Dropping Gordon was ballsy, now manager has other decisions to make

730

After the defeat at Ibrox on 29 December, we anticipated changes, but the most significant decision Brendan Rodgers made was the most unexpected.  Celtic’s man of the match that day was goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, without whom the score would have been significantly worse than the 1-0 defeat.  Remarkably, he was dropped and has not played since.

The reason for this has nothing to do with Craig’s ability between the sticks, it gets to the reason we lost control of the game: how quickly and accurately we move the ball.  Despite a man of the match performance, Craig was dropped because Brendan realised our game plan can be easily dismantled if we are pedestrian in possession.

While Scott Bain is better with the ball at his feet than Craig, and Craig’s liability in this area is limited, central midfield was significantly more culpable for what went wrong at Ibrox.

Since then Callum McGregor has been restored to his normal midfield berth, Scott Brown has retained his place and Olivier Ntcham has been absent through injury, so the manager has had no major selection choices to make in this area.  Olivier is now fit and in with a chance of making his first appearance of the year in Sunday’s Scottish Cup tie, while just as we were at Ibrox, we are short at left back, where McGregor moved to fill in.

Brendan has some big decisions to make this week.  A central mid of Brown and Ntcham is not right for the football we play.  In taking the least expected decision, to drop Gordon for Bain, I hope we saw a sign that Brendan values the velocity with which we circulate the ball.

  1. Morelos 3 game ban is Nothing to the CHEATS.

The Cheats want to hold on to the Old Firm tag.

All they want is 2nd place.

    Sickening for me.

  2. Of course the cheatin’ wull return………………..

They’ve had the benefit of 3 points secured against thur nearest challenger……….

    second place in the bag?

    Just the rules applied properly.

    That’s all we want.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers calls for referees from outside Scotland to help game

The Hoops gaffer reckons bringing in whistlers from beyond Scotland would restore law and order in the SPFL…

  4. Norrie- correct, any referees been demoted…? No,they are carrying out their masters work, e.g Steven MacLean at Hampden semi, handball, Brother Muir had a better view,i think him and Craig Thomshun are the only full time referees, so the coaching passed on is obvious. HH

    Thanks all for replies.

David17 – cheers. Forgot about Swanson. Safe sending off at 5-0.

Hot Smoked – yes. I believe it happens to us more often that to others.

Retrospective action, IMHO, only does half the job.

A player red carded typically receives a ban but his team are punished on the day too.

Does anyone here think we wouldn’t have beaten 10 man Livingstone if Menga had been sent off?

Modern day squad sizes mean teams can handle a player’s absence for a couple of games.

Personally I’d radicalise the process, enforce the sending off in the next meeting of the two teams and make the offending team play with ten men for X minutes.

    Finally, apologies for delayed response.

I think you are right the SFA were up for letting Rangers away with what they could However, matters are now much more developed and after Morelos 3rd Red cardthen he has used up his get out of jail free card. The videos and the stills are quite clear and they could no longer let this cretin away with it. Red card stands.

The Mcgregor incident is another case following the Ajer incident and the stills are again clear.

I still don’t see why Simunovic got away with it

  7. Almore..as a high school kid (no drugs involved) I was at Murrayfield a few times…it was brilliant…no cover from the elements, crappy terracing but I saw the great Gavin Hastings ply his trade…memorably saw us thrash england in 1986 I think…only unsure about the year

“Wed night, a penalty when clear offside should have been applied”

if we are going to slate the refs we need to stick to the facts, clear offside ?? Took about 5 replays to realise it was offside (minimal not clear but still off) …. nobody asked why McKenna’s hand was in the air for a good few minutes… VAR would have picked up the offside but would only depend on it being referred to VAR …. slowly but surely the Huns in whatever form “might” have to realise technology will in time threaten their perceived mentality of being above the rules

    mon the VAR :-)

  10. Allegedly ?? ( from a rag) some of what Brendan’s had to say

Brendan Rodgers has urged the SFA to bring in officials from outside Scotland to help restore law and order in the SPFL.

The Celtic boss has recently called for VAR and full-time referees but he believes it would help under-fire whistlers if the authorities brought in whistlers from beyond our borders.

Rodgers has been left scratching his head after numerous contentious decisions this season and has repeatedly voiced concerns over player safety.

He admitted viewers from outside of Scotland will have been wincing at some of the challenges being allowed to go unpunished either on the field or retrospectively – making the game look lawless north of the border.

You really want me to answer that, really?

Hugh Birt went to Celtic fc because he saw Celtic Boys Club and Celtic FC as one and the same. He went to the top of the tree as he saw it.

You however want to sweep sweep it away. It won’t go away, it’ll only grow legs, much better if we disclose all we know now.

  16. Almore at 9:36pm,

my old man always loved the rugby (a throwback to his schooldays….don’t go there, a loooong story for another day, although the odd long time poster will know) and instilled in me a love of what was then the 5 Nations, but now the 6 nations.

I will watch the game tomorrow and will shout on Scotland, although it its a very hard thing to not support the Green-and-White. Should be a great game esp as Ireland will be sorely hurting after last week, but Scotland got a very good recent record at Murrayfield (unbeaten at home last 3 years I think?).

I actually had offer of a ticket from my youngest brother who has a Murrayfield season ticket for the internationals, but due to my good lady already having a prior commitment booked, I had to decline.

Looking forward to it…..and then on to Celtic Park on Sunday for the real deal ;-)

  17. Brendan getting involved to address the cheating.

Does this mean that he wants the PLC to get rid of him, before he gets the Mississippi treatment from the Klan ?

Or, maybe he’s already getting the treatment ?

  18. NorrieM 10.54pm

    Now that’s cheating :-)

I was only commenting about the McKenna incident because for the life of me I could not understand why his hand was even up when he was jumping to head the ball … again when I then realised the Sev was actually offside (which was marginal)

Like many others am unsure why Brendan has not made more comment on the many things he could have, but who knows, certainly none of us :-)

I clearly stated I want all such scum to get punished. I stated I would have gone to the police if I thought children were at risk. I clearly stated that it seemed strange that hugh would go to celtic fc and celtic boys club and not the police, would you not agreed?

Sweeping things under the carpet is not acceptable and it will not go away, agreed, but why would celtic fc put their hands up?

If someone acussed you of something would you meakly accept it even if it were not true?

Would a few allegations and a media smear campaign alter your position?

See the think is it seems to me you have already decided celtic’s guilt based on what you have heard and from gossip without no foundation.

If any celtic employee has anything to answer to and if anyone at celtic is found to have dont wrong then they should be punished. Thing is I dont have any evidence to support that position and neither do you, otherwise you or I would be witnesses in the stand and not on this blog.

We should let the law determine where guilt. the criminal courts have has already convicted several boy club coaches who worked in various club throughtout the uk, including celtic boys club.
