Don’t bet, tardy payers and immersed in our culture

1179

Quick question for you.  Which Scottish team has won their last four home games, scoring 13 goals in the process?  St Mirren are on a run of form at home.  One of those wins was against Second Division opposition, but remember, this season, Second Division teams are on a par with AC Milan in the early 90s.

Ross County scored four at St Mirren Park but St Mirren scored five, while Hearts were despatched 2-0.  This is a team with good home form who kept their squad in place over the international break.  My best advice to you is to avoid betting on this one.

Many clubs have trouble paying their bills but the problem with Hearts and their regular tardiness when it comes to wages, evident again this month, appears to be different.  Hearts cash balances will have peaked weeks, possibly months, ago.  From now on they will be eating into ‘reserves’, or more likely, accruing additional debt at their owner’s bank.  The club have been here many times before and Vlad has dipped into the equivalent of his commercial pocket to avoid an insolvency event but I’ve always found it curious why he didn’t do so on time.  It’s not as though anyone can be surprised pay day is coming.

As such, there appears to be a degree of control over late payment.  The money is always provided but not before pain is passed down from owner to earners, which is a bit curious.

For all his faults, and they are many, Romanov and other shareholders in Ukio Bankas have ‘invested’ countless millions in Hearts, money they are unlikely to get back with the residential property market so depressed.  They have also not exposed the club to outrageous fortune – the overwhelming majority of debt is owed to the bank itself, balances at HMRC and other creditors are low, and they pay their football debts.  This means that if Hearts go into administration, the route back through a CVA would be clear.  The only serious losers would be staff made redundant, while Ukio would face a write-off, perhaps already acknowledged internally.

I was surprised at the news Danny McGrain was appointed first team coach yesterday but also delighted.  Danny’s was not a name mentioned for the position when Alan Thompson left the club but he is immersed in the fabric and culture of our club.  ‘In the days of changing ways’ a strong thread of continuity is an invaluable asset in ensuring the new generations acquire the important elements of our identity.

We are a club in touch with all that is important.

…pfayr- liked your Lustig bet, he’s always hovering around the 6 yard box looking for scraps, will score 10+ goals this season.

I seem to remember when he just came to us that it was said he got a good number of goals from headers, so could be a good outside beat.

BARCELONA crock Gerard Pique is almost certainly OUT of their Champions League clash with Celtic.

The Spain stopper will definitely miss tonight’s La Liga match with Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor and Barca boss Tito Vilanova has vowed not to risk him in Tuesday night’s showdown at the Nou Camp — unless he makes a dramatic improvement.

Pique’s foot injury has plunged Barca into a Euro defensive crisis — with Carles Puyol, Dani Alves and Eric Abidal already ruled out.

That means Barca will field a makeshift backline against Celtic, with rookie Marc Bartra in contention.

SunSport understands that Hoops boss Neil Lennon will make his own judgement on the Catalan giants by flying out on a private jet immediately after today’s SPL game in Paisley.

Vilanova said: “Pique is not fully fit and we need to be careful with him as we have a lot of games coming up.

“He won’t play against Deportivo and we won’t risk him against Celtic unless he is 100 per cent fit. We are waiting on a decision from the medical staff.

“Will Bartra play? He’ll play when I think he should. I know him best.”

Vilanova refused to discuss the Celtic match — opting to focus on his domestic commitments. He revealed he is considering resting Lionel Messi for the Depor match — with the Argentine star making the long trek back from a World Cup qualifier in Chile this week.

But he hinted that hitman David Villa could be handed a start against the Hoops as he continues his return from a broken leg.

The Spain star was left out for the recent 2-2 draw with Real Madrid — but Vilanova insists he is edging back to his best.

He said: “Villa is returning from a very serious injury, but he’s doing better every day.

“Of course he wanted to play against Real — all players do. But he remains a central figure for us.”

Celtic will be facing arguably the best team in the world at the Nou Camp.

But new boss Vilanova hit back at suggestions that his Barca side are not as pleasing on the eye as Pep Guardiola’s all- conquering team.

