Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

no worries. if you are flying back via dusseldorf – you may wish to spend a day or so ijn that city too. It is really nice -. old harbour etc etc, and very affluent. Dortmund is a bit more industrial. They are (as you have no doubt seen) geographically very close to one another – essentially part of the same huge urban conurbation.

Funny. It a wee bit pathetic.

They Re obviously in a very bad place – 6 full time players- ouch!

Not sure I like a young niave guy working his job being ridiculed for the sins of his highly paid bosses though.

The caller did not once ridicule the person who took the phone call.

  10. You can only ignore reality for so long.

First we had the old Rangers-Are-Financially-Stable-And-Can’t-Go-Bust lie.

Then we had the old Administration-Is-A-Good-Thing-We’ll-Be-Out-In-A-Week lie.

Then we had the old HMRC-Will-Do-A-Deal-No-Prospect-Of-Liquidation lie.

Then we had the old New-Rangers-Will-Be-In-The-SPL lie.

Each of these lies unravelled over time, as lies are wont to do. I’m now looking forward to the old Sevco-Is-Rangers-Except-For-The-Debt-It-Is-The-Same-Rangers-The-Club-And-The-Company-Are-Separate lie unravelling over the next week or so as well.

Do you mean David Murray? David Murray bought those guys years ago. He bought them. He paid for things (succulent lamb et cetera) which means they are too conflicted to do their jobs properly.

Nothing they say has any value whatsoever.

Someone has fallen asleep over at iShortbread. SPL page still full of stories about them, and Club 12 not yet changed to Dundee FC.

Meanwhile over on SFL Div 3 still no sign of the Horribles.

Remember how long it took BBC Scotland to subtract the requisite ten points from their published tables when Rangers went into administration in February.

Paul and ItaliaBhoy and other people in the know assure us plenty of Tims work at BBC Scotland and I’m sure they are right, but there are also definitely people in denial at Pacific Quay.

The quickest growing nasty hedge you can get is ROSA RUGOSA. It actually smells quite nice (if you see that as an advantage), but it will grow 4 ft. in one year and you then just trim it roughly (no great gardening skill required) once it is at the desired height. It also thickens up nicely and (here’s the best bit) it will rip the skin off anyone who is daft enough to try to force a way through it.

I’m probably being ‘too right on’ .. But

Sounded like a young naive daft boy on Hun reception. I would have been more impressed if the Urine had been extracted from a more senior member of staff.. The more senior the more impressed. To me the guy on reception is too much of an open goal..

If anybody knows about domestic security cameras, I would be grateful for any links/advice.

I’ve just installed a camera in my home, a Foscam (get them on Amazon UK) for about £70.

The Foscam FI8918W Wireless IP Camera features high quality video and audio, pan/tilt, remote internet viewing, motion detection, night-vision as well as a built in network video recording system.

It takes about 5 mins to set up and you can watch it on your phone or any PC with internet access

    Hope this helps
