Dundee United 1-0 Celtic

258

Celtic were careless in possession throughout this game but it would be wrong to suggest it was a lackadaisical performance, if anything the champions were hurried in possession when a bit more composure and patience was required.

The Dundee United goal came as a result of poor defending.  United won a corner on Celtic’s right which was taken short before the cross came in.  Scott Robertson met the ball 7 yards from goal and placed a header into the corner of the net giving Fraser Forster no chance.

Celtic enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the game but failed to make anything of it before going behind, however, Kris Commons soon sparked into life.  On 29 minutes Gary Hooper knocked the ball down to Commons who fired in a shot which was deflected wide.

Commons then fed Hooper whose shot from 25 yards was spilled by Pernis in the United goal.  The final seconds of the first half should have led to a Celtic goal.  Commons’ shot from outside the box was saved by Pernis but United could not clear the chance and when the ball broke back to Commons he fired a cross along the six yard line which Anthony Stokes completely missed with an empty goal in front of him.

The second half was most notable for the procession of ineffective cross balls Celtic threw into the Dundee United box.  With Charlie Mulgrew playing in central defence his delivery from wide positions was badly missed.

Tony Watt replaced Stokes at half time and immediately stirred things up, forcing Pernis into a good save from a header soon after the break.  Within a minute he forced another save which Pernis could only parry.

While Mulgrew was missed on the wing he twice blocked shots which could have put United two ahead.  MacKay-Steven crossed for Jon Daly who was denied by Mulgrew while late in the game the Celtic defender halted a Jonny Russell effort.

Gary Hooper put Celtic’s best chance of the game inches wide after Kris Commons (again) linked play to set him up for a shot inside the box.

  1. No need to comment on Celtic, but I’m pretty bemused by a Dundee United side who can lie down to Rangers on Wednesday yet fight for every ball and raise a hand for every ball that goes out the park, who can cheer and celebrate a win as if it means a damn. We have in the SPL a cheating club, a cheating set of officials and a cheating squad of players who cheated their fans on Wednesday.

One glance at the messageboards of for example Aberdeen will tell you the state of the SPL and the feelings of the support towards their chairmen and thems as a club. The game in Scotland is flatlining, and a clutch of sad, desperate SPL chairmen, instead of administering CPR to the sound of ‘Staying Alive’ will tomorrow unplug the switch.

  2. No injuries

We needed a scalpel today – but seemed to have chosen a cleaver.

May I be the first to congratulate Charlie Mulgrew on his award later tonight?

  5. (This was posted on my blog by Disenfranchised Splfan:)

I have been trying to post the following on CQN, but I can’t seem to be able to get a log-in to allow me to do it, I wondered if you would mind posting it, I am trying to post it on various Celtic and other fan sites.

    Fellow Scottish football fans.

I am, like most of you, thoroughly disenchanted with the tax fraud which is about to be perpetuated on Scottish football by the owners, new and old, of Rangers Football Club in Administration, with the active assistance of the custodians of our game, both the league administrators, and the owners of many of our clubs. The comments of the Kilmarnock chairman yesterday, in which he made clear that commercial considerations outweigh integrity, laid stark the calculation which has been made by many of them.

I have also felt pretty powerless – this sting is taking place in front of our eyes, we all know that it is happening, and it’s hard to see what we can do to stop the perpetrators. The situation is not helped by the Scottish media’s endorsement and spinning of the efforts to drop a brand new team into the SPL, “cleansed” of the debt which allowed their predecessors to cheat their way to success for a generation. I’m not telling you anything you don’t know here, but it’s worth repeating it anyway – if they succeed with their cynical plan, I see no point in continuing to follow my team. When cheats are deliberately allowed to prosper, there is no sport.

Here’s the rub – we Scottish football fans can threaten to withdraw our support, but by the time that this is tested, it’s too late. If we collectively follow through on our threat to give up Scottish football, our action will be after the event. They have made a calculation that whatever support is lost in the long term will be outweighed by the commercial benefits of retaining some form of Rangers, playing at Ibrox, in the SPL. And by presenting it as a fait accompli, they may be right in their assumption that most fans will ultimately prefer not to punish their own team by walking away when it is too late to stop it happening anyway.

