Don’t mention the War

75

When I was a student, I worked with a man who fought in the War.  When it came to football, he never supported West Germany.  This was the era of Rummenigge and Matthaus, two of the finest players in the world, whom I watched, marvelled at and fantasised about seeing in green and white one day.

“But Germans today are different”, I would say, “Most of them were born after the War and feel the same way about it as we do.”  He was not open to discussion.  Easy for me to say, of course, experiences of war, of that war in particular, are powerful influencers.

So it is a bit disingenuous for me to harbour resentments for events on and off a football field 37 years ago.  Rapid Vienna occupy a dark room in my mind, alongside Atletico Madrid and Oldco Rangers; I know I’m not alone.

Younger Celtic fans must look at us with a shake of the head when we talk of Rapid and Atletico, the latter are celebrated across Europe for their achievements, if not for their style of play.  Those younger-still have little of no knowledge of Oldco and their pre-1989 ways.

I’m going to stop embarrassing myself with old grudges, some of them, anyway.  In the words of Elsa, Let it go.  Enjoy the game against Rapid.

    Brentford.

Much of the success enjoyed by Brentford has been down to their success in signing unknown players from French football .

Then selling them for huge profits ,E.G. Maupay.

    Then wisely reinvesting the profit.

One of the main scouts who discovered these players is a young man called Brendan McFarlane .

Brendan comes from East Wemyss in Fife .

He is a Celtic supporter ,and comes from a staunch Celtic supporting family.

He left Brentford a year or so ago .

He took up a senior scouting role with Toulouse FC .

His signings at Toulouse have just helped them get promoted to Ligue 1.

He is proving to be a very good judge of upcoming players ,who make the grade at EPL and Ligue one level.

He moved to France at a young age to scout the lower leagues.

Celtic could do worse than covet Brendan MacFarlane.

  3. Talented Aaron Hickey has revealed Bologna made him “feel wanted” as he snubbed a move to Celtic.

The 19-year-old has turned heads with his brilliant displays for Sinisa Mihajlovic’s side and is regarded as one of the finest young talents in Serie A.

Despite enjoying his breakthrough season in the Italian top flight, he has been consistently tipped with a return to the Scottish Premiership.

The former Hearts kid had the option to return to Glasgow’s east end where he was part of the academy as a youngster, before choosing Bologna in 2020.

But Hickey reckons he has made the right choice in testing himself in Europe and it’s hard to argue differently.

Speaking to FourFourTwo about his decision, he said: “I gave it a lot of thought.

“I’d been at Celtic as a young player, so I knew the club inside out and going there meant I could stay at home with my family.

“Bayern (Munich) couldn’t have treated me any better – they invited me over for a look around and their facility was incredible.

“I’d never seen anything like it.

“It would have been easy to sign for them, as everything was so impressive, but Bologna made an impression on me.

I agree that judging youth players is much more difficult.

I will enjoy the Rapid match . just so long as no one throws a plastic bottle which seriously injures a Rapid plater by landing four feet away from him . That sort of poor aiming is simply unacceptable .

  7. Why do supposed to be Celtic ex Celtic Players who never have anything positive to say about our club ,Hickey being the latest,in fact i don’t think they are truly hoops fans ,more like chasing a fast buck players.

I think the offer from Hull was seen as being a bit high / frothy.

Blaming the situation on government, while taking advantage of it, is pathetic, self serving hypocrisy.

  15. RV — there is a political angle we would do well to engage with.

Anybody holding a grudge after 37 years is just a small child in a man’s world.

Any rumours on who threw the bottle?

Hopefully he is still taking pelters for his stupidity.

Also — the RV third game — Old Board greed in action.

  16. Paul 67,

I would wager there are posters and lurkers on here who had relatives that suffered at the hands of Germany and Japan. War crimes were committed by all parties and only a very small few ever faced justice.

As a society we have moved on and these wars are firmly in the past. Football has embraced German and Japanese players. Especially Celtic supporters.

    We just can’t get enough.

It would be unthinkable to sing songs commerating bombs and guns from these past wars at our games.

    Totally unthinkable.

Hello again all you young rebels.

    Irish fans and Celtic.

It’s Friday, yesterday here in Oz lol.

Just like BRRB, thought, which pub today? don’t want to start too early

Think I’ll go down to our parks and do our lines which I’ve sadly put on

the back burner for a few days, right, decision made.

Usually see a couple of our young loons kicking a ball about, yup, there

we go, hoops top, pants, socks, full kit ?

Normally our bhoys just throw a top on and anything goes down below.

Don’t recognise him, looks a player, young Asian lad with him and in a

    Blue top 😡

“ Hello pal, Celtic fan eh ?

    “ Yes “

“ Best team in the world son “

    “ Definitely “

“ Are you here on holiday ?

“ No I’m Australian but my dads Irish “

Meanwhile the Asian kid with the pensioners top is standing with his mouth

open catching flies, and wondering why did I buy this load of sh;t to wear ?

“ I take it your dads a Celtic fan then, because we have a CSC down in

Mornington and we are meeting up next Sunday in the Dubliner to sing our

songs, here’s my name and number “

“ We’ll he’s not really a soccer fan, but he knows I love it, and he taught me

  20. Don’t mention the war — I wonder who that could be aimed at?

I’m sure the Saddam Hussein Loyal will be along to remind us.

  21. HE left the academy at 15, so whit.

you just make stuff up, for whatever twisted reasons you hate the academy set up.

you hate saint ninians, the glee club categorisations are just childish.

that we identify these players says the academy works.

you dont know why Hickey went back to Hearts academy, you havnt a clue.

make up another one, go on, let me guess ……………

are you not meeting up with the guys today ?

  22. Losing good young talent that make it elsewhere is an occupational hazard.

Obviously you try to avoid it but it happens to all Clubs,

Likewise when buying players, not all buys will be a success,

Yes you will lose Millions on some but you will make millions on others,

Because they can Timbhoy, although I would doubt Aaron Hickey said anything about Celtic,I think that link ended as Craig Levin has just said on shortie when his dad approached Hearts(he was with them as a boy)

to go back to them as he didn’t see progress ,so a deal was done the n.

I would not doubt however that there is a bit of ‘celticshoid《》hunsgood reporting that goes on here.

    It’s reflected in their sales.
