Don’t mention the War

75

When I was a student, I worked with a man who fought in the War.  When it came to football, he never supported West Germany.  This was the era of Rummenigge and Matthaus, two of the finest players in the world, whom I watched, marvelled at and fantasised about seeing in green and white one day.

“But Germans today are different”, I would say, “Most of them were born after the War and feel the same way about it as we do.”  He was not open to discussion.  Easy for me to say, of course, experiences of war, of that war in particular, are powerful influencers.

So it is a bit disingenuous for me to harbour resentments for events on and off a football field 37 years ago.  Rapid Vienna occupy a dark room in my mind, alongside Atletico Madrid and Oldco Rangers; I know I’m not alone.

Younger Celtic fans must look at us with a shake of the head when we talk of Rapid and Atletico, the latter are celebrated across Europe for their achievements, if not for their style of play.  Those younger-still have little of no knowledge of Oldco and their pre-1989 ways.

I’m going to stop embarrassing myself with old grudges, some of them, anyway.  In the words of Elsa, Let it go.  Enjoy the game against Rapid.

Swally today — sorry can’t make it / powerwashing.

    AH at St N’s — S1 to S4.

    Left aged 15 and 11/12th — “16” to me.

Four years with us in the youths and headed east — To Salt’n Sauce land not some football wonderland on the continent.

If a situation like this doesn’t ring alarm bells / a wee bit of investigation then what will?

You are blinded by all your chat / booster club nonsense about our world class youth set up which you opine on here at regular intervals.

My eyes are opened by the facts — what I see / what I know / what I read / what I am told.

St N’s isn’t working for many reasons — the poor coaching being the main one.

The social set up at St N’s is also poor — not football focused enough.

What about yourself and St N’s — any recent skin in the game.

For the record I do have two going on three from my extended family.

    AH leaving @ “16” — so whit?

I think even you would notice the small matter of the £19mill smakaroonees heading Bologna way.

If you can walk away from that then you are DD and I claim a twirl of your moustache.

  3. AH price inflation — I would want to rule out money laundering before I would sign off the deal.

B/ford play moneyball very well but I would want to double check.

If it doesn’t make sense then I would really need to ask why.

Football finances bring out the worst in people.

  4. LF — interesting.

    Stagnated badly last season.

He has something for the SPL — not sure about Italy?

However he will offer more information that we can argue about.

There will be very few items available on Amazon that can’t be purchased from other sellers with more convention employment and taxation arrangements.

You have a choice, so use it.

Certainly don’t bathe yourself in self congratulatory smugness for making an insignificant donation to charity when buying from Amazon.

Some scuttlebutt that after losing out on Sousa, we have turned our attention back to Mohammad Abu Fani. Take a peek at him. Sturdy, strong, very short in the leg, does not look fast, strong in the tackle. Not afraid to advance forward, or to shoot, and scores a few goals.

Hard to read from this clip and others that he is a traditional sitting defensive midfielder that would reinforce the CCV/Starfelt/A. N. Other partnership. I guess we will see soon enough.

So far off the pace you are getting lapped.

Watching teenagers grow up today makes me pine for the certainties of yesteryear.

No jealousy involved — just “worried sick” / old school.

But that is the lot of a man of a certain vintage with growing children.

  8. AT,

    good input.

So his dad takes him back to Hearts.

Celtic academy tried to keep him, and indeed according to Levein just there on shortie tried to buy him back SIX times, but he choose Bologna (I guess cos they promised first team football) over us and Bayern.

I predict when Doak, Dembele, Liam Hendorson make transfer fees in the future it will forgotten celtic developted them first, well other than to say our coaches are shit.

By the way, I heard Ronanldo is not coming now, cos we dont have a full size indoor pitch.

And our wonder kids are not progressing because their is no burger van at break times up saint ninians.

  9. Social engagement / conscious — pay pennies at the till vs vote for a proper functioning tax system?

    Where we are heading.

  10. AH — guaranteed first team football @ Bologna

He played in 12 games in his first season?

He was available Sept to March — maybe Italy has a long winter break.

  11. Stx2 @ 3.0

How about you ask the GB for their thoughts?

I would suggest yes — PR value / political value outweighs the £10 grand.

EL-Anyone using Amazon, knowing how they operate, is endorsing and rewarding their methods.

AT- not endorsing one bit, what I am saying to you is that the Tax architecture(ie that is set by government, the rules which allow/disallow Amazon to do this) are set by govt,so to be clear

Tax policy is defined by Government.

Amazon operate within that defined policy,so all the benefits given to Por Cierto when he buys product x y or z are done so within Tax law.