So what to do? I have mulled over this for a long time, and I believe that there is a way that Scottish football fans can flex their collective muscles ahead of the fix. But we have to act in unison (which means dropping inter-supporter rivalries for the intervening period) and we need to act quickly.

The football season is almost over, and the remaining games are generally irrelevant (I recognise that a few teams still have important issues to resolve). I believe that we can all make a strong collective statement by unsubscribing from Sky Sports and ESPN now. Right now. No not once the season is over, I mean NOW!

To be clear, the broadcasters have, as yet, done nothing wrong, but we need to make it clear to them now that if this fraud is perpetuated, the SPL rights for which they pay millions of pounds a year are worthless.

It is not enough to simply unsubscribe – we need a website in which every Sky Sports and/or ESPN customer who has unsubscribed posts their account number (which I don’t believe carries any significant data protection issues – or if it does, just enough digits to usefully identify the account to the broadcaster) and the team which they support. Through this, the value of the lost business can be made transparent.

If 10,000 people do that, at a rough guess that’s worth in the region of £3,600,000 a year to the broadcasters. If 100,000 people do that, it’s worth around £36,000,000 a year. That’s what we should be aiming for.

Will this work? Only if there is a rapid mass movement to unsubscribe. Many people do unsubscribe for the summer anyway, fans of every team should be doing so now and making it clear on one website that they will not resubscribe in August if this con is pushed through. If only a few people participate, we can conclude that the will is not actually there to do anything meaningful, not enough fans actually care enough, and we collectively deserve what we get.

But I believe the will is there, and if this is done effectively, it will send the strongest possible message to the leaders of Scottish football, and the broadcasters, that Scottish football is worth a lot less with newco parachuted into the SPL than without it.

This needs leadership. My hope is that this cause is quickly taken up, and that somebody feels that they have the ability and time to get this moving and get a website up and running. I believe it needs somebody to reach out to fans of every SPL team, and find individuals amongst the support of each team who will lead and cajole their support. It must go well beyond the users of online forums (though every forum should be approached) to the grassroots and wider support of every team.

As a footnote, I am a Celtic fan, and a very occasional poster, though avid reader of CQN and RTC. But on this, I think my allegiance is irrelevant.

Agreed the team was still strong, but with Matthews in midfield, no Wanyama at the start, and Samaras absent we weren’t as solid as we could have been.

Not that I’m too bothered. United took their best chance, they always give us a tough game, and I’ve watched us play poorer and win.

  9. Was channel hoping abit during the 2nd half.

At one point I jumped to New/ManCity just as Cliche was having his jersey tugged by Ben Arfa, then again and then BA just runs into the back of GC to foul him.

I said to the wife ‘that must be a yellow card’.

The ref, who is paid handsomely to apply the laws of the game, called BA over and correctly booked him.

Jumped back to Utd/Celtic just as Tony Watt turns Dillon (?) and heads into the box goalwards Dillon pulls Watts jersey once, then twice. brines, who is paid handsomely to apply the laws of the game, awards the foul but for some incredible reason thinks he can decide when to apply the laws of the game and doesn’t book the Utd player.

Thats the difference with this inbred cesspit of a country. Our refs on £850 a game I think do everything they can to hinder us in every game we play.

My love for Celtic will only get stronger after this season but scottish football is something I pay good money to hate at the moment, and I wont keep throwing money at a corrupt and hun bent league for much longer.

I truly hate this inbred retarded scum hun country.

  10. Any statement from celtic yet? Thought not. Once again they take our support for granted – but this time its a step too far.

Right I am actually off out to go to the PFA awards tonight – should be fun – would any of you like me to say anything to the players?

  11. Baku/Black Isle Celt on

I find it incredible how many people come on here and claim they will not renew season tickets / watch another game due to another teams cheating.

Neil Lennon stated a few days ago that this is not a tainted title because we have not cheated. The same applies for the future, why punish Neil and his squad for others cheating?

