Duffy and need for central defender more than winger

476

A proposed swap deal with Blackburn with Shane Duffy coming to Glasgow and James Forrest heading south makes sense for Celtic. Late last season we were talking about how Erik Sviatchenko was our only solid central defender, with Jozo Simunovic injured and yet to establish himself.

Duffy made his Euro 16 debut in the 1-0 win over Italy, before being red carded for a professional foul against France. I’m not expecting a van Dijk, but his performances in both games was of the standard Celtic only have with Erik.

James Forrest grabbed the space vacated by Aiden McGeady’s move to CSKA Moscow and made the most of the opportunity but injury has inhibited him in recent years. He’s also suffered from being part of what looked like a World Record attempt of squeezing wingers into a 23-man squad. We need fewer wingers and at least one more central defender.

Brendan Rodgers comments that Kris Commons is nowhere near ready for the first team is not encouraging. I’d have him limp to the bench for the forthcoming qualifiers. Even unfit, he’s capable of linking play like no one else in the squad.

  1. Captain Beefheart on

Didn’t see much that impressed about Duffy.

GMS has to go as do much of the sub standard squad. Cifci etc won’t do.

  2. I should point out that I saw Kris Commons up close around March this year ,and he looked in the same physical shape as he did in Dubai.

    TT

  3. Tinytim so ok two years ago Kris was,nt overweight what does that prove in July 2016? btw no idea if he is or is’nt overweight fit/unfit. H H Hebcelt

I have to disagree on part of your point. And it’s not the part re Kris Commons, although I didn’t agree with that point either.

    The point about wingers?

You mention we need less wingers.

    As it stands ,

    P.Roberts not owned by Celtic

James Forrest. not wanted by Celtic

And GMS (My 8 year old niece would of competed better…. genuinely)

These are the only natural wingers on our books.

Rogic, Christie, Allan, Armstrong etc are not wingers.

  6. Ageing fitba players getting their fitness and fatness rated vis-a-vis ageing internet bampots is nirvana for aforementioned ageing fitba players!!

    ;-)))

It’s a ‘thank you and farewell Kris’ for me btw.

  7. I would also urge Brendan to widen the net slightly.

We seem to be pursuing English based players only. Over priced, overrated in a lot of cases.

We were rumoured to be looking at the young Dutch centre half Jessie something…. Why not pursue that avenue with vigour.

Here in the USA there have been a lot of conspiracy theories of impending martial law for last two years.

There is a strange mood across the country and it’s forcing introspection.

Divisive characters like Trump have been shouting the loudest.

His rhetoric appeals to many who feel disenfranchised by the impact technology and corporate/ government collusion has had on the labour market.

Even a year ago no one took him seriously.

    They are not laughing now.

    The future is not bright.

I also think that the Turkish coup seems odd.

Erdogans subsequent behavior is not surprising.

Who is saying that Commons is overweight ?

    ————————————

    The scales?

  11. Just watched the wolfburg game! whats all the fuss around Ajer? He deserves a place in he development squad and potential for the future. He is never a center half of celtic quality at this moment in time. This position is way too important for a beginner! i just didn’t see anything exciting from him.

First half was a good team display – Armstrong looked good, Macgregor looked sharp but strikers not yet linking well.

We have a reckless size of a squad – expect a rough few months until we trim and solidify.

  12. Fan

France have already introduced a state of emergency, the first step.

As you say Trump was a figure of ridicule a while back, but he has connected with a huge proportion of the people.

The problem the status quo have is he is not [ yet ] beholden to the banksters and the multi nationals, he is so far his own man and they are finding it hard to buy him, hence I honestly can’t see him getting elected.

Only a few short years ago the likes of HRC wouldn’t have had an earthly of getting elected, but the banksters et all need their puppet in the Whitehouse.

I,m convinced it will come to Marshal Law, for Trump to be elected will set them back years.

Time will tell and as I said I hope I am wrong.

As for Turkey, they have set themselfs back a fair few years on getting into the EU, but maybes they know it’s fecked anyways.

You Bhoys are missing the point about Commons he is not overweight he is like me big boned. H.H.

  14. Looking at our Bhoys shape and style of play ,

Our back four is slow , with the exception of KT , centre halves don’t seem to work in tandem , Erik however does stick to his man. Given that BR watched all the games on video , he will have observed a decline in ML , his lack of robustness in the tackle will have been a worry and the ease with which forwards can just drift past Sadie on the inside , is more worrying.

A right back must be on the list.

A speedy centre half is required to move the back line up the pitch a good 15 yards

Our midfield is frustrating ….. Under Ronny we provided very little cover for the centre halfs, particularly after the hour mark , and in some games we either leave a big gap with the back four or , in the cup semi , we inexplicably fall back onto the defence ….. disorganised in tight games against better opposition …..

The ball is simply not moved quickly enough with almost everyone requiring a 3 or 4 touch …. Biggest culprit by a country mile is Nir who slows the game down for us and does not press his opposition …. Any offer for Nir should be accepted ………

A solid citizen in the midfield required who can keep the ball moving , a tight 3 in the midfield Bronny, Johansen, and another …..

On the leave list for their good and our good , Efe , Chas , KC , JF, and SA ( not quick enough) , I’m sure in 18 months Brendan will have us playing a much more attractive brand of football

  15. Gerryfaethebrig on

Shug Keevins doesn’t agree with the new league cup format as (New Rangers) are not up to speed… Nothing about Aberdeen, Hearts & Hibs having to play Euro ties…. He is a joke of a journo…. Shock jock who can no longer shock …. And before anybody says “don’t listen” the dishes don’t do themselves

  16. JFH

Maybe these new fangled fitba kits only look good on skinny model types?

Cant wait till the day when one of our players in warm ups is overhead asking a team mate if his bum looks fat in it.

Regarding your puzzlement about the same name etc being used for the liquidated club, and outrage I hope, no need to thank me for the information about the Insolvency Act 1986, Prohibited Names section.

You’re very welcome, I know you’re busy replying to posts which provided no new information on this.

You ‘re obviously very concerned about this, given that it turns Scoddish football into a farce.

Who’s gonna pay to watch that, eh?

One view is that the attempted coup was so inept because it was only ever a false flag operation to allow a pretext for a clampdown on dissidents.

The alternative view, as it were, is that the dissidents sensed there was a clampdown coming so panicked and staged their attempted coup before they were ready. I think that’s more plausible.

Indeed, we did however need to move away from a very slow bunch of big lads playing for corners and free kicks in Europe , hopefully now we have an experienced guy in charge who can make that happen and strike the balance about being hard enough to stand to the hacking that is thinly disguised as professional football in Scotland …..
