Hot Smoked. Thats a fair comment so if someone near you started to sing a sectarian song you and other fans could well drown them out with a non sectarian song. However, it would mean clubs sitting down with supporters and drawing up a list of non sectarian songs that could be used and the football authorities would have a copy of the list in return the football clubs and the authorities could give the supporters a list of songs that should be on the banned list. The only way to beat sectarian singing is to get agreement from all parties and everyone to have clear guidlines you would never get 100% agreement but a majority agreement should suffice. H.H.

  24. JFH

My preference would be for a deduction of points, say 5 points for a 1st offence, 10 for a 2nd, and so on, with expulsion from the following year’s cup if the song was sung in a cup tie. Furthermore, the offending club would not be licensed for Europe on the 1st offence. This should be a deterrent for any team’s fans.

The offending clubs would not take very long to stop the songs. I agree that this should apply to all clubs.

  25. Jungle Jim Hot Smoked on

    JFH

If the `problem`really was as the MSSM/SFA/SPFL pretend it is, then your suggestion would be valid.

It seems to me, though, that the Authorities in Scotland simply do not want to draw up a list of `sectarian` songs for the simple reason that only one Club sings them!

Were they to draw up a list which` evened things out`, they would look even more stupid/biased than they already are. It would contain songs which are clearly not sectarian.

The `sectarian problem` in Scottish football is not a Scottish football problem at all. It is a Sevco problem and, until this is recognised, nothing will happen.

    JJ

  26. Joe Filippis Haircut on

ger57. That is another way as you say but what you have shown is where there is a will there is a way to stop or at the very least minimise sectarian singing. The problem is currently is that the football authorities and the clubs dont have the will. H.H.

Their definition of what is sectarian can be found here http://nilbymouth.org/resources/history/

According to a few of the Dark side I’ve engaged with on Twitter this is apparent source of reference for what is sectarian and what isn’t.

Now you know. No legal or governmental reference just that.

  28. I think our one and only chance of beating Inter is to run them off their feet.Fantastic footballers in their team, but they did not look fit to me.Did not like the thought of going in to any tenacious tackles either. They attack very well.We cant switch off for a second or lose a runner. The fact is,as I said last night, they were blowing out of their @sses in the final quarter of the game.
