Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

well done on the windfall. Did the cheque bounce ?

  2. Thursday was a debacle and has been analysed to death. Over the last few days the Commons incident has seen a thousands even millions of words spoken about it.

Commons has previous of make self serving statements. After Juve he blamed Efe and after Malmo he absolved himself from blame.

Was his reaction another self serving statement or even worse a planned statement at the first opportunity that was presented?

A public questioning of the management to suit certain players agendas?

He’s made this situation all about him. If he is dropped tomorrow that is the story. If he plays and scores tomorrow that is the story. He is now the narrative.

I’m off the opinion that Ronny has until after the Europa League. Then the board need to make the decision if they see him as the man to lead us back to the top table.

Truthfully, that we are still relying on Neil Lennons players says all we need to know about progress.

Anyway Tam Rogic to score first tomorrow.

  3. Bada Agree. We need to get back to winning ways and playing good football asap. However I feel there could be a muted atmosphere and not a great crowd at CP tomorrow. A couple of early goals will settle everyone down. HH

Ajax game, what time are you due into Glasgow, would gladly meet up and talk rubbish about all things Celtic, still remember back in January time you responded to one of my first of many posts of nonsense, would be delighted to buy you a drink of your choice

  5. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Gearoid at 9.35. wonderful words at the end of your post.

Its my son’s birthday the night of the Ajax game, it would be nice if our team gave him the best present he could get, us beating them.

After their fans antics the night before and at the game two years ago, it would be good if more attention is paid to their horrible fans by our just as horrible polis.

Roy, Mark Reid made sure the late Davie Cooper knew he wouldn’t have an easy game against him.

A game we beat them 3 1 at Celtic Park , Mark hit Cooper really hard but fairly . Cooper went flying over Mark and then didn’t have a big impact for the rest of the game.

Is that the same son that want s to beat the The Rangers (sic) ?

My young nephews can’t wait to pummel them next season, not for me, not for you and not for many, but am afraid a lot of the young team want them back, I know for a fact my two nephews are looking for payback for when they were growing up, they got it flung in their face and that mob that liquidated without them flinging it back in their pals faces…..

Most of us might never want them to darken our door but they are like their Crown, it’s just a show with eff all to back them up, Masterton & Murray have already effed off with all of the BoS’s dough
