Downtime hopes

186

With a squad already looking short on cover, Brendan Rodgers will be keen to see players return from international duty over the next couple of days.  Liam Scales, Daizen Maeda, Sebastian Tounekti and Benjamin Nygren all played parts of games for their countries, none of the outfielders played an entire game, which is a blessing.  Sebastian’s trip from Equatorial Guinea on Monday to Kilmarnock on Sunday is likely to be one of the greater contrasts he faces in his career.  The climate in Kilmarnock has never been equatorial.

Those players aside, the rest of the squad should show the benefit of two weeks endurance and technical training.  Kieran Tierney has been used sparingly in games thus far.  Hopefully this is a temporary measure and we will see him last an entire game going forward.

I also hope Michel-Ange Balikwisha has had time to settle into the club.  He was technically sound at Ibrox on his debut but inevitably short of synchronicity with his team-mates.

Kelechi Iheanacho has been out of the picture at Sevilla since preseason so will be behind the rest of the squad in terms of fitness.  He will need games to resolve that. I doubt he will start at either Kilmarnock or Thistle the following week, but the competition steps up after these games, so the manager will be keen to get him on the grass/plastic for a period.

  1. Some supporters won’t be happy unless we’re in debt ploughing millions into nothingness. I honestly don’t get it.

No-one knows what’s going to happen tomorrow never mind round the corner.

I feel more certain about Celtic’s future with a healthy bank balance. Rainy days are never far away from realities of life in the SPL. Domestic dominance is key.

What’s to say injuries don’t happen to key players at anytime or Champions League qualification?

The financial ability to respond at any given transfer window is an insurance policy against the worst thing imaginable: Der Hun, Sevco a la Rangers, in a position to take advantage.

  2. I’m a bit pissed off with Woolworths. I’ve been enjoying shopping there for the last thirty five years, I don’t have any shares but I know people who do. I used to like their wine selection, get some good tasty bargains and don’t even mind the home brand. The thing is they have dropped the discounted premium wines section this year, despite those basturds making billions, and they have the cheek to leave that out of their specials brochure, they should be guillotined. I’ve decided that I am going to walk slowly into the shop this Friday, with my paknsave bag, and only buy the cheapo merlot. I might even stand outside for a bit first. That will teach them. I might have a headache on Saturday. Roll on Killie.

  10. Spikeys the Timternet was screaming to overspend on Idah, thought Engels must be good because we spent £11 million. After that everyone seen us coming and double the price. Let’s see how this years signings go first, maybe even support them. Yesterday’s Henrick, Kyogo, khun, Jota, MoR, Maeda all came in on the basement. Why have we all become so sanctimonious. Give the new bhoys a chance to shine. Mon the hoops.

  12. An acquaintance has just told me a story about her five-year-old granddaughter, who’s “Celtic daft”. Last Christmas she was admitted to the children’s hospital with flu and had to be isolated in her own room. She was devastated to learn the Celtic players were visiting the ward but wouldn’t be allowed in to her room to see her. Then her sadness turned to joy: the players appeared at her window, waving, and Callum McGregor left a ridiculous amount of toys at her door. She was especially thrilled to see her favourite, Kyogo, who—when he heard he was her favourite ,stayed around a little longer.

With everything going on around Celtic just now, and with the blog being so toxic , maybe by the end of the season our own angst will have turned to joy—just like that wee girl’s did. or maybe not!

  15. I’ve got a real concern that fans arriving late for the Kilmarnock game will give the police an opportunity to cause mayhem. They will then put the blame on the pesky fans. If the fans want to protest, then I think they should do it from the terraces and focus it on the board.

Agreed, some folk screamed for Idah to be signed BUT nobody asked for the club to go into debt.

  17. The survey indicates the folks that responded are right behind action. The thing it does not take into consideration is the emotional attachment we have to our Club.

If you are p’d off with your bank or supermarket, there are plenty others out there. There is only one Celtic so when push comes to shove will folks have the necessary to carry through. Its a lot to ask. And another thing, how long will be necessary to carry out these actions to get the change required – a week, a month, a year……..a real dilemma.

Likely a bit of both imo.

The club would likely make more money on general sale as given the numbers on the waiting list and rarity of European nights you’d think demand would be high. Of course team performance between now and then might impact the demand either way.

Hopefully our new signings will integrate well, the manager will concentrate on rallying the players, talking them up and letting them loose a bit and the board will cease with statements that agitate things further and we can all enjoy the football for a bit.

  22. In the interest of Truth ;The idea that Celtic lied in their reference to FSR is not true. The idea that they did is just a reflection of the understanding of how FSR works.

What was missing was context, so here is an explanation that brings in the annual licensing Cycle.

The following should demonstrate that if high earnings allow higher wage spend in year 1 that might cause a problem in year 2 if earning’s fall in year two (as they will in next years accounts unless we sell a player or players to be added to the earnings in next years accounts but last years spend on players might be the same in year 2.

This is how it works against the UEFA licensing cycle.

FSR : The 70% Cap Explained

What is FSR?UEFA’s Financial Sustainability Regulations (FSR) limit clubs to spending no more than 70% of their football income on wages and player costs. This is checked every season as part of the licence application.

    Illustrative 3-Year Example

    Year 1

    Income: £100m

    Wages: £70m

    Cap (70%): £70m

    Compliant (right on the limit)

    Year 2

    Income: £80m

    Wages: £70m

    Cap (70%): £56m

    Breach (spending above limit)

    Year 3

    Income: £90m

    Wages: £70m

    Cap (70%): £63m

    Breach (spending above limit)

Key Takeaway Even if wage costs stay the same, a fall in income can push a club over the limit and into breach. The rules are income-driven, not just spending-driven.

That’s why sustainable budgeting matters: yesterday’s “safe” wage bill can quickly become tomorrow’s compliance problem if revenues dip.