As long as Celtic votes against newco in the SPL our integrity is intact. Any Celtic supporter withholding money they would normally give to the club via tickets or merchandising is actively helping newco get back to winning ways.

Support Celtic, bury them while we can, newco will lose support of the hun hoards very quickly if Celtic are vastly superior over the next few seasons but they need our support to achieve this. Let the chairmen of other clubs know how we feel by depriving them of the Green pound, it’s them that want the huns not us.

Give Neil and his young squad our full support – they will bury any newco with our help. Nobody from Celtic has said that we need the huns yet too many supporters are implying that they have.

    MJM

  12. As I unsubscribe from Sky & ESPN I will be asking them to make a note of precisely why I am doing this.

If a scabrous NewCo is manipulated into the spl then my days of giving money to watch a complete & utterly corrupt laughing stock of a league, replete with corrupt refereeing will be over.

Channel67 will be the choice ( they could make a mint with some thought) and , grudgingly, Sportscene. And I will watch The Bhoys when I can make the journey.

I will NEVER stop supporting The Bhoys, but I cannot countenance the continuation and bloated expansion of what is looking more and more like outright criminality & a wholesale abandonment of morality.

That may be the status quo for Rankers, but it is NOT the Celtic way.

No need for Celtic to make a statement today or recently. Essentially nothing has happened except thems going into administration and being deducted ten points – no need to comment after that. There’s a long way to go in this saga, and that gives ample time for a Celtic statement. Still, it allows you to have a pop at the board in your usual pathetic, stirring way. It’s the board’s fault I tell you, Lawwell’s fault we kept Neil, Desmond’s fault we won the league. Yawn.

As stated before we do have the makings of a right good team , but we also have positions within the team that need improved upon .. Re the SPL vote , my understanding is that this only comes into play if ( if) tha SFA grant NewDignity a football license, which their own rules expressly forbid. There is no way that the SFA can provide this license, as this particular rule is designed to bring a measure of sanity to the commercial aspects of football.

The SPL chairmen can wring their hands as much as they like about sporting integrity v commercial interests, it is not their decision. In that sense, the SPL chairmen at this point in time do not have to make a decision, therefore they will not make a decision on Monday and the whole circus moves on.

Dignity’s friends in the MSM can squeal all they like, the rules will be upheld, everyone will just have to deal with the consequences of Dignity going out of business and not playing next year.

  21. Sorry to interrupt the post match debate.

Coming back to my car after the game on Thursday night, I found a watch ( in Fielden St, I think). I checked the make and it’s not particularly expensive but it has a very distinctive face and I suspect it may have been lost by someone who supports the GB. I tried to leave a message on their site but my works PC wasn’t having it.

I may be wasting time trying to find the owner but thought it worth a try. If anyone has access to their site perhaps you could leave a message. If that doesn’t work, then I’ll post it on ebay and try and make some funds for BRHT’s justgiving charity.

    DJBEE,

English football not as corrupt as Scottish?

The team that are odds on to win the EPL are reliant on the vast majority of funds coming from rich owners not from income streams such as tickets, merchandising and sponsorship. Losses well outwith UEFA fair play proposals.

Are you claiming that the SPL Champions only won due to corruption?

I think Scottish football has to think very seriously before they allow newco Rangers to start out in the SPL. I honestly think the game will lose thousands of supporters if it happens all credibility will be gone cheats will know they can cheat and there will be very little punishment. The football authorities will be asking fans to pay money to follow Scottish football even though those fans will know cheating has gone on in the past and is very likely to go on in the future due to the authorities having no backbone and pandering to the cheats.I for one will be watching my last Celtic match next Sunday if the vote is for Newco Rangers to start in the SPL.H.H.

  31. EKBhoy,

Yes, a team can only play in the SPL if it has the appropriate licence – a UEFA Club Licence..

The SFA can only award this to a club that has been an SFA member for three years, which clearly a Newco won’t be.

Only UEFA can grant an exception to the three year rule. The SFA does not have the power to do so.
