Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

  1. If commons was our coach would he be sitting in dug out with his arms crossed

I am big commons fan. The only player in our squad who has any footballing brains

    Lawell out or boycott stores

    Paul lead the way

  2. RD and Scott Brown should apologise to the supporters instead of making excuses in the media.

    Clueless.

  3. have to say when I read how Molde play I thought if Ronnie does not change his system for this game we have had it. I agree with Paul the tatics were appallingl, Commons was our only hope of a goal so why take him off? I do blame him for his reaction. It is time to drop the non performers Izzy & Johnanson & Brown for a start. I just cannot believe Ronnie could be so stupid as to play such an open game when we have no one of the claibre to play it. Brown is not disciplined enough to play holding midfield. The difference between last year and this is Craig Gordon performed miracles to keep us in the tournament this year he has not been good.

  4. one more hing we did not start the game well we play boring timid football all passing and no penetration.

    The green man

Feeble comments from brown but to be fair what can he say without roasting some of these rockets that are in the team right now?

our defence is giving teams a 2 and 3 goal start every game in Europe and in brown’s shoes I’d have been tempted to say something along the lines of “but what else can you do with some of the dross that’s been signed by this club in recent years, I mean boyata and Blackett are the biggest pair of tits to come out of Manchester since bet lynch was in her pomp.”

  6. I think the Commons outburst can only end with either him or Deila leaving the club. He was too public he could of had is blow-up in the dressing-room.

  7. THE GLORIOUS BALANCE SHEET , 10:15 AM

I mentioned it last night and have mentioned it for some while during SPL games.

Not only is there no high tempo pressing game, Celtic have, as Sutton pointed out, resorted to one extra touch that slows the game down even more. It’s like watching paint dry

  8. Last night was the final straw for me.I was a ronny fan but not now.commons went a bit mental but I don’t blame him.everyone knows you should have subbed Johnson but ronny see’some things different.izzy at the back is finished.need changes at the back. Even the keeper could do with a couple of games on the bench.also Scott Brown saying we didn’t turn up well when are use going to turn up.every big game we don’t turn up.if pulling on the celtic top isn’t any motivation for you in any game you should leave.no more excuses.we need a lot more pride wearing the hoops and two upfront wouldn’t go amiss.very unhappy bhoy

  9. No disrespect to John Kennedy, gentleman that no doubt he is, but if he is responsible for coaching that defence, well I am sorry time to go. JK was with the U21’s beforehand and has no experience in the European climate, a more experienced coach should have been brought in. I like RD and want him to be a success but if rumours are true its the two Johns who will end up being his downfall. Think its time for the club/management to issue a clear the air message.

On another issue, don’t know what Antony Stokes has done wrong but its got the same sentiment of Commons written all over it. Surely the fans deserve a bit of clarity???

  10. AS I am sure some of the better informed posters will know there is a degree of disharmony behind the scenes, this boil needs to be lanced. It was evident pre match at the team hotel yesterday.

  11. The Battered Bunnet on

    Making mistake is human.

    Repeating them shows wanting.

Might also point out that, however convinced Ronny is that his approach to the Game, or a specific match, is the ‘right one’, he doesn’t seem to have another one when the right one turns out to be the wrong one.

Ronny’s not learning. I can handle adverse results, poor performances, these things happen. I’m fast running out of confidence that Ronny knows what to do to change it.

Can someone tell me how a player who was invisible for 75 of the 76 minutes he was on the park was going to win the game for us in the other 14 minutes?

  14. Big Pierres 2 front teeth on

Loved what commons did and so did every other person in the pub I watched it in! Glad it was public because it had to be done! Was ronny’s biggest backer last season but there is no fast flowing expansive football. I don’t know what it’s meant to be but I’ve had enough of it and I’m sick to my stomach of whats being served up!

I looked at the images of the fans there soaked and freezing last night and felt terrible for them especially. Huge changes needed at all levels in Celtic park because it is not acceptable anymore!

