Do you remember the game after the Cluj Champions League debacle last August? Of course you do, you are still chasing the cold from you bones, it was a League Cup encounter with Dunfermline at Celtic Park, where the Championship club took the game to extra time. The game, the only domestic cup tie in 34 games we have not won in 90 minutes, was six minutes from going to penalties before James Forrest settled things.
I don’t know what happened in the dressing room between Cluj and Dunfermline but I cannot imagine it is a happier workplace this week. This is Celtic and everything goes on the line every game. Let’s not have a repeat of the Dunfermline performance.
I know a few Motherwell fans and they are unanimous in their praise of David Turnbull, their star 21-year-old midfielder who joined Celtic on a reported £3m deal yesterday. Turnbull originally signed for Celtic in June last year, before failing a medical. A knee operation, and the best part of a year in recuperation, saw him clinch his dream move yesterday.
The question now for the manager is, how does he shape his midfield? Therein lies the answer to our season.
Welcome to Celtic, David.

GLENDALYS – my reading too!

I don’t know who Neil picks as a transfer target but chasing Duffy for example smacks of a big populist decision that we need a big lad to counter SPFL level big lads or we need a leader to help him with these frenchies revolting. We really don’t (see those stats from CBN). We need a balanced left footed CH to help us play 3 at the back.
There is going to be one helluva fallout when Duffy, lost for pace in our systrem as the last man at the back, hauls back the forward and gets a red card. Again and again.

How many shots off the post/crossbar? There was one the other night. Again, if it had gone in the world would be a different place.
But this is all being played out against a background of a long term trend of regression, which I suspect stems from The Great Desmondo having shelved the project, his hope of a move to the EPL with the huge return on his investment that would accrue not having come to pass.
There is no vision, and the Club is suffering as a result.

No. That’s my point. How do we create ‘better’ chances with a better rate of success. We lower the risk with longer range shots. Ryan (who has many redeeming features I love in him) makes poor decisions too often. Who is helping to coach that out of him?
BIG WAVY on 28TH AUGUST 2020 12:24 PM
I’ve said it before but the key to Celtic scoring more goals, particularly in domestic games with teams parking the bus lies with corner kicks.
It’s not exactly rocket salad either. Kick the ball into the danger zone onto someone’s head. How hard can that be?

Me, me, me…..sir. I know this one :)

Had a LOL moment there when I saw your team selection, I thought you were proposing yourself “moi” to play behind French Eddy and Ajeti! Then I realised you were talking about Elyounnossi and not yourself, although after Wednesday’s debacle you might be on to something…….

Please don’t get me started on corners. I joke with my son now when we get a corner that we just do soemthing else than watch it. Either overhit or underhit but bless him Ryan still perseveres.
We have 2 good corner takers – Griff and Moi.
Can’t believe people are still on the JF bus?
Surely Wednesday night must have put that particular bus off the road.
He was one of the main reason’s for that horror show.
Along with RC playing the Hollywood ball at every opportunity.
Plus CMcG hiding for the odd 15 minutes.

