Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

Bob Crampsie reckoned the best Scottish club side he had ever seen was the Dundee team that reached the semi final of the European Cup in 1962/3.

    The man was an idiot.

From Wikipedia: Robert “Bob” Crampsey (8 July 1930 – 27 July 2008) was a Scottish association football historian, author and broadcaster, described as a “much loved Scottish cultural institution” by The Times.

He had a Doctorate in Sports Journalism from Stirling University.

Born in Glasgow, Crampsey was a widely respected pundit on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsound from 1987 until retiring in 2001. He was also a mainstay of STV’s Scotsport. Crampsey was the author and editor of the Now You Know column of the Glasgow Evening Times, where he would answer sporting questions submitted by readers, until 2006.

A graduate of the University of Glasgow and former head teacher of St. Ambrose High School in Coatbridge, Crampsey was 1965’s “Brain of Britain”. He followed this up eight years later by reaching the semi-finals of Mastermind, choosing the American Civil War as his specialist subject. He was also an associate of the Royal College of Music and a keen fan of Somerset County Cricket Club. He served in the Royal Air Force from 1952 to 1955.

He also taught history at Holyrood. He and his brother both played in goals (at different times) for Queens Park.

  5. I am totally surprised at the number of green huns who come on here and denigrate people on benefits.

The only reason most of us are here at all is because of ‘the cradle to the grave’ ethos of the NHS (and if you think free medical care isn’t a ‘benefit’ then you’re insane) and the lifting out of poverty for so many of the poor, disadvantaged and disabled.

If you want to see ‘benefit scroungers’ you need look no further than both houses of parliament and the ‘royal’ family.

There are books, such as ‘The Profitable Use of Unemployment’,by V. Illich, but then the kinda folk who slag people less fortunate than themselves are completely brainwashed, and thus immune to reason and debate.

Remember Brother Walfrid and exactly why he started up our club, before you start spouting ‘thatcherism’ and all the vile ideas associated with it.

Remember that one of the things that fascist old boot liked to quote from the bible, ffs, was,”Those who shall not work, shall not eat.”,as she wandered off into another taxpayer funded beanfeast.

The use of the word ‘Facilitate’ intrigues me. I suspect this is a subtle hint that Sevco Scotland Ltd. were not expecting to be offered a position in Division Three and therefore are not prepared for what has come to pass.

This post reiterates my inference drawn from your earlier post, I doubt that Sevco will be able to raise enough cash in time for operating costs and then of course there is the question how many players can they persuade to sign?

We keep being told that Scottish football is as poor as its ever been, and much of the blame does lie at the door of Murray and his illegal spending. However it annoys me to hear anyone, especially the msm, sticking the boot into football in this country. Its obvious we are victims of the gross imbalance in TV revenues and cant compete with the bigger nations. Having said that, both ourselves and the huns have reached Euro finals in the last decade. Scotland can only be fairly judged against nations of similar size. If we take the following- Sweden Switzerland Denmark Austria Croatia Norway and Greece, and add in bigger nations like Turkey Russia and Poland, the comparisons make for good reading. Off the top of my head, Scotland has a better club european record than all these countries. Our clubs have reached 9 finals, winning 3 trophies.

Paul67 mentioned the exploits of Dundee in the early 60’s and he’s right; they produced some terrific performances, as did Kilmarnock (who lost a fairs cup semi to Leeds the night before Lisbon), Dunfermline who shouild have made the 65 fairs cup final, and Hibs who thrashed Napoli around the same era. In fact most teams in the SPL can shout about something they’ve done in Europe. The greatest achievement being our lot becoming the first non-latin club, first British, first Northern European club etc to win the big cup. I agree that Scottish football has seen better times, when the playing field was more level, but as a wee country of 5 million, we can hold our heads high in general terms. As another aside, Scotland is also the biggest supported football nation in Europe per capita.

  19. I remember that golden generation of Dundee players you mention in your leader, Paul. Their results were no fluke and their general play was way ahead of the time. The players I remember were Gilzean, Ure and Penman, I think.

In about 1960 they came to a packed CP as league leaders and were one up at HT. I should have been 1-1 but a goal from a very young Bobby Lennox was chalked off for ungentlemanly conduct ie running too fast. Jim Brogan’s brother got the equaliser and big Billy out-jumped Ian Ure to head the winner in the 90th minute.

BTW Celtic weren’t even remotely in the hunt for that title. They just did what Celtic did then – play brilliantly one game in four then revert to loser mode.

  23. Rivera the best away player seen at CP?- cant agree great player though he was although I thought his predecessor the Uruguyan Schiaffano better. My memories of the 69 ECQF was that the Rosseneri barely crossed the halfway line apart from the Prati goal and their goalie, Albertosi, performed heroics. Truth be told we should have beat them home and away.As for Rivera being past it I dont think so he was probably still in his mid 20’s. Now Bobby Murdoch ……

some of us long time lurkers can remember Bob Crampseys great Dundee team, and might almost -I do say almost – agree with him. One thing that is not in dispute- in my estimation-is that Mr Crampsey was one of the fairest sports commentators ever to grace the airwaves in Scotland-and manifestly was not an idiot sir.
