Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

    TBB,

so at the first opportunity to reprimand him, they tell the world unanimously that he represented they intrests throughout this whole episode, that idea is more frightening and says he represented everyone at the spl in corrupting the game, very good.

That’s the kind of forward thinking we’re looking for. Hamish and Rab are always up for a lumber, apparently…

Bob Crampsey was the headmaster at St Ambrose – where he was not the cuddly character he came across as on STV.

  7. “Ramsdens also stock travel money for over 100 currencies” …..though this is of lesser appeal than pawnbroking services to those who will not be travelling to Europe in the foreseeable future.

Didn’t Green say that he’d struggle to pay their full contracts if they were in the 3rd as opposed to the 1st?

This being the case, how does this fit with TUPE, especially if there is a player near the end of his career and on a fair wedge who decides to sit out his contract as carried over by TUPE?

Would Bocanegra or McCulloch get anything like the wages they are on, for contracts up ’til they are 35, anywhere else? Do either of them have future football careers to think of when discussing a reduction of their terms?

I think the answer to those last two would definitely point towards Newco having to shell out £2-3m on either wages or player settlements.

Had a bit of an unexpected chuckle last night. Tim Malone junior asked me who had actually left Rangers already so that he could delete players and have a laugh at the remaining Hun FIFA 2012 playing squad.

Without a word of a lie, before we had even nearly finished the exercise, the game put up an error message saying that any team had to have a minimum of 17 players.

    Oh how we laughed….

    TBB,

it matters not a hot what I suggest, he was given a vote of confidence, he will use that in any future attempts to remove him, how can they now defend any attempts to remove him after this.

Howcan they attempt to clean up the sfa if they cannot clean up their own mess.

    The corruption continues.

Jude, Ramsden’s euro rate but they don’t actually have a “buy” rate. What they do is just put your euros in the window for a couple of weeks then sell you them back at the worse rate.

Congratulations to your grandson. I had a look on the SFA website earlier….nada, rien, zilch, niet……

  23. TBB – further to my previous post today, was in laughing at the Morlocks on FF when for once I picked up a good little nugget.

Apparently there is a rule in Division 3 whereas you cannot charge more than £12 for a game…..

How does that affect the finances of Sevco? £216 is the price ceiling for a season book.

  24. thomthethim CQN (genuine) Badge Wearer on

So the position is that Sevco are being ” facilitated” into the SFL, without fulfilling the requirements for membership of the SFA.

By extension then, whenever the next club dies, as we are assured that they are ready to drop like flies, will they be ” facillitated” by the SFA/ SFL into the league?

Bad news for Spartans et al.

They are still cheating and it may come back to haunt them.

Nah, I have plenty of ideas Ernie, although I’m not sure an inherently flawed system can ever be “fixed”.

I just don’t see the point in a one-sided discussion with you, since you rarely if ever answer direct questions, and prefer to snipe rather than discuss.

You’d think so Bada Bing. We’re fortunate in that it only has a relatively minor effect on us but for folk coming over from Ireland for instance it must be a nightmare with coaches/ferries/flights.

We’ll just either walk a bit faster or slower…if we’re able to walk at all by then! :-)
