Duffy: “What goes on behind the scenes”

643

“Not many know what goes on behind the scenes”, Shane Duffy’s words on Instagram as he said his goodbyes to Celtic yesterday.  Arriving a year ago as a 28-year-old international with years of English Premiership experience, he looked like the ideal addition to the Celtic squad.

Whatever ailed Shane to prompt Brighton to move him on, a year in Glasgow, much of it in isolation away from family and his kids, did nothing to help.  His parting sentiment alludes to some of his challenges has endured off the park.

If footballers would only be machines, nothing like this would happen.  Competitions would resolve in a manner the aborted European Super League would approve.  Shane was physically fit and desperate to be a winner at Celtic but still came off the rails. You can bookmark him for a reflective piece when his career is over, I expect he will tell a familiar tale of the toll life’s pressures took.

Yip, still no news.  No, not a good sign.

  1. There is a line in Hamlet – “the lady doth protest too much, methinks” – meaning the point, or, points are being laboured hard in an attempt to convince.

The e-mail, in my opinion, falls into this category. One properly written paragraph would have been sufficient.

It tries and fails to give an appearance of good order, like a swan on a calm lake, when actually below the surface they are paddling furiously to stay afloat.

I am much more concerned after reading than before. There is more than a hint of inner turmoil.

  2. I too have received the club email. I also don’t have a problem with it. I would have liked more information on the new Coaching team but I understand the silence until matters are finalised. We do have to deal with a hostile media

On season tickets we don’t know, if and when spectators will be allowed. How Many? What of Family groups? any away Fans? Do we need to have been vaccinated? One or Two jabs? Do you need to wear a mask, what about those who have had it? what about medical issues with Vaccine? How can we travel? Will there be supporters

To sell season books without answers to these questions would be stupid

The club don’t know what the arrangements will be made and no other club to my knowledge has attempted to sell season books.

  3. Play the CL final at Wembley, or, Cardiff, with fans….and the Scottish Cup Final at the biggest available neutral ground, with fans. The world had been turned upside down with Covid, why then can’t contract arrangements for football matches?

Someone must have tipped the board off that the natives are getting restless for them to even bother with that pointless email .

Well, well, I assumed, on reading Kelvinbhoy’s email, that it was a clever spoof on being loquacious while saying absolutely nothing, especially because he did not say who signed it. That email could have been written 10 weeks ago, as it includes no detail whatsoever, not even a generic outline of aims, objectives, tentative schedules and target dates. The epitome of a poor communication strategy. Are they actually trying their best to disillusion as many fans as possible?

That statement. P67’s final line. It’s not done is it? Could things be about to get worse?

I’ve said before -if Howe won’t commit, move on. Having royally screwed up this season it looks like this clown shoe Board are performing an encore for next.

  8. Modern PR suggests that, in the face of adverse publicity (i.e. no manager) you get your message out quickly and often to try to shape the ongoing narrative or to squeeze it until it becomes last week’s news.

I don’t see how any useful message over the delicate negotiations over a new manager can assuage any of our anger and disappointment, exept the one that announces he’s here.

I don’t demand that Celtic constantly communicate with me; I prefer to judge them on hteir actions not their promises. So, weekly instalments of the thrilling adventure “The Search For A New Manager” is not for me. I want them to say nothing that pisses off a prospective good appointment.

We berate Celtic for not talking to us and when they talk to us, we say “What is this pish you’re telling us”

I will chill, wait and then judge our new guy on how the team is shaping and how we are playing.

    Everything else is fluff

  9. Why not just release a relevant statement – Who wrote this tripe?

350 words of waffle, when 80 words would have done – the pandering is obnoxious.

This would have been so much more professional.

The Club is working to complete the appointment of a new Celtic Manager and staff. We aim to secure the best candidate for the position and will update you through our club channels as soon as the process is complete

CEO Peter Lawwell, and Dominic McKay plan to meet with all our main supporters’ groups by next week, when the return of supporters to matches will be also be high on the agenda.

An announcement on Season Tickets will be forthcoming very shortly,

  15. P67,

Quick point and hopefully not being too pedantic

Duffy has not been here a year he was signed following our CL exit at the end of August

Regardless of his performances since he was one of our main signings and arrived after the horse had bolted, failing to prepare for these games is an art we are very good at

Anyway hopefully we get some good news soon

  16. “Not many know what goes on behind the scenes”,

Many on CQN post in a manner which suggests that they know !!

The predictable response to that might be ` Well, we would know if we were kept informed.`

Less predictable is accepting that there may be very good reasons why certain matters cannot be made public.

Whilst I am on, what is the point of saying `could have, should have or would have`? All these really mean is `didn`t`. As a spontaneous expression of regret/anger then fine but to repeat as nauseam is pointless.