EL-Blaming the situation on government, while taking advantage of it, is pathetic, self serving hypocrisy.

AT- Ernie the opposite,no hypocrisy at all.personally I agree Amazon are a rancid lot and I don’t shop there.

I have in past purchased stuff in past that I could not get in Scotland.

Por Cierto can’t change gov Tax policy.

Governments can at a stroke could introduce a totally different Tax structure especially changing the feral tax policy, can’t touch the welfare state for the corporate sector tho as shown as tony/gordon/weealisdair during their tenure,

All the present incumbents did is follow on as Gordi did from his predecessor.

Maybe hypocrisy comes from govts allowing global transnational corps like they do.

They could certainly do a lot of good by rejecting the money, and explaining why.

Not a cat’s chance in hell of it happening though.

The institution that is Celtic eschews controversy. You might have noticed.

  15. I have hated Rapid Vienna from that night at celtic park.

    I hate hearing their name

    I hate seeing their name

I hated the fact we’ve actually bought players from them.

    Cheats of the highest order.

I will never forget the Final v Everton with the Everton fans with a flag saying celtic should be here.

To go from the high of overturning the 1st leg it was one of the most memorable games I remember from a youngster… to a masssive low of sitting in the house listening to the replay from old Trafford on the radio… was one of my biggest disappointments supporting Celtic.

I to this day believed that we would’ve won’t the Cup Winners cup that season .. I truly do

I think all our Japanese players have that underlying toughness,

Hatate got clattered by the big centre half oy in the friendly the other night, he got the fella back with a swipe some minutes later. in turn the big fella clattered him again, and Reo just smirked it off.

Maeda I enjoyed him battering intop severla players end of last season

season kicks off today ……… will i go to scapaflow or stay in the garden, decisions decisions

    ………………

I think your right about our Japanese Bhoys being able to mix it. I remember Hatate’s tackle in the Cup game at Tannadice. The media were still calling for a ban three weeks later. 😂

  21. Ernie.

    You could say not buy/boycott?

Both putting the onus on one side of the transaction to the individual, making it the individuals choice.

    No.

Do what is best, restructure our corporate tax so that it is fairer.

This has not been done at all tory/lab/libtory/tory govts.

It is now more or less at the point these transnationalcorp set their own policy, feral subsidiary accounting meaning little Tax is paid. That can only be changed by gov, alas I don’t see keev altering it sadly

leaving less money for the society they operate in .

Be clear I want a redistributive Tax system, fully resourced and staffed, taking wealth from our crudely rich Corp sector and giving it to the poorest, weakest and those in need.it won’t happen as long as current system remains.

I have some comments to add about argentinians and how they feel about celtic, will come back with stroy later.

  24. Ewan Henderson having a good game for Hibees, another one that got away, bloody academy coaches.

  25. Teams up and the boss isn’t mucking about…Hart, Urhoghide, Welsh, CCV, Bernabei, McGregor, O’riley, Hatate, Jota, Maeda, Giakoumakis.

  26. In: Alexandro Bernabei, defender (Atletico Lanus, undisclosed); Jota, midfielder (Benfica, loan to permanent, undisclosed); Cameron Carter-Vickers, defender (Tottenham Hotspur, loan to permanent, undisclosed); Daizen Maeda, forward (Yokohama F Marinos, loan to permanent, undisclosed); Benjamin Siegrist, goalkeeper (Dundee United).

Out: Nir Bitton, midfielder (Maccabi Tel Aviv); Kerr McInroy, midfielder (Kilmarnock); Ewan Henderson, midfielder (Hibernian, loan to permanent); Luca Connell, midfielder (Barnsley); Ross Doohan, goalkeeper (Tranmere Rovers, loan to permanent, undisclosed); Tom Rogic, midfielder; Ryan Mullen, goalkeeper.

Loan out: Vasilis Barkas, goalkeeper (Utrecht); Liam Scales, defender (Aberdeen); Adam Montgomery, defender (St Johnstone); Conor Hazard, goalkeeper (HJK Helsinki).

  27. The celtic academy is not bad at all and we tend to produce a decent amount of prospects. However, much of that potential falls short just as it does in most cases.

Playing opportunity is vital and the b team is useful for 16,17 and player in their early 18 to be exposed to the man’s game. However, we need a higher level for those kids that thrive in that environment. I would like an informal link up with a league 1, championship club in scotland to allow progression. Would be hard to get a club to be willing to engage in such an arrangement and celtic may feel they don’t have enough control over the players developments