I think Callum is stifled by our system. Where is the marauding, connecting, perpetual motion that we know he is?
We have talented players galore, as shown by some periods on Wednesday. We have a playground like tactics and formation and that lies with the coaching staff.
I’m loathe to blame players necessarily. Get them playing to their strengths.
Big Wavy
I get your ….. lack of faith (let’s say) in Etims, tbf it wasn’t etims responding, however, it did point to that all this analysis and lack of its use isn’t having a detrimental impact on trophies, including topping our Europa league group, if only there was some analysis on the “brain farts” in team selection.
It’s fair to say we can do a lot of things better, to highlight the chances versus conversion in the past 3 games I think it was 66 chances created
Here’s hoping we can redress that trend on Sunday
The Huns, with clearly weaker talent, have a better system than ours as a consequence.
They play with 2 DMs in front of a back 4. No suprise they haven’t conceded a goal in Scotland.
This year might be a challenge of us with all the talent a poor system versus their lack of talent but a system that works.
I’d say we’ve reduced the odds to 50:50 now.
Again some real talking points.Jobos player ratings.El Hamed makes a mistake, well two,he should have brought him down, apart from that,I thought he did very well.He got 1 vote.
Christie, who had an appalling miss from 2 yards, trying to backheel, what was a side foot certain goal, misplaced passes regularly, indeed, one of his passes set them on the road for the winner, yet received 15 putting him second.
Taylor, played very solidly,in spite of his detractors on here, and put through the pass of the night, for the goal chalked off.5 points Anyone ever watch football games and see the same things as others watching.?
Go Tell the Spartim,
Thanks fella. I’m a believer in data but you’re right, there’s more to it. Fraser Forster’s Hampden show was talent versus data that showed we should have lost. Data showed Brown and Moi had bad games but actually it was injury that resulted in that. etc etc.
The data is useless if not acted upon and our better talent has the ability to buck a game and skew the narrative (as Ernie rightly points out) but the risk catches up with you in the end. The data should show the patterns that result in creating our best chances, defendign our goal and they have great ability to counter our bias (our biggest ones being the imprtance of a very vocal Broonie and the criticism of an Ntcham being lazy or a Forrest diappearing). That’s where they come into their own as we all see the game in differnet ways.
I think we are missing the trick by being dismissive about data too much. It’s an area we must bridge if we want to move forwrad.

That’s bias in action fella. The Jobo competition will be a prime example of that all season.
One guy who seems to be escaping any criticism,is one of my heros. If that wee Arse Griff had done what he should have, came back fit, played on Wednesday night,we win that game.
Why don’t we have a PPV deal for non-season tocket holders for Sunday?
Seems strange.
Lots of posters venting much as Neil did on Wednesday. Totally understandable.
But…. Calm down a little. We blew it on Wednesday and Neil should really take a look at himself in light of the now numerous examples of how we have exited European completions over the past 3 years. On all occasions we have had the advantage before kick off either because of the first leg score and/or home advantage. This inability to manage the team tactics to suit is ridiculous. I’m beginning to think we’d do better if we didn’t hold the advantage going into these games.
The failure to devise a safe holding formation but still with a forward threat is bloody frustrating.
The negativity towards JF I understand. I find him a really frustrating player but it is amazing how many times he assists goals and indeed scores. I usually only notice this in one of the season end compilations and am regularly amazed at his contributions which were not recognised by meat the time. A very modern effective footballer.
JF is good newsCSC
Onwards and upwards CSC
BIG WAVY,
Not bias at all,Christies appalling miss probably cost us the game.Did not have a good game either,so why voted by people on here into second place.Just WTF were they watching. My point was ,does anyone watching games see the same as others. You see a totally different game from me.
QUADROPHENIAN on 28TH AUGUST 2020 12:06 PM
It’s a tactics, structure and organisational problem. We a reliant on players producing magic whether it was Eddy at one end or FF at the other.
Its part of the reason that things fall apart when big players don’t shine; we are not sum of our parts.
But look at the management team- its weak relative to the quality of players. Our top players are relatively miles ahead of where Lenny is as a manager.
Lenny has been a magnificent servant but is not a great manager. Between Lenny, JK and Strachan, its a poor offering; what level would they be at but for Celtic? Hibs or in Strachan’s case, English League 1.
Pedro wanted a cheap, pliable (relatively) option and be got it.
Meat = me at (FFS)!
BIG WAVY,
Too expensive.Would need to charge same as ST holders.
BIG WAVY
They would need to charge the equivalent of a ST divided by say 20.
Might be over £30 per game.
How many would pay that?
Turkeybhoy,
It IS bias. We all have it as part of our DNA fella. Nothing to be ashamed of. People see and appreciate the motion, all action, involvement of RC and give him a vote, regardless of going deeper. People, giving up on Greg Taylor see only the bad (and I was guilty of forgetting his ball to Moi for the disallowed goal. It was a belter).
Bias just IS. Not much we can do about it beyind recognising it in us.
The question you have to ask is if Lennon walked or got sacked, realistically who would actually want him and how successful would he be?
We all know the answer to that one..

