Duffy: “What goes on behind the scenes”

643

“Not many know what goes on behind the scenes”, Shane Duffy’s words on Instagram as he said his goodbyes to Celtic yesterday.  Arriving a year ago as a 28-year-old international with years of English Premiership experience, he looked like the ideal addition to the Celtic squad.

Whatever ailed Shane to prompt Brighton to move him on, a year in Glasgow, much of it in isolation away from family and his kids, did nothing to help.  His parting sentiment alludes to some of his challenges has endured off the park.

If footballers would only be machines, nothing like this would happen.  Competitions would resolve in a manner the aborted European Super League would approve.  Shane was physically fit and desperate to be a winner at Celtic but still came off the rails. You can bookmark him for a reflective piece when his career is over, I expect he will tell a familiar tale of the toll life’s pressures took.

Yip, still no news.  No, not a good sign.

Not at all, although they both come from the East End of Glasgow and have done well for themselves despite being subject to fat shaming.

    I’ve seen Mone at CP.

I think I mentioned it on here at the time.

Her chauffeur driven Rolls pulled up close to Brother Walfrid’s statue. The chauffeur, fully liveried, got out and opened her door for her and off she waddled in the main door.

Vulgar, classless display of wealth. I suspect she has self esteem issues.

  8. Nothing against Shane Duffy, but I would love to know who scouted and recommended him.

I had no knowledge of this guy before he joined . But a statement from Graham Potter had me worried . When he said Shane didn’t fit into the Brighton system of playing from tha back.

“After full and careful consideration of all the facts and circumstances and of the relevant legislation and case law, the procurator fiscal decided that there was insufficient admissible evidence to raise proceedings for a contravention of Section 12 of the Children and Young Persons (Scotland) Act 1937.”

That means that The Crown decided they would be unlikely to obtain a conviction.

It doesn’t mean the alleged event did not take place as charged.

  12. The header on our pathetic attempts at having a manager in place 3 months after Neil Lennon was sacked are typical of our Lawwellesque approach.

Even more so with CL qualifiers due next month and a whole team of new players urgently required.

The board won’t be too bothered as they have got a ‘new old firm’ to please them.

Looks like the only date I will be celebrating next season will be Wednesday 30th June when Lawwell leaves.

Absolutely, our disaster of a season was made worse with the generally dreadful loan signings we made, who was responsible? Who could possibly have watched Duffy and Kenny and thought they were better than we had? Or more likely did our CEO call his son?

Most of us had some knowledge of SD before he came – he had a load of caps for Ireland and had been a regular in the prem for Brighton and had been their poty.

  20. It gives me no pleasure to share that I was 100% against Duffy signing. I recall posting on here that it takes more than a few you tube videos of a big guy singing Celtic songs in a pub to fill a Celtic shirt. Yes, he has achieved more than all on here could ever dream of, but his lack of form, his shattered confidence and the sheer pig-headedness of Lennon in persevering with 3 CBs played no small part in decimating our defensive form, pre-Christmas.

If he was good enough. Brighton would never have let him go…

As a valued Celtic supporter, we wanted to provide you with an update on a few key subjects.

The Club is working hard to complete the appointment of the new Celtic Manager and relevant football staff and will be doing all we can to confirm this as soon as possible to our supporters.

Rightly there will always be a huge appetite for information from our supporters – unfortunately we are not able to make regular public comment on this matter, but we fully understand and appreciate the need to complete this process as soon as we can.

We also acknowledge and understand the frustration of our supporters during this process, but our objective of course is to ensure that we secure the best candidate possible to take the Club forward and this is our focus. We will update all our supporters through our Club communications channels as soon as we are able to.

We are now in a transitional period in respect of our Chief Executive handover. Peter Lawwell, our CEO is working closely with incoming CEO Dominic McKay on a successful handover to ensure that we are ready for next season across all aspects of the Club, with considerable planning and preparatory work already undertaken.

Importantly, Peter and Dom along with colleagues plan to have met with all our main supporters’ groups by next week. Engagement and dialogue with all our supporters is crucial to everyone at the Club.

We recognise there are many challenges ahead, but we are all ready to tackle these together, with our aim as always, to give our supporters a Club they can be proud of based on the great Celtic values.

We also aim very shortly to make an announcement on Season Tickets. Clearly there are a number of issues concerning the return of supporters to matches and we hope to give our fans as much clarity as possible in terms of the proposals for next year.

Again we understand that supporters are wishing to make plans for next season so these details will be announced by the Club as soon as possible.

Ensuring that our fans can return to Celtic Park is a major priority and we are working closely with all the relevant authorities including the Scottish Government to be ready, when given the go ahead, to safely welcome our supporters back to the stadium.

Again, Celtic will always aim to be at the forefront of these discussions on behalf of our supporters. We want our fans back with us more than anything to create our special Celtic Park atmosphere and we want to do all we can to make this happen for you as soon as possible.

We have not been able to deliver the kind of season we have become so used to and after such a sustained period of success, we sincerely understand the disappointment and frustration of our supporters – now we make it our objective to return the Club to the top in the shortest possible timeframe.

This is the intention of us all at Celtic, as ever we are highly motivated and aiming to do all we can to bring success back to the Club and we are sure, working together with our supporters that this can be achieved.

We thank all our fans for your fantastic continued support.

“Who could possibly have watched Duffy and Kenny and thought they were better than we had?”

I think that would be most Celtic supporters. Duffy was signed to play in a three with Julien and Ajer. There were doubts about his ability with the ball at his feet but nobody raised any doubts about his defending

I don’t remember a single Irish Celtic supporters, who’d watched him for 40 odd international games saying it was a mistake to sign him

It surprised everyone, including people who knew him well as a player that he turned out to be so poor for us. Himself included probably

Sadly part of the reason for the disconnect between the ordinary fan and the board/players.

We live in two different worlds. They expect us to buy season tickets, spend in the shops, bend the knee, do as we are told, sit at the back of the bus and turn up at games. Very much in that order.

You have successfully highlighted our Club’s utter negligence, ineptitude and contempt for us, the support. Such a letter, plus arrangements to meet supporter’s groups, could have been made 10 weeks ago, thereby avoiding a great deal of angst.
