Duffy: “What goes on behind the scenes”

643

“Not many know what goes on behind the scenes”, Shane Duffy’s words on Instagram as he said his goodbyes to Celtic yesterday.  Arriving a year ago as a 28-year-old international with years of English Premiership experience, he looked like the ideal addition to the Celtic squad.

Whatever ailed Shane to prompt Brighton to move him on, a year in Glasgow, much of it in isolation away from family and his kids, did nothing to help.  His parting sentiment alludes to some of his challenges has endured off the park.

If footballers would only be machines, nothing like this would happen.  Competitions would resolve in a manner the aborted European Super League would approve.  Shane was physically fit and desperate to be a winner at Celtic but still came off the rails. You can bookmark him for a reflective piece when his career is over, I expect he will tell a familiar tale of the toll life’s pressures took.

Yip, still no news.  No, not a good sign.

  2. The problem for Scotland, as I see it, is that England not only declared its’ Independence in 2016 it achieved it in December 2019. The sooner all Scots, and all residents in Scotland realise that the better. And once realised it is about deciding what kind of European country we aspire to be and where do we see ourselves in the future. It is not part of one where the folks of Burnley, Bolsover, Durham, Derby, Sedgefield, and Workington see themselves as Tory. Or one where Hartepool, which looks across to Europe does not consider itself part of it. We need to draw up a new Constitution, a new legal system and devise a better form of local government than the Tory construct that we have now. And more. And all the while with the awareness that England got there…

Or it might be that a subservient and / or supportive media are not allowing a critical analysis to be put into the spotlight?

BoJo is playing the jab angle for all that is worth and the media are acting as an echo chamber for his national boosterism.

At some point he needs to be held to account for the disaster that is CoViD19 in the UK.

And he needs to be held to account for all the coin clipping / troughing / self enrichment that was baked into his solution.

39 years ago Maggie lost the Falkland Islands — stupidity / laziness / public sector cuts — and then rode a wave of popularity when the Army / Navy won them back the hard way.

Surely it can’t be allowed to happen again.

I agree with you re A Wightman.

A politician of conviction forced from his political home by the Green gender police.

He and his knowledge of land issues will be a loss to the Parliament.

He was a political jelly fish for the rest of the week.

When push came to shove he was not capable of being a front rank politician.

He ended up being out of his depth where his opinion changed as often as his undergarments.

    Re: political discussion in general.

I like to think of this place as a cyber pub kinda place.

    Celtic aren’t playing this weekend.

The attention of most of the country has been on the election so it’s natural ppl will discuss it.

Anyone not interested is able to scroll past or talk about Celtic instead.

Personally I don’t think it’s reasonable to ask the host to stop lines of conversation (unless clearly abusive) just because the complainer doesn’t like them.

  9. Don’t often get the chance to see full matches involving other Scottish teams. Watched Dundee Utd v Hibs yesterday & presently watching the two Saints at Hampden. How very poor is Scottish top tier football – unbelievable really. Certainly miles below English Championship standard.

In Internet slang, a troll is a person who starts flame wars or intentionally upsets people on the Internet. … Even so, Internet trolling can also be defined as purposefully causing confusion or harm to other users online, for no reason at all.

If progressive politics had the confidence / work ethic / desire that it needs to change the political narrative then it would be hard at work setting the tone for next years jingo-thon.

Putting forward the historically correct viewpoint that Maggie lost the Falklands due to her penny pinching / lack of real world understanding / lack of backbone.

She was a wee boy in a man’s world and thousands died because of it.

The Junta tried it on with Sunny Jim twice and twice he was ahead of the game and waved a couple of flags / wound up the Argentinian Naval Attaché in Madrid by getting his Spanish fan boy of the RN equivalent to spin a few stories about submarines sitting off the coast of Mar del Plata full of Millwall / Portsmouth fans and how this might impact the upcoming world cup.

Thatcher just wanted to shrink the navy / save a few bob and flog / scrap 30% of its capability.

She was that stupid — the junta say its chance — and the rest they say was tragedy.

    That is the reality.

Tory party line via michael gove to my mind was tokenistic at best. He all but dismissed the result and selected only part of the reason why the independent seeking parties done well. He showed distain for those who voted SNP and the greens and inferred they did not know what they were voting for. Charm offensive with a sting.

    …………….

JBH the labour party done great things in the past, ergo we should forget the recent past. Remind me which party introduced private companies and sold off the NHS estates to be replaced by private building the public purse now pays for? Its a rhetorical question cause we both know the answer.

There was a time when labour was a driver for good in the main, but that was a long time ago and the party sold its soul to get into power. It then spend decades making the rich richer while the poor got poorer.

PS when i say the scottish people have spoken, I am not suggesting only SNP voters are scottish or that all Scottish people want independence, rather I am saying in our Democracy a vote has been held and based on that votes the independent parties have gained the seats needed to execute their manifesto promises. If labour, the Tories or LD had secured same I would say exactly the same thing.

The Indy parties — including Greenies who do not want independence only got 49.5% of the vote.

They only have a “mandate” from a flawed / undemocratic system which can be gamed.

No matter — the Nats and Not-Jacinda do not want an indy vote.

They will either lose or be responsible for the pauperisation of the country.

  23. ernie lynch on

Regarding the election, one other point.

There has to be some relief among the Celtic support that the SNP did not get a majority.

So we do not now have the prospect of them trying to reintroduce their Offensive Behaviour by Taigs Lets Even Up The Score legislation.

  24. Saint Stivs on

EL you trot that one out all the time, where is the evidence for a reintroduction of that ? where is it in the policy ?

Without Green Party votes the SNP can’t get any enabling legislation through Holyrood.

Which provides a useful get out clause for the SNP.

And the Greens know which side of their (organic, wholegrain sourdough) bread is buttered (ersatz vegan butter substitute, obviously), so they’ll do what is required.

The Celtic fan Orgs across the spectrum of Organisations do not need any advice from a blogger who has never faced Celtic FC across the table on fan issues, doesn’t have a season ticket, or attend Celtic park just like the various Unionist trolls on CQN today, all the fan orgs can do is ask the questions that need to be asked, that will be done.

Unfortunately with no real power to influence the club other than morality with which to embarrass the club as was done with the living wage issue, they do the best they can do, win battles when they can

Of course, Celtic social media is awash with…………………if it was me I would sort PL and the PLC out, just give me 5 minutes in that room, etc etc………………Yawn
