Dundee and the heights of Scottish football history

834

Congratulations to Dundee FC who return to the top flight of Scottish football for the first time in seven years.  Back in the 60s Dundee were a top European team.  They won the league in 1962 and in the preliminary round of the European Cup they trounced West German champions, Cologne, 8-1 at Dens.  Cologne put a more respectable face on the aggregate result two weeks later, winning 4-0 in front of 40,000 fans.

Dundee went on to beat Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon 4-2 on aggregate in the first round proper, this while Portuguese runners-up, Benfica, retained the European Cup only five months earlier.  If the Cologne result was the most enduring in the collective memory, the 4-1 win over Sporting at Dens was one of the all-time great results in Scottish football history.

Anderlecht were next victims, losing 1-4 in front of 65,000 fans in Brussels before the fairy tale ended in the semi final against eventual winners, Milan, at a packed San Siro.  A Wembley final against Benfica was Milan’s prize, a tie Dundee would surely have fancied.

The result against Cologne is historically the most impressive but this was not the case at the time.  This was a period before the Bundesliga when West German teams participated in regional leagues, with the winners playing-off to enter the European Cup.  Once German teams were able to join a financially prosperous league instead of being shackled by historical custom, they never looked back.  Dundee, like all Scottish clubs, are disenfranchised from the history they could be creating by the poor value of their TV market.

It’s time for a change, not just for the sake of Celtic!  If only the guys running the show knew the history and heritage of the team promoted today, or believed in the potential of Scottish clubs.

  1. With two goalkeepers, you’d think that the Spiders would have fared better than they have done over the last 50 or 60 years.

If Bob Crampsie made his Dundee-best-team remark in 1966, he was probably correct.

Think he was referring to the 62/3 side that got to the semi final of the European Cup.

    TBB,

    “SPL Board

Board members are elected annually by representatives of the 12 SPL clubs and meet monthly to discuss strategic issues. The Board’s main responsibility is for corporate governance, strategic development, the delivery of the SPL objectives and the application of the SPL Rules.

The current SPL Board is made up of Ralph Topping (SPL Chairman), Neil Doncaster (SPL Chief Executive), Eric Riley (Celtic FC), Stephen Thompson (Dundee United FC), Derek Weir (Motherwell FC) and Steven Brown (St Johnstone FC).”

It doesnt say anyone is permanant, so it would appear the poster earlier is right, they were all unanimously elected onto the board today, how they choose to publicise the results is a problem indeed, however the above is the proceedure undertaken at todays AGM, unless you can find proof this was not the case, I looks like the question remains relevant.

  8. Is the Ramsdens Cup sponsored by the fish and chip shoppies? Coisty will be biling if it is and thems don’t win it… awe that free fat and colesterol he’ll miss out on… poor bloke.

In all of my 50 years plus,of watching football,I would say that Pele was the best, but I never saw him playing except on TV.

Gianni Rivera,of all the player I have seen in a live game, was the most majestic,he didn’t run across the pitch,he glided, his touch/vision was awesome,I can still see him now,as he played at Celtic Park.

The man was in a class of his own,a absolute pleasure to watch, even against Celtic.HH

Sadly, you are fundamentally correct on virtuallyevery point that you make.

Yes,we can blame the private sector for the failing, but we have to blame the ethos which invited them into the process in the first place-which,btw,without point-scoring was introduced by Mrs T-but we also have to look at the oversight involved.

Blame is applicable on so many levels.

It is much the same with the long-term unemployed-we can blame the people involved, but again,we have to look at the oversight, and once again,Mrs T was responsible for introducing that culture.

We have to look beyond blame, look beyond partisan politics, and plan a future for the far too many people have been left without one.

Because, like it or not, there but for the Grace of God go a great many of us.

I used to stand next to Jenny Bond in the Jungle – she would always share her carry-oot with the Bhoys.

  16. fanadpatriot,

my father took me to Hampden to see Scotland play Brazil in a warm up for the ’66 workd cup. Pele played that day. Unfortunately, I was only 9 so don’t remember if he was any good or not. I do remember that by the time we got in (after 20 minutes or so) all the scoring had been done. A 1-1 draw with Stevie Chalmers scoring in the first minute. The chances are some of the Scotland fans didn’t cheer.

  17. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

It was Jenny Bond who got on the park that day and attempted to lamp Gordon Strachan, when he was playing for the Dons.

  19. FanandPatriot agreed great player. Was luck y enough to see Pele at Hampden in 1966 Stevie Chalmers scored in 1-1 draw . The greatest ever? probably- its between Pele Best and Cruyff for me

  20. Jenny Bond goes postal if you call her Jenny. She is actually Jennie Bond (though she does respond to Jen the Tim, skelper of huns and minor royalty

An Inverclyde cafe proprietor told me that his father had played in goal for AC Milan in the 1930s. Even more interesting was his story that his father had compiled a dossier for AC before the 1969? ECQF. It included Jim Craig’s habit of feinting to shy the ball forward at throw-ins then throwing it to Billy McNeill. Well, Prati intercepted one of those throw-ins and the rest is history.

Good story but I was still a bit sceptical. Sure enough the son produced the letter from the AC directors thanking the ex-pat supporter for his invaluable advice.
