Duffy and need for central defender more than winger

476

A proposed swap deal with Blackburn with Shane Duffy coming to Glasgow and James Forrest heading south makes sense for Celtic. Late last season we were talking about how Erik Sviatchenko was our only solid central defender, with Jozo Simunovic injured and yet to establish himself.

Duffy made his Euro 16 debut in the 1-0 win over Italy, before being red carded for a professional foul against France. I’m not expecting a van Dijk, but his performances in both games was of the standard Celtic only have with Erik.

James Forrest grabbed the space vacated by Aiden McGeady’s move to CSKA Moscow and made the most of the opportunity but injury has inhibited him in recent years. He’s also suffered from being part of what looked like a World Record attempt of squeezing wingers into a 23-man squad. We need fewer wingers and at least one more central defender.

Brendan Rodgers comments that Kris Commons is nowhere near ready for the first team is not encouraging. I’d have him limp to the bench for the forthcoming qualifiers. Even unfit, he’s capable of linking play like no one else in the squad.

  1. it might be far from where we want to be but paul is absolutely correct, he’s been our most effective creative forward for many years and he’s capable of doing things no one else in the squad can, especially in Europe

Unfortunately he’s overweight, unfit and has a suspect attitude which all count against him when a manager is trying to instill different values in all the squad. It’s difficult to build something when you are rewarding commons with a place on the bench ahead of other players when his training and attitude don’t warrant it.

I’m with paul though, do what you have to to get through and then look at things again. I hope Brendan’s who doesn’t get in the way of things like ronnys did when we had the chaotic qualification campaign in his first season.

And hibs? I can’t see he’d want to step down a league, he’d be the best player to have played football there in years, it’s below him and I’d be amazed if he wanted to finish his career there

Fitting a player with KC’s attributes into the last two manager’s thoughts brings to mind the two philosophies in basketball represented by Larry Bird’s Celtics and Magic Johnson’s Lakers; half-court possession attack versus all-court running attack.

It’s clear to me already that Brendan and Ronny want their team to play the latter way. That isn’t Kris’s forte anymore than Larry Bird would have fitted in at the Lakers.

Thanks for your time with us KC, go and win the Championship with Hibs.

I’ve not seen enough of Shane Duffy to have an opinion. James Forrest should be moved on.

Kris Commons? Why not start him on Wednesday, sub him after 5 minutes and see if he reacts the way to Brendan as he did to Ronny.

    Unforgivable.

I wouldn’t be bothered if I never seen him in a Celtic top again.

  4. Gary67, that is true but I never thought of Lucas Leiva as a regista. Allen at the Euros was a work horse and was more physical than I remembered but him coming to CP is a fanciful notion. We miss a Lennon or Allens pal, the best beard in the valleys, Joe Ledley type.

  5. Ghuys the words that are always present when discussing Kris Commons are “were” “been” “was” all past tense and very good he WAS we are hopefully moving forward. Maybe in the future he will have something to offer, for now I would suggest his mission is over – just my opinion. H H Hebcelt

On Shane Duffy, I think it’s pathetic to be seen chasing a player we’ve all, including our scouting platoon, seen twice on television.

Those of us who watched Celtic against the Imps and Wolfsburg have seen just as much of Ajer. He’ll do for Wednesday and won’t be a liability in Lithuania/Kazakhstan.

  7. Hot smoked – I think it’s a reaction to (a) the result last week and (b) people buying in to the sevco challenge myth.

We have been a very edgy and nervy support from the 90’s – that era inflicted serious psychological damage on our collective thinking. I mind a bluenosed colleague remarking to me how quickly the celtic support had gone quiet during a game in MON era when we had been leading 2-0 and they pulled one back (can’t remember the game but it was something like that) – I even remember us getting edgy when they got one back in the 6-2 game to make it 3-1 and then again to make it 5-2. Since then I’ve always thought we were damaged by the memory of the 90’s when we were regularly beaten by them and often in painful circumstances.

So we get supporters who react to every set back by thinking it’s the end of the good times!

To a man and woman we are all agreed that we need 4-6 improvements in terms of signings – spine of the team stuff – that’s significant. But you’re right – we need them to be right, not to be brought in quickly.

A step back to look at the facts might help – we won the league last season by a significant margin, with the squad we largely still have. some I would never allow to wear the hoops again, but most of them are capable of bringing something to the party.

In the meantime, before we get our signings in I think Brendan needs to think carefully about how we play in europe. And in any case, all good defences have good protection in front of them. Keeping Bitton and Ambrose out of the team will help in that respect.

I still think Brown can play a role in front of the back 4 but he and Nir are a disaster together.

I’m more optimistic than most. Time will tell but I cannot see us not strengthening the squad – it will be all in the timing. There’s an element of short termism in the game generally (or at least in the reporting of it) – in another few weeks celtic will be a different proposition and some of the SMSM who live and breath to build up whoever the sevvies sign and to damage us at every turn are going to look mighty daft. No change there then.

That’s my early afternoon ramble taken care of. Keep calm and carry on Timdom

I don’t think snyone is going mental about signing players by now, but it would have been nice to have them in place for the harder European qualifiers.

If we are put out without signing the players we all know we require, this place will be in meltdown, unless our standards and expectations have suddenly dipped because we like BR.

I honestly don’t think we have a single midfielder good enough for the champions league play off round except a fit Broony. Delighted to be proved wrong. Even the next round will be difficult with our current squad

Here. I’m going to say it. Calum McGregor is more than capable to replace Kris Commons.

