Don’t blame defenders, this one was down to tactics

1712

It’s a well-established fact that we don’t have Beckenbauer and Baresi at the back, so the reason why we chose to play so high up the field is the most alarming element of last night’s debacle.

Dedryck was bound to misplace a pass, or Efe was bound to misread play. We all knew this. Regret over the last time mistakes like this were made doesn’t mean they won’t happen again. So when the inevitable occurred, our two full backs were 30 yards in front of the line of opposition attack, with our defensive mids well into opposition territory.

Efe’s failure to cover Kamara and Dedryck’s pass were consequences of the main mistake of the night, which was tactical.  We didn’t lose the opening goal because of a bad pass, it was lost because we left an acre of Norway unattended.

Ronny, you should never have left so much space at the back away from home in Europe, we’re clearly not good enough for such an open system, not even close.  We’ve learned nothing since what was supposed to be a lesson in Warsaw, when the same expansive errors cost us.  Molde played rope-a-dope football, they could have watched us against Malmo, Maribor and Legia, as each opened their home games against us in exactly the same manner.

It must be an absolute joy to face a European opponent at home who leaves so much space at the back, begging to be exploited.  If we had played with the same tactics we used in Amsterdam I’ve no doubt we would have won the game – no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team.

There’s more.  After dominating possession and creating genuine chances, the defeat looked inevitable from the 11th minute when we went behind. Body language changed in an instant and Celtic went out like a light.  I’ll spare you what I said at the time in case it’s misconstrued, but the evidence suggests there’s more to worry about than repeating the same tactical mistakes.

Celtic have nine months and one and a half transfer windows to get ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.  There’s plenty of time to put things right, but we can’t sleepwalk into another failure.  More immediately, we could be out of a cup if we don’t pull our act together this week.

The original Holy Goalie, our own John Fallon, will be signing copies of his book, and no doubt giving you his thoughts on current events, at the Supporters’ Club on London Road on Sunday from 12:30.  All are welcome.  There’s live entertainment too, so get along and check it out.

Sadly out of those 8 wins for Ronny -50% have been against part time Icelandic teams!Nowhere good enough for me HH

  5. I think if DD offered up his shares to the general public, then yes, lots of people would take them up, millionaires and thruppence ha’penny guys.

    you know,

like we did 3 times before.

  6. We have reached the point of no return with RD,the damage is done, you can’t put the shite back in the donkey.Time for a change is right now.

  7. we have spent enough money on players, problem is we are throwing good money to people who are buying players who don’t fit his system.we should have a system/ tactics that suit the players we have.

how much money should we spend to beat teams like molde seventh in there league?? I would say that there were not to many molde players on a few thousand a week never mind 30k.

  8. I find it difficult to fathom any reaction to a Celtic defeat other than abject misery…………….but it seems, at least on here, to spur a kind of spiteful fervour in the odd wan

    ……or two (?).

    Remarkable.

  9. Watched the first 20 minutes last night, then switched aff….knowing Celtic would not come back.

So easy for any European opposition to play against Celtic……..We play from Goalkeeper to full back / Central defender…….across the park 4 times…play it to DefMid….back to Central defender…then pass it to opposition……taking 20 passes to cross the halfway line..

That’s fine if you are 1 up away from home, and looking comfortable…..

Whatever happened to hunting in packs to close down the opposition…….

Why do we need 4 at the back & 2 Def Midfielders when the opposition are looking to play on the break….BTW this was the home teams tactics…it’s how they play……did we have them watched?

  10. My friends in Celtic,

Nobody can disagree that our performance last night can at best be described as inept.

However, can anybody argue that this much maligned team will not win the league by double figures. And possibly both cups into the bargain.

Where our problem lies is self explanatory.

    HH.

  11. Paul

“no one in that Molde squad would get into the Celtic team “-

That comment is so far wide of the mark it misses the board completely, but then again I guess that was the intention.

  12. Frustrating night, I think we had good control without really threatening in the last third for a large proportion of this game. Molde play a very simple (orclike) style, play very deep and compact without the ball then quickly on the turnover moving the ball into the available space creating one on one scenarios and easier chances.

I know it’s a different era for us, but when O’Neil and Lennon crushed this kind of opposition they would match up, copy their style give them the ball draw them out and punish them after getting ahead we would keep the ball and the orcs would self combust in rage. Hopefully this game will teach us an important lesson, not the fans we have seen it all, but the staff and players should realize there are many ways to skin a cat.

    Hail Hail.

ps, I told you about Commons, he would never play for my Celtic in Europe again.

  13. Glasstwothirdsfull – the hilarious thing about celtic’s “adoption” of moneyball is that it wasnt full adoption of the (discredited) concept. Moneyball was suppossed to be about spotting potential from data and buying players based on that. The idea was that a relatively modest spend would then allow you to become a successful team (from a sporting perspective).

Celtic of course used this (clearly unsuccesfully) to spot players with potential and then sell them to make money. Any sporting success was relatively incidental to the “strategy”.

Laughably moneyball has never proven to be ultimately succesful even when the goal was sporting success.

When Paul espoused the virtues of the approach he was of course representing celtic’s shiney new strategy. It also marked for me the start of a very inevitable decline. It also marks the arrogance and stupidity of the board and that their goals were very different to everyone else connected to the club.

