Duran is the right level of risk for Celtic

231

Camilo Duran (24) joined the campaign for six-in-a-row this morning and is the most welcome news Celtic have had since the epochal events of May. It has been eight weeks since he played, but he is young and does not look to be carrying much in the way of excess timber, so the three-week run up to our opening fixture of the campaign should be enough to get ready.

Champions League goals last term against Benfica, Ajax, Eintracht and Newcastle raised his profile. By contrast, he scored in only six Azerbaijani league games (10 goals in total), as Qarabag lost only their second title in 13 years.

Every transfer is a risk and this looks like the right level of risk for Celtic. We are never going to acquire a player who has consistently established his credentials, we need to select from a small sample of positive signs. The player has shown what he can achieve at the top level, it is now up to the club to develop him.

Welcome to Celtic, Camilo.

Devlin now signed for the huns too. Fantastic news. Recreating Hertz seems to be the plan there.

If the transfer window carries on in a similar vein, our two main “competitors” could have saved themselves a lot of money by simply swapping shirts for next season! As it is, the 3rd best team in the country is trying to improve its status to 2nd best by signing a bunch of bottlers who can’t perform when the pressure is really on.

  2. If there is any truth in the media reports about the players that Celtic are supposedly trying to sign, our squad is going to be extremely threadbare when the AFCON next takes place! And I certainly hope that whoever is doing the deals at Celtic is taking international commitments into account when considering potential signings.

Auldheid, thank you for the update.

I’m about to come across as pedantic, which is not meant to demean your efforts to explain FSR rules. I hope you will take what I’m about to say in the spirit it’s intended.

First, you and a few others will confuse people by referring to revenue (simplistically match day income + merch sales+media) as “income”. Income is what’s left over e.g. a simplistic P&L: Revenue-Operating Expenses= Operating Profit – Interest Expense – Tax = NET INCOME.

Second, the huns raising £16m of equity does not impact the P&L: it will show up on the balance sheet (all else equal £16m of cash on the asset side and £16m of equity added to liabilities) and the cash flow statement (the most important of the three financial statements 😉) under ‘cash flow from financing activities’.

If the huns felt it necessary to issue equity in order to comply with FSR, I can only guess (because I’m not prepared to wade through FSR rules) that the rules stipulate not only a what proportion of REVENUE can be spent on players, but also a minimum level of balance sheet strength (debt/equity, debt/total assets) or some other metric (Net debt/EBITDA etc).

Without sight of their accounts, the only way an equity raise impacts the P&L in the short term would be to use the proceeds to pay down debt and reduce the interest expense.

Longer term, it could be invested in REVENUE generating assets/opportunities that allow them to grow REVENUE (expand the stadium, grow merch sales or media) , which gives them more to spend on players.

My best guess is they need the equity to shore up the balance sheet.

  7. If Huns get the Red Star boy, they will have a formidable team already for next season while some smirk at them, and sit on our asses doing nothing as usual.Shit scared go spend before we sell.

Of course, start to panic when its too late.

    =============

My audience was not for some with accountancy experience and I deliberately avoided being technical in quoting FSR rules as the kind of detail you have gone into tends to stop folk reading.

My main point was that the cash the share issue generates can be used for a number of reasons not directly related to football earnings but can pay for transfers.

However the rules regarding Squad Cost Ratio still take precedence when it comes to limiting what all clubs applying for a UEFA licence can spend.

By “income” I meant income from football earnings as defined by UEFA.

I think you are right that the share issue was more about having a positive balance sheet but the ability to use some of the cash generated to pay for transfers was a wrinkle in the FSR scenario that was new to me and if they do that and raise what they spend on players, Celtic have to consider their response which in the past has been to spend not much more on players than Rangers.

Here is what UEFA say about Equity and perhaps the reason Rangers had a share issue can be discerned from that? It is all grist to the same mill of understanding FSR.

    Article 70 Net equity rule

    70.01

The licence applicant must report in its annual financial statements or interim financial statements (whichever close as at the 31 December preceding the deadline for submission of the application to the licensor and preceding the deadline for submission of the list of licensing decisions to UEFA) a net equity position which:

    is positive; or

has improved by 10% or more since the previous 31 December.

    70.02

Net equity means the residual interest in the assets of the entity after deducting all its liabilities as set out in its annual financial statements or interim financial statements as applicable. If a licence applicant’s assets exceed its liabilities, then the licence applicant has a net asset position, i.e. positive equity. If a licence applicant’s liabilities exceed its assets, then the licence applicant has a net liability position, i.e. negative equity.

    70.03

If a licence applicant does not comply with Paragraph 70.01 as at 31 December, the licence applicant can submit a new audited balance sheet by 31 March at the latest in order to demonstrate that one of the conditions in Paragraph 70.01(a) or (b) has since been fulfilled.

    70.04

For the purpose of compliance with this criterion, equity can include subordinated loans that are, for at least the following 12 months, subordinated to all other liabilities and non-interest-bearing.

    70.05

The licensor’s assessment must be in accordance with Annex I.

    70.06

Exceptionally, a licence applicant can request an alternative assessment date if:

it has an annual accounting reference date of 31 May, in which case it may prepare interim financial statements for a six-month period ending 30 November and use such interim financial statements for the purposes of the net equity rule; or

it has an annual accounting reference date of 30 November, in which case its annual financial statements for the reporting period ending 30 November may be used for the purposes of the net equity rule.

In such exceptional cases a) or b), all references to 31 December in the net equity rule should be understood as 30 November.

I went into the impact of Rangers raising £16m in this article which was posted on CQN the day before the one under discussion.

It was in response to a question on CQN about what it meant that I sought to answer.

In doing so the need for a general explanation of FSR arose hence the sequence of comments.

  24. Good Morning Celts – Grand Day To Be A Tim…

    BSR @ 10:26 am,

Yes, excellent salient points as per…

All this review, new staff posts, learning lessons, to me, it’s all just knee jerk reactions to various outcomes and events, designed to misdirect – excuses and the blame game being the order of the day.

The PLC have certain revenue streams they covet – set up by their predecessors in the 20th Century.

Taking what they can monetise from the support and maximising the profits while minimising any risk is what they do.

There is no recruitment “budget” in the conventional sense and any funds allocated are certainly not controlled by the HofF, manager, nor any other “football man”.

That being the case, it currently really comes down to one thing – how much this current manager’s gravitas can pull into the Lennoxtown set up to maximise the first team squad and support activities for this season.

The proof of the pudding will be…

    Who we sign

    Who we sell

    The Lennoxton staff

The Ox being retained on what would be a decent wage, Camilo Duran a decent prospect, re-signinging Kelechi on a bumper wage, signing Scarrachi – would suggest the manager has got his way.

Refusing to sell Arne in January, no HVPs sold yet, suggests the “fire sale” we’ve witnessed since January ’23 may have come to an end.

Staff at Lennoxtown are obviously being hired on a short term basis, yet for me, it is aimed at retaining the best of last seasons performances domestically and in Europe – it should be enough for a decent season.

MO’N seems to have “got his way” to a limited extent, as is determined to shield the Board and unify the disparate club as best he can.

What the Board do with the resbite; time and space Martin has and wil be giving them really points to an existential period for our great club.

They have the resources to make Celtic a great football club again – do they have the will!?

Whatever way that pans out, we have a one off unique season ahead, where we could manage to do some very interesting stuff imo…

    In MO’N&Co we trust…

    Hail Hail
