Dundee United 0-1 Celtic

940

Celtic did enough in the opening 16 minutes to put this game beyond Dundee United but only managed to score once, an excellent effort from Gary Hooper, before United tightened up and made a contest of the game.

Georgios Samaras sprung past the United defence inside the first 30 seconds and squared the ball across the six yard line but Stokes arrived a split-second late to convert. That signalled a period of relentless Celtic pressure as the home team found it impossible to get out of their own half or hodl any kind of possession.

Gary Hooper controlled a long clearlance inside the centre circle on 12 minutes before knocking the ball square to James Forrest, who had space to exploit.  Forrest drove forward before returning the pass to Hooper inside the box.  The Celtic striker turned outside Gunning before driving a shot low inside Dusan Pernis’ right had post to open the scoring.

Celtic continued to press forward with Forrest again involved in their most dangerous moves.  The young winger threaded a through ball to Anthony Stokes on the edge of the area before racing past the defensive line to meet the return pass on the volley but his shot struck Pernis.

Give-and-go football was proving effective for Celtic and on 41 minutes Cha Du-Ri played a one-two with Forrest but could not convert his shot.

Celtic were so dominant in the first half their only real concern must have been why they were not further ahead but the second half proved to be more of a contest.  Dundee United’s passing was poor all afternoon but Celtic slipped to their level, frequently succumbing to unforced errors.  The visitors were never in any trouble defensively but Neil Lennon decided to shake things up in midfield, and substituted central defender, Glenn Loovens, pulled Victor Wanyama back and brought Scott Brown into midfield.

The subsequent change, bringing Ki on for Stokes gave Celtic more athleticism and meant that the final few minutes, which are often tense when defending a one goal lead, were contested almost exclusively in the United half.  Fraser Forster had a few catches and the odd punch but had a relatively easy afternoon.

Meant to add a link to the White Ribbon Campaign, announcing Celtic FC’s support. Here it is:

Thanks for explaining the significance of the White Ribbon to me. I noticed it on our jerseys and also the Dundee United jerseys. Glad to see that we have become involved in this. Domestic violence has no place in our society. Women (and men) must be protected.

  7. Why do these experts mention the “fact” that we were 12 points behind? Going into the Fir Park game we were 15 FIFTEEN points behind, cos the bad boys won the day before. Are they all in denial?

In Carluke, the building used to celebrate Mass isn’t as big as a Church, therefore it is called a Chapel. If I was going to Mass in, for example, Hamilton the building is far bigger and therefore called a Church and I would have said I was at Church.

Either way, I took part in an enjoyable celebration of the Eucharist and my Faith.

    Great result today:

The type of perfromance that brings the league home on prizegiving day

Fraser starting to clout people when commanding the ba’ and his area…word will soon get ’round our opponents. Good!

Cha..some nice runs and a few decent crosses and interplay. adequate cover.

Glenda. Not really troubled but still get impression he dizny like the roughish stuff. Still to be convinced he is first team calibre.

Dan. Sometimes he looks the part. Tho’ big fellah should be able to head a ball farther than his shadow ..and in the right direction. He seems to struggle to move and time his leaps. Want to be convinced, but far too often he seems unsure/wobbly.

Matty – did ok and prefer him at home on the right. Needs to fix his crossing/corners

Jamesy- more than once thought to myself..Kenny did that ..and that ..and still getting better and better..my oul’ da’ agrees!

Vic67- As solid and capable a player as we are ever likely to find at our level of fitba/budget. The real deal!

Beram- oozing energy and attitude. Every good team needs that type of player. Oh Aye!

Sammi- everything we knew he could become and tremedous credit to Lenny for sticking with the big man. Matchwinner in big games.

gHoops- linking so well with jamesy and stokesy, touch and finish is purity personified. Keep moving son and ye’ll be a great.

Stokesy- working harder now and getting rewards- linking well with jamesy and ghoops. tho’ needs to keep the heid up when things not quite going his way. With the right attitude can stay regular 1st team player.

Broony- there are games coming up when we will rely on his energy and aggression. I don’t see him as a first 11 player in most games. Must play v currants!

Ki- still potentially our best player and adds something no-one else has – not for every game here- poise!

Lenny – looking relaxed and confident – 3 crucial points no goals lost and keeping his large squad involved and on the right track

As for thems- they look awful and yesterday’s ‘penalty’ was a joke…must be formally challenged by our club…..totally shocking!

Right then… who’s next for shaving

  19. Hi there, I’m writing this to thank you all for you’re nice words and prayers when I was born 4 months premature. It was a real hard time for mum and dad but things are looking up now, just at the same time as things are looking very good with my fav team – the famous Glasgow Celtic.

Anyway, one of my hundreds of uncles has created a FB page to let me show you some pictures of my wee Hoopy on tour around the world of Celtic.

I would like to thank St Stivs FP for purchasing (a big word for a wean, but I am a tim) Hoopy and I’m really excited to get him home, my uncle Vmhan and GL2 have told me that it’ll be a few years before I get to see wee Hoopy as he’s on a tour of the Celtic family around the world. I’m hoping to see photos of wee Hoopy from all those wonderful places that Uly…. long word, I’ve not learned that one yet, anyway all the places around the world like Australia, Canada, Brazil, Ireland (not too keen on Londonderry uncle Coorslad) etc.

My wee Hoopy’s tour started off at Celtic Park way back in Sept. when Hoopy was at the Ramie meet in Glasgow, Vmhan left hoopy in the pub (he does that a lot I’m told), then GL2 took him down the water to Greenock, but the big so and so left me on the train, probably off the same boat, those two eeejits (is that a real word? my dad Ton Che Dan uses it a lot), anyway a nice couple handed wee Hoopy into the Greenock Celtic supporters club and there he stayed until the 30th Nov when Hoopy got to his 1st Celtic game, then Hoopy erm hoofed it into the Gallowgate with an auld pal of Vmhans, Jamie Skelton. Great fun was had that night and hoopy met a few nice barmaids and other strange folk ( well it was Halloween) and finished up in Sharkeys no less to meet Estadio.

Anyway check out my facebook page and let me know if you like it, Mon the HOOPY!

  21. Just scrolled back a few pages, and agree with the analysis of the match from the varied posters.

Thought Kayal was great, Stoksey bad day at the office, Sammi ok in the first half, corners and throw ins abysmal.

One point that has’ne been raised is the tackle on Cha a millisecond after he shot in the first half, a clear penalty, and not mentioned by the commentators.

    Its it just me?