Lennon left as a result (they were putting his career on the line). The other managers we invited to take the job ran a million miles as soon as the grasped the stupidity of the strategy and of course poor ronny was both cheap and willing to accept the nonsense. So he got the job.

Now Ronny has proven even worse than the horrible constraints that moneyball put on him. Its not really his fault that VVD was sold and he doesnt pick the players we buy (dont believe for a moment he does). Ronny has shown he cant learn. He isnt willing to take on the board. so he has to lie for them “we are improving” he says. Yeah right.

One final thing – Simonovic – would people please get it in their head that we were lied to about the transfer cost. Cost £5.5M – in your dreams.

Celtic are dead in the water right now and until we get regime change we are only going under.

So ronny won the Norwegian league with a wee team – mostly guys who wouldn’t get near our squad – apart from jo Hanson

We continually lose to Scandinavian and other European teams like that and say it’s their system that beats us

We bring ronny in so we can adopt the system and play to our strengths while utilising the cash we have that they don’t .

Last night I didn’t see a player in their team who I think we should sign and their captain and centre half is frekn 40

Time to scrap the project – bye bye ronny

  17. Vespacide on 23rd October 2015 2:19 pm,

See,things always seem rosy when you look back. This Lenny, the guy I loved, and beat Barca, you seem to have him as an ace tactician when playing teams like Molde.Would this be the same Lenny who lost a 2-0 lead to Utrecht,4-2 Agg.Surely not the same tactical wizard that lost to Swiss giants Sion.

    Bad games happen,to every manager.

  18. Johan

His ‘tactic’ isn’t suited to Euro football and counter attacking sides, that’s been evident since he arrived.

But when a Celtic man starts getting a kicking – what do Celtic fans do?

Sevc’s and Sevca’s are kicking in ole Sevco, and SMSM have their manna from heaven.

  21. Greenwells Glory on

Hi Ghuys, Salve salve;- Having watched the game last night and having analysed it in detail I can only say that after taking into to consideration, the pros and cons along with the ins and outs as well as the ups and downs, marshalling all the relevant data and looking at everything in the round, that there is indeed much upon which to ponder.

Hoops worn for the darts,as we should have had on last night.

    Hail Hail.

  23. WITs,

    …new Manager unveiled?

Probably around the AGM, depending on the next couple of results.

Saw someone ask last night ‘Where DD started in banking?”

Haven’t seen an answer but it was in Kabul, Afghanistan.

  24. Trying to be mature about this — slept on it before posting.

However no amount of delay will change the fact that we are in a sorry old state.

Some players are playing as if the want the manager sacked and that the easiest way to do it is through EUL embarrassment. Shocking display from a team, boardroom, manager and squad that have lost their way.

Painful to watch and impossible to accept — something has to give quickly.

Starting with CG — playing like a second rate Championship keeper who hasn’t quite grasped the basics. Needs to be dropped because this is far from the first horrible performance he has had this year.

However this would only be the start of a comprehensive clear out / benching.

The others in the ” Didn’t try a leg” mob know who they are and need to be reminded that an SPL win is not enough.

Biggest issue is where to start.

ML = On his last legs and knows it — Confidence has gone.

DB = wants to play a higher standard of football than he is currently capable off — Dangerous.

EA = File under bombscare — he can play a quality level of football but only for a club or team that is well coached and with players that play for each other.

EI = unsettled to the point he crosses the ball into the crowd behind the goal.

SB = Shot to pieces — stinking in all forms of football outside of the SPL.

NB = currently making a career of making simples things difficult — Crazy Legs Crane.

SA = we are making him a worse player.

SJ = Can he get any worse — glimpses of talent the a strop and then a shocker.

KC = was he on the park, how long did it take him to get noticed?

Championship Superstar — 10 minutes of endeavour in amongst two disappearances.

LG = no chance on a night like last night.

We now have a team made up of 11 AS huff-a-likes.

Only defence is that the pitch was terrible — intermittently unplayable — it helped keep the score down.

Mode are limited to the point of being poor but they were a class above a “Couldn’t care less” bunch of numpties in a green strip.

Something is very wrong at the club.

  25. What I thought watching the game last night. The Molde players worked harder, moved the ball quicker and forward, they looked like they wanted the win more than our players. The most scarer thing is the should have won by a greater margin.

  26. When it comes to trying to sort this out I think the manager will go.

PL isn’t going to offer up an apology regarding the money first regime he has put in place.

The Irssh Raj doesn’t want to get involved or put in the effort to sort things out.

RD hasn’t got the bottle or the personality to sort out the dressing room.

    We are a shambles.

The scary thing is that yet still they clap.

  27. Wits

So we are out of Europe and the rest of the season will be liittered with poor performances like last night.

You my man, are loving this.

    HUNNISH behaviour.

C’mon Celts, turn this around so I can tell this hun to GTF!

  28. Good performance against Ajax away.

Unlucky against Fener at home but still didn’t lose.

Pish away to Molde last night and duly pumped.

Did the world end after that match?

There’s been a few posts on here in the last day or two which put a crap football match into perspective.

    Get a life or GTF.

  29. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Molde moved the ball quicker because we gave them plenty of space for them to move it into. They were well drilled and gave us no space. We didn’t have an answer to this.

What was RD talking about post match when asked about taking Commons off? We couldnt have four forwards on the park ? Do we have four forwards in our entire squad now that Stokes has been excommunicated ? I dont know what his idea of a forward is but we certainly had nowhere near four of them on show last night