    ___________

    Not sure I agree.

However, he is the only other player who’s willing to shoot early. Exactly why so many of McGregor goals have went in with deflections. Don’t give the defender the chance to alter his position.

  10. Those offensive ads which have been bothering some people on here should now be gone for good.

Roccobhoy is a fully paid up member of the Kris Commons appreciation society.

Natural talent, vision, touch, technique, pure quality. If he had pace, he’d have been with a top 6 team English Premmship team last few years. Did he not get nearly 30 goals for us a couple of seasons back, not bad for a player who is more creative than a natural goalscorer.

I love KC, always have always will. If he gets himself fully fit he should walk in2 our starting 11. He is the natural footballer in Scotland by the length of sauchiehall street.

The problem nowadays is coaches look for athletes before footballers. It has been ruining English football for many years. KC is a footballer, a proper, technically gifted footballer. Fitness can be worked on, natural talent – u either have or u dont. KC absolutely has it!

  14. Kris Commons has guile.

But if he’s not fully fit I’d still play young Allan in the no.10 role in a heartbeat – he’s the only one I can see with the same level of craft in his boots as Commons has displayed.

As for the handwringers getting their pantaloons in a pickle over Common’s Molde rant – if the rest of the impostors in the hoops had half the fire in their belies we might not have been rolled over by the feckng Huns in the Hampden semi-final.

Realistically the most likely means of improving the quality our squad is to pay off the dead wood… BR has already indicated his preference for a smaller squad.

Any further additions are unlikely as BR doesn’t want 30 player squad

    From The Sun

Juventus fined €2million for releasing shirts that IGNORE their corrupt history

It is being reported that Juventus have been fined €2million for allowing the release of unauthorised official merchandise.

Supposedly, the club permitted the sales of shirts featuring three gold stars above the badge. In Italy, teams are allowed a gold star for every ten Serie A titles won and a silver star for every ten Coppa Italia victories.

When Juventus won the league back in 2012 they requested shirts with three stars to be produced by Nike to commemorate their 30th Serie A triumph. Nike denied this request as Juventus were technically stripped of two Serie A titles after the Calciopoli corruption scandal. You’ll remember The Old Lady were also relegated to Serie B as part of their punishment.

Despite Nike’s rejection, Juventus commissioned the production of three-starred shirts anyway, which could be purchased by fans but not worn by players for games.

This led to Nike’s mutual termination as Juventus’ kit provider in 2013. Now the club have been forced to pay Nike €2million in damages, although the sportswear giants initially demanded €80m. Juventus themselves claim the fine is ‘considerably less’ than €2million. These days Juventus’ Adidas kit does feature three stars above the badge as they have now legitimately won 32 titles.

  19. I like the cut of Rodgers Gibraltar, and so did the match going support and resultant ticket sales

( Are we nearly there yet?)

Yours truly posted on his appointment he would swim in a sea of mediocrity but I never seen him ver near drowned in the tip of Spain. Although Lincoln Red Imps are better than have been painted by MSM, and at worst no different to many lower league Scottish but playing in a public park with no wings, and contrary to popular misbelief filled with professionals not all postmen. If Imps weren’t ‘English’ would the outcry have been the same?

The ball bounced badly in the first game but in the rerun it’ll bounce true and straight.

A return to normality was the Wolfsburg game, where McGregor or Christie excelled in another tale of the two Celtics and victory. A new manager can’t change the personnel overnight and we’ll still be blaming Ronny Deila XX windows in, whist certain players continue to disappoint Rodgers.

The list is endless, so we shouldn’t go there, but a wakening example might be Ambrose or O’ Connell?

Your shout Brendan but you’re a lucky well paid bhoy, and we’ll make do with your player sound bites for now. A fully fit Kris Commons has to be a contender, I don’t share the internet anti angst, and I know he is set on another bash for Celtic, because he was about the only sub cheered on all round where I sit in Parkers.

The Mulgrew stand off seems odd especially when we are so short at CB, but there is definitely a tension which I’m sure led to BR’s quip in the Gib about his absence. Unsigned players still go on pre season tours and certainly don’t clear our their Lennoxtown locker.

Charlie sees streets of gold in Sheffield but there’s nothing but cobbles and trams, besides he should beware the baby sitting fees away from Lenzie, and imagine he’ll come tumbling home wagging his tail behind him.

I hope the SMSM linked players continue to be just the bollocks they are, and like in the only signing we did make they knew nothing.

  22. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Ronny Deila didn’t want KC in his team, which IMHO as Manager, was his prerogative. He didn’t suit Deila’s style.

Celtic fan pressure, ably abetted by the SMSM, dictated that we offer KC a two year deal against Deila’s wishes.

That was the beginning of the end for RD.

And now we are stuck with Commons, who has no motivation to bother getting properly fit to play for us. He has his dosh and Deila’s gone.

  23. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Commons was a great player for us, but maybe was the single biggest factor in Deila’s failure.

Plenty of players have remonstrated with the manager when being subbed, and if it was somebody like Lubo or Naka I’m sure I would have rationalised it to suit my own Celtic supporting needs.

No. My problem with Kris is the number of times he has hauled his overweight bulk around the park. If a player being paid good money to do his utmost for the team can’t make the effort to be fully fit then he cheats the people who pay his wages and has no business near Celtic Park.

We’ve sold 9000 extra season tickets – that’s still business done for PL. I suspect the net effect of this increase coupled with a few more sales will keep the club in balance and ensure his bonus- that is unless his son has a player for us.