He said: “People are saying we have a more direct style and less possession but I don’t agree with that.

“I don’t see much of a difference from last season. We have done well but you can always do better.”

Also surprised and delighted to see Danny McGrain appointed first team coach. Danny was a great Celtic player, still a great Celt. One of the best captains we ever had. His courage and guts as well as his class shone through time after time.

Below is a link to “Not the view” report on the 4v2 game when we beat Rangers to win the league in 1979. For me probably Danny’s finest game in the hoops. The way he drove the team on in the second half was immense. A true captains role that night as he did on many occasions.

I am sure he will be able to pass on his experience and be able to influence the current young squad we have to achieve their potential.

Well down the scoreboard, 25pts, the course was remarkable considering the pounding it had taken and the weather on the day was not too bad, but not quite Hellenic either!

Captain Ryan did a grand job considering he absentees and late call offs, off to a good start, will give him another go before calling an EGM. :-)

I think you exaggerate a little when you say no other country in the world would have dealt with a similar case to Rangers in their country.

Eastern European football is rife with examples of cheating, match fixing, cutting corners, paying under the table etc etc.

We are not privy to every league in the world’s practices and beyond Scotland and Ireland very few people who are not clued up as to what the animals did are totally in the picture the way we are.

My boss who is Canadian but a huge football fan who knows a fair but about the European leagues needed me to explain the thing to him because he only gets snipets on football sites that are international in nature but lack the specificity that your RTC blog, CQN or other sites have.

He and the rest of the world have an excuse – they’re not really that bothered but for OUR own media and the fans of Deadco they buried their heads in the sand in hope.

In Eastern Europe football teams get funding from questionable sources all the time and even the guys we know about are dodgy. Romanov for example – look at how he behaves with rules about wages. Abramovich? how did he become the billionaire he became in a former Communist country? That story is common across the region on a smaller scale but folk in Slovakia tell me Slovan Bratislava get leeway with their finances shall we say. I have no idea if it is all true but people talk.

  16. Celticbhoy- mate of mine is a Rosenborg fan, said Lustig is an “offensive player” – not in an Ian Black sense- he likes to get forward at every opportunity.

I’m only pointing out that corruption in a lot of countries doesn’t even make it as far as where we are now- it is better covered up.

There are establishments in every country but I agree many if not most of them are not motivated by Religion or Sectarianism but I think it would be naive to say these things played no part elsewhere. I and I suspect you are not au fait with the make up of every country in the world that’s where I think you exaggerate.

You’ll get no argument from me that they’ve been helped and largely because of “cultural” reasons but as we all know pride comes before a fall and their feeling of being untouchable stretched so far that the cataclysmic collapse makes it all the more sweet for us. It isn’t surprising it happened when the same folk who worked for the club at the time of the EBT scheme simultaneously held office in the SFA. I’d be surprised if any cases of corruption in world football did not have within their sordid tales similar examples of vested interests running or being involved with their governing bodies.

Minus evidence could the Italian FA have done anything? If that evidence had not been so absolute would they have?

I think it is legit to say guys who made billions in former Communist countries didn’t wake up one morning with stock-piles of cash when everyone in the country had shares in the public services and you were only supposed to have a limited number of shares per person – hmmmmm as they say and that’s all I’ll say.

    Great summary. Good conquers.

Celtic, open to everyone, from the first moment of the first day. If you love football, you’re welcome. If you love Celtic, you get a hug into the bargain. We don’t do turning away.

You and PF Ayr have both mentioned the media.

Amazingly important points. The hubris, the vile superiority bombast sold a lot of rags. Many of the contributors were fans with typewriters, later upgraded to laptops. Many of those in positions of authority in media organisations were too. Others just cashed in. The dynamic of upset Celtic fans and they engage, tickle Rangers’ tummy and they engage proceeded to give us a grotesque public picture of Scottish football, and the distortion got bigger and bigger until, even now, there is no turning back. The party’s over, but a lot of people ate a lot of lamb and made a lot of money on the way.

Scotland’s media needs to be torn up and begun again. Tabula rasa.
