Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

  2. Well if Sevco manage year on year promotion back to the top flight, that will be worth of congratulations, and I’ll give to them.

They’re not Rangers and it’s important to remember that at all times because there are many who will continue to try and convince you they are – in order to try and generate some kind of rivalry. They need it for their jobs but it doesn’t exist.

Bocanegra has a couple of offers from MSL clubs awaiting him. Under the terms of the wage cut he agreed back in March, he is able to leave on a free

Edu + Goian are available for circa £250k each. Alexander, Elbows + Bentfoot can sit happily taking their hefty weekly wages. Green has to pay them what they are due, unless of course the company runs out of money and enters admin

Surely that couldn’t happen could it? ;)

Just wanted to acknowledge that you were correct in your assessment of where the Huns would end up unlike pessimistic old me.

You have to admit that the football establishment (and probably the political establishment – whatever happened to that Big Tax Case?) didn’t half try to pull off the big fix.

Just one thing leaves a slightly sour taste. Why Dundee and not Dunfermline? (rhetorical question – I know it’s money).

We have rightly banged on about sporting integrity but I have yet to hear an explanation of how this fits the sporting integrity.

Anyway, thanks to you, Paul67, Phil and many others for exposing light on the shenanigans over the months and years.

Roll on the football. I cannot wait until 29 July when the Huns make their debut in The Quarter Of Sports Mixtures Challenge Cup and the pain of some my darker days as a Celtic supporter being cheated starts to heal.

  8. The SFL and the SFA are apparently trying to renegotiate the deal with Ramsdens due to the likelihood of Sevco playing in it. Ramsdens are being asked to pay a further £16m since, as everybody knows, this is how much Sevco is worth to Scottish football each year.

Aye, they are still expecting us to but into a corrupt game, but in reality we have no other choice sad to say.

I would be happy if the referees were targeted, bring back a level playing field on the pitch and watch the standard flourish.

The huns will still rule in our sectarian little country come what may.

    ……………………………………

They have a novel way over here when dealing with people on benefits.

Make them work for their money, there are about 40 people out today cleaning up the village, planting and pruning trees, painting everything that doesn’t move white, simple really, it would never catch on in britland.

By nice slice, I mean: the full £10k (or whatever he’s on).

Now that the smoke has cleared, and the prospect of a last minute “switcheroo” for Mr Green’s team into the SPL, or SPL2, has gone, we can start to think about football.

However, Mr McCoist is not happy regarding the number of players he has, and the fact that, until Sevco Scotland Ltd is successful in having SFA Membership transferred from Rangers Football Club PLC (in administration) he cannot register any new players.

This also ignores the outcome of the Appellate Tribunal under Lord Carloway, and the suggestions that Mr Green would be asked to accept as a sanction the registration ban declared ultra vires by Lord Glennie.

But fear not Ally – I have had a quick look, and you have got lots of players!

Dundee at Dens Park brings back memeries.

Last time I was there I was arrested for signing “Stephen Hughes has got no Shoes” on repeat. I was wearing my Armagh Jersey so stood out like a sore thumb as I was marched around the back of the goals, as Celtic attacked.

I remember thinking “I hope my ma isn’t watching this and sees me…”

20-odd other Celtic fans arrested that day for equally trivial issues. All one-man to a cell. The Celtic Song got an airing, as did BOTB. But after the cell doors were rattled and everyone told to shut the feck up (replace ‘e’ with ‘u’) the wee guy opposite started signing Queen: I want to break free…

Cue much laughter and futher, Queen related, communal singing.

Dundee? Welcome back. Dens Park? I wont be going back there in a hurry….

The campaign of misinformation with regards to the newhuns ‘history’ has been in full swing for more than a few weeks.

Both BBC and STV, the radio phone ins, and the msm are all doing their bit to appease the newhuns.

It’s the same at work, in pubs and anywhere else you come into contact with a fan of newhuns fc.

In order to challenge the lies, we have to be able to counter their arguements. You maybe heard Duffield the other night on RC. As soon as it was mentioned that the newhuns were a new entity, he immediately came back with whataboutery, citing Celtic in ’94 changing the company’s name. Very easy to fob him off if you know the answer, but how many Celtic fans would be able to resond quickly to his barb?

I read the D.Mail online, and with every comment on a newhuns’s story that mentions ‘punishment’ or ‘demotion’, I try to counter it asap.

We need people to counter their arguements at every turn, correcting them where need be.

Let’s say (no really…) Sevco sells the same number of season tickets as Rangers did last season.

    That’s 40,000 bears at £12 x 18 games per noggin = £8.6 Million.

Bit of sponsorship – Tennents deal ended with liquidation – say £500K

    Some trackside – £250K

Bit of Corp Hosp – £250K

Slice of BBC Alba deal – £10K

Trickle down of SPL Solidarity Payment – £30K

Lucky draws v Celtic in both Cups comps – £2M

It is near impossible for Sevco to generate more the £12M revenue in D3 and D2, and in all likelihood, will be lucky to get even half of that.

In the meantime, they need to rebuild their retail operation as the JJB deal expired with liquidation.

They need to procure a first team, albeit the requisite standard of player is somewhat easier to find…

Fag packet says Sevco needs to pony up £8M to float the club and cover costs in season 1, similar again for every season outside of the top flight.

When they get into the top flight, they can look forward to another big cash demand to support player recruitment to play in the SPL. That’s when the fans will need to subscribe for shares.

Sevco will be able to offload the shares when they next qualify for Europe, earliest around 4 years from now, more likely 2017, by which point they will have burned upwards of £40M of investors’ cash.

Of course the bears will weigh-in big style, and buy out Sevco for a meaningful return on its investment, say 20% over 5 years, so say £50M from the fans summer of 2016. Bit of a problem with that bit.

    Doesn’t really work, does it…

  21. Sevco can call itself any old thing it wants as far as I’m concerned…..WE don’t have to deal with that load of howlers any more…and if they’re stupid enough to call themselves any variation of ‘ragers’ and try to have whatever transferred over from the corpse, then they’ll find BDO and HMRC right on their case with very sharp knives. No more do they have the ‘protection’ of the masonic cabal that used to run the show in Scotland. After the fall of their beloved propaganda wing (rfc) they’ll be left back in the 17th. Century where they belong as the rest of Scotland quickly catches up with itself.

I think you’ll find, that as of today, everything that has transpired was really a cunning plan of Jabba’s all along…..well,that’s what he’ll tell everyone anyway,as he hauls his fat around Glasgow.

The opposite is a fear filled attitude, the attitude of Regan and Doncaster and Jabba and the msm generally.