Get a few of the family in or a couple of mates and the cost gets split. Some people who can, might treat themselves to it as a one-off instead of going to the pub.
Seems a loss leader by not even trying.
ROLLING_STONE 1.03: ‘It’s a tactics, structure and organisational problem.’ Bang on.
I’ve just watched the 1st half again. This mob were no Bayern. Wouldn’t swap (m)any of them for our guys.
Darren ODea says they’d changed their predicted formation and their surge was sure giving us issues.
Our men played neat, slick, organic stuff in the mid 2/3rds of the park. But didnt punish near the goalmouth.
Back to 2nd half…
LAZYDYNAMITE on 28TH AUGUST 2020 10:36 AM
I for one am now fully behind the manager for this season anyway…we need to pull together and stop giving the opposition a laugh
………………………..
So we shouldn’t criticise, just suck it up. Should we not have acceptable standards? Perhaps it’s the club who are giving the opposition a laugh by accepting serial failure in Europe against beatable opposition on our own turf.
Quadrophenian,
Darren O’Dea gave me the only laugh out loud moment on Wednesday when 1 minute into injury time, he said that “Celtic just need to be patient here”…..
Dearie me….
Gordon Strachan was an a very fine Celtic manager. Some excellent European performances. Especially noteworthy following Mon and a lesser budget
O.K Don’t think i’m getting a definitive answer from all you
Celtic family members, and i know you all care.
But Lenny for the ten or not.

___
Jucojames’ twisting of the Kieran Tierney tale left a bad taste in the mouth for me. As somebody who watched the whole Tierney interview and knew fine well what was said it was a deliberate misrepresentation.
So pleased to see the lad turnbull brought in ,although going by our history it will likely be November before we see him . Good as it is that a piece of quality has been added , why no urgency regards that defence of ours , as it stands we are worse off than we were last season , with the loss of FF . Some major investment is needed in our defensive set up , elhammed made a mistake on Wednesday but imho he is the best of a bad lot , improvement needed at LB and major major surgery needed at Ch . If ajer wants away let him go , we should surely demand a decent fee for him . Although I am beginning to wonder who IS the best of the two twin towers . There must be a quality hard as nails CH out there who will come to us . This Duffy nonsense has gone on too long now . Unfortunately time is catching up with our captain , what a player this guy has been for us , where do we find a heart of a lion midfielder to replace him . It leaves us with no enforcer in the team ,which is a necessity in these times . N Lennon made some strange choices on Wednesday , poor tactics , The problem I have with Neil is he has his must play players ,even if we get nothing from them they are undroppable , not going to mention names we all know . We also have players who spend more time on the treatment table than on the park , again we all know who these guys are , if not playing no good to us , using up wages we could use elsewhere . Seems the club are on a downer at the moment , but we are celtic ,the cream will rise to the top .
BW @ 12.41
Agree that we are streets ahead of the SPL when it comes to talent.
Just a case that we are lower table when it comes to coaching / conditioning / tactics + set up.
For the record I really rate JF — more complete talent that AMcG for example / better finisher.
Just a case that he is phoning it in at the moment — no spark / drive / determination.
Wee boy lost in a man’s world.
I think CMcG is a squad player at the moment — slow developer so there is time.
I think he needs to work on the defensive side of his game / improve his tackling for example.
I do rate RC — he is dynamic / scores goals / can pick a pass.
However he has a wee bit of growing up to do — more drive / determination — so has a bit to go.
Playing a Hollywood game at the moment when Eastenders would do — pot shots are the easy way out.
I think he is thinking about the EPL two years too early..
ON is our best player / most complete MF by a country mile — Champion the wonderpass vs Anderlecht.
Unfortunately he can be a wee bit sloppy at times and plays his best when he has an audience.
My view would be to build the team around him but he has stagnated with us over the past year.
SB needs a dignified exit — I fear the opposition will have a go at him at every opportunity.
New Bloke — has a game at a very early age so the basics are there.
TR — what could have been / interested if his fragility is handled better at his next club.
Soro — Agent friendly signing who is being forgotten about?
Reserves — who would be the guy to step up?
