Duffy and need for central defender more than winger

476

A proposed swap deal with Blackburn with Shane Duffy coming to Glasgow and James Forrest heading south makes sense for Celtic. Late last season we were talking about how Erik Sviatchenko was our only solid central defender, with Jozo Simunovic injured and yet to establish himself.

Duffy made his Euro 16 debut in the 1-0 win over Italy, before being red carded for a professional foul against France. I’m not expecting a van Dijk, but his performances in both games was of the standard Celtic only have with Erik.

James Forrest grabbed the space vacated by Aiden McGeady’s move to CSKA Moscow and made the most of the opportunity but injury has inhibited him in recent years. He’s also suffered from being part of what looked like a World Record attempt of squeezing wingers into a 23-man squad. We need fewer wingers and at least one more central defender.

Brendan Rodgers comments that Kris Commons is nowhere near ready for the first team is not encouraging. I’d have him limp to the bench for the forthcoming qualifiers. Even unfit, he’s capable of linking play like no one else in the squad.

Put Ryan Christie in where many want Calum Mcgregor, and you will see a far better player

    Hail Hail

  2. Nuclear deterrent. Aye or naw?

Naw for me. Just an expensive seat at the big boys table and to what end? Surely a membership of NATO covers whatever it is the deterrent is supposed to do?

Turkey has the second biggest military in NATO. Are they reliable allies ?

  4. There can be no way BR has just sat on his hands since he arrived.

In reality he as probably been asking players, decent players who would make significant improvement to our squad, only to find there are wage issues or the fact that they simply do not want to come and play in our league.

Despite our many midfielders I still pine for Paul McStay.

    It’s so frustrating.

Cowiebhoy….. I like Christie & Allan but am afraid Callum will commit more defenders and score more goals than both of them together (just on what I have saw)

  7. CultsBhoy - likes Brendan Rodgers level of ambition- well done DD on

All talk of signing targets is premature… By my estimation we need 3 out to get 1 in…

So getting 12 out will create potential for 4 new guys. My guess is we need exits before new guys get the shout

  13. If the rumors are true about bids being lodged for some of our players then they should be sold to allow Brendan the maneuverability to alter shad to his needs.

For me these guys should go.

    Mulgrew – not needed.

JF-time is up sell while he is still under contract.

Rogic-we have paid through long period of injury if he won’t renew we should cash in.

    Bitton-just sell.

SJ-again if won’t extend contract sell and use money where needed.

There are others out injured who we should probably lose but those above should be immediate.

  16. Comparing the strengths of Christie versus McGregor….I’m not sure there is an awful lot of value in that. They are from where I can see 6.5 out of 10 players. With the potential to be 7.5 out of 10 players.

And if we had sufficient 7.5 out of 10 players in our team, we would be doing no too bad.

  17. Christie is marginally more gifted.

McGregor is undoubtably more productive, has the edge over Christie in terms of goals / end product.

I totally understand your thinking, in fact I agree to a point.

However my thinking is that the USA will again embrace isolationism. Europe will have to defend itself with the principle of mutually assured destruction which the deterrent has upheld for half a century . I wish to God we could uninvent these obscene weapons, but we cannot.

    HH to you.

  20. I don’t think Kris Commons is overweight but has a natural chunky bulid maybe similar to those who remember Johnny Giles. Kris is an excellent player on his day but father time has caught up with him and seems to be a frequent visitor to the treatment room of late.

Watched the game against the Gibraltar Imps for the first time on youtube at the weekend and sure we had alot of possession but we were steeped that they missed the chance of adding a second goal after half time. I think we will need to score at least three on Wednesday night to be safe.

When I was younger probably due to all the stories I’d heard from my peers, I’d never fail to check under my bed last thing at night just in case there was any mad man huns on the loose.

I digress. Is that fear factor you have worth the 350 billion plus? Think about it. What good does it really do and wouldnt we be better insuring through NATO?

Your fear of USA sailing off into the sunset abandoning NATO? I’ll check for that hun under the bed one last time tonight ;-)

  23. Shane Duffy has only come in to the ROI side in recently maybe a half dozedn games or so but has made a huge impression. This lad is only twenty four years of age and at 6ft 4 is a tremendous header fo the ball and certaintly takes no prisoners. would be a great signing if we could get him to leave England.

  27. Tiny Tim

“The problem is that we pay them more than they are worth ,and they will stay put because the standard that they can perform at pays less then we pay them. ”

Do you not think the Charlie Mulgrew Saga and, previously, the Jackie McNamara departure, blasts a hole in that reasoning.

Charlie can get bigger wages down South but wants to avoid the upheaval of moving South late on in his career. If Celtic were willing to pay close to what Charlie has been offered, he would probably stay but he is not being offered anything close to it. Similarly, James will be paid more at Blackburn if he goes and even more if he moves to other clubs, and I still suspect a move has been agreed in outline when his agent went missing last Christmas.

We will have to pay Shane Duffy a fair whack to entice him to move too so we will exchange one recently capped ROI international for two long-capped Scottish internationals and will probably pay more to do so.

Now, as it happens, I am in favour of letting Charlie go to his better wages as, similar to all who left on frees after MON, they did not produce any good football after that (I accept Sutton was injured but all those big earners we could have kept- McNamara, Agathe, Hartson and Lennon- did nothing, playing wise, after they left Celtic so we let them go at the right time.

All of this wheeling and dealing depends on whether Duffy is worth it- I hope he is. I will thank Charlie for his services but I will be sorry to see James go- though I am aware it is a minority opinion these days- one of the reasons James seems willing to go.

Shane Duffy has no interest in playing in Scotland…..if he did surely his agent would be telling everybody to make sure he got his contract, in my opinion Shane will go to lower league EPL or Championship wanabee Epl club