  15. Sunny -low 20s -way down south .

Mood lifted by the presence of Maw And Paw Kingfisher and this year’s sprogs preening themselves on a terrace wall .

Last night -No surprise . . Tactically inept . .If you insist on playing a system you need players who are capable of playing that system. If you don’t have the necessary don’t try to do it ..Celtic were wide open last night . Old git me was reminded of a long time ago Crime ad on Scottish tele ———” Open windae -that’s handy “.

Add compounding the error by playing the full backs even further up the parkthan usual and you end up gifting the opposition the time and space to have a party . .The pedestrian crab passing guff doesn’t help..

Off oot to pick some Olives ———- not a good crop this year —— been too much rain.

  16. TGBS

Honestly….Its breaking my heart to see a Celtic team with no heart and guts…rolling over to the likes of Molde.

    We gave up….simple as that.

Scott Brown always gets found out in Europe…..He can swagger against Hamilton or Motherwell, that’s about it.

No fight in the team, just more excuses in the media.

The players who earn obscene money….didn’t like the rain, and couldn’t handle it….so they just chucked it.

    Pathetic performance.

I thought there was a lot of good one-touch play v Fenerbahce (first 40 mins at least). Can’t explain why it went so bad yesterday. Molde were very well drilled and hard to break down. Needed someone to be making forward runs but nobody was.

  18. Celtic’s apathy-tumblweed laden journey will bump along until, the died huns come back and catch us sleeping and mibbery us.

That is the medicine….from the medicine mhan.

You’ll no like the taste but…the end result will be worth it….you must believe that.

Some Celtic supporters think that, the war is over and the big-bad-ugly-huns wulny be back.

Well, yer inviting all that comes yer way.

Mediocre skelps on the chin like last nights will seem like the halcyon days compared to the poison that the huns will stuff us with…….if, ye dont let the medicine work.

Get it doon ye and, get the board / PL / DD…..oot.

  19. The battered bunnett

Peter lawell is responsible for all the goings on at Celtic park. He has overseen failure upon failure

His policies have put us in a position on the park where wee teams in Europe are favourites against us

Anybody who spins for this is culpable

The fans have to unite to change

Cyber space is important in this process

Paul67 is the biggest cyberspace personality amongst the Celtic fans

If he started a new celts for change it would roll faster that the early nineties

    Over to you Paul

  20. Dearie me. Don’t know how you persevere with this Paul, hopefully you skim the comments at most.

I remember years ago reading one of the older guys on the blog suggesting you treat CQN like Paul’s house. We’re all invited in for a blether about Celtic, speak to people like you would if you were face to face, and at the very least flush the toilet after you’ve used it.

Some of you guys prefer to run into the living room, shite on the rug and then point and laugh like Nelson in the Simpsons.

  22. Morning all.

Weather is as bad as I feel.

    Paul67.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The light went out. I thought we simply lost confidence when they scored. Personally, I thought Commons and Brown particularly let us down badly. They should be experienced enough to take responsibility. Last night, no one did.

  23. ST better idea you start your own Celts for change blog after all you’ve got all the answers. i wish you every success. H H Hebcelt

I want a clear out from top to bottom Kev but you have to mention the deid mob at every opportunity. You’ve not supported Celtic for a long time but love to talk about thems

Ye know what’s really needed here?…….For this hunlike attitude to take root and flourish….then Celtic fans will take aleaf from the real huns book….ye know, the real huns before the arrival of the beast when they stayed away in their droves and then got the changes that they needed…..before Murray went crazy and drove them over the cliff.

  26. Big Pierre’s two front teeth

I’dve thought it was pretty self-explanatory.

You been hibernatin’ for the last 15 years?

  27. GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL, 10:46 AM

True, but I’d expected that those spells would be norm, and not the exception, by now. Sadly the short, sideways, three touch passing, that accounts for so much Celtic possession, looks to be the natural state of affairs.
