Camilo Duran (24) joined the campaign for six-in-a-row this morning and is the most welcome news Celtic have had since the epochal events of May. It has been eight weeks since he played, but he is young and does not look to be carrying much in the way of excess timber, so the three-week run up to our opening fixture of the campaign should be enough to get ready.
Champions League goals last term against Benfica, Ajax, Eintracht and Newcastle raised his profile. By contrast, he scored in only six Azerbaijani league games (10 goals in total), as Qarabag lost only their second title in 13 years.
Every transfer is a risk and this looks like the right level of risk for Celtic. We are never going to acquire a player who has consistently established his credentials, we need to select from a small sample of positive signs. The player has shown what he can achieve at the top level, it is now up to the club to develop him.

Interestingly, while keeping an eye on the Scottish open, Scotland have played in 8 of the 23 world cups so far. 5 of those times Brazil have shared a group with Scotland and on all 5 occasions have failed to win the trophy! And yet the have won the trophy on 5 other occasions! 1958 in Sweden is the only time Brazil took home the cup when Scotland also graced the world stage. ( Brazil’s first ever World Cup win btw )

hearts scored 20 odd goals from set pieces last season. Celtic not near the top of table in that regard – new set piece coach cant make players taller or better headers of the ball. we need talent added in that department. O’neil tradition team consists of height – I expect/hope for 6’4 + keeper and a 6’4 + central defender.
we are miserable and miserly when it comes to transfers and its cost us 50-80m in champs league money over the last few seasons. At some stage it will affect domestic matters and I’m not getting a good feeling about this season yet – the board are dithering again and that tells be they haven’t listened and dont g.a.f about what the fans think.

In the situations where the club has not spent the full amount of the SCR – what did the Club spend THAT money on?
It would would have been something more than improving our ability to qualify for the Champions League, most fans would think.

Ever since I ploughed my way through FSR stuff I thought this is a game changer for all clubs and their supporters.
For the first time supporters should be able to establish to a reasonable degree of accuracy how much Celtic are able to spend sustainably as well as Rangers.
Before FSR it was a biscuit tin of unknown size with no limits on ambitious expectations that had little idea of how much there is to spend.
Celtic will not like the transparency because comparisons will be made with what Rangers spend on playing squad and Celtic will need to spend more on wages or justify why not.
As soon as both publish their latest audited account AI will be able to churn out a reasonable estimate about the playing squad ceiling for both and those calculations will be the source of more informed discussion than has been incapable of having in the past and easily dismissed with responses like every penny is spent on players.
That will no longer be good enough if it can be shown it is not true and that might persuade Celtic this is an area that requires them to be more transparent than they had to be pre FSR.
Additionally the functionality exists to put questions to the Board by individual shareholders or groups of them at any time before an AGM is announced .
That functionality was introduced in 2022 so did not exist in 2013 when Res12 was supported by a group of shareholders but had to wait until the AGM was announced before the Resolution could be delivered by hand along with copies signed by shareholders.
Perhaps another guide to seeking answers from the Board using that functionality is needed especially as it would lead to better communications if used in large number.

McGregor has been consistently linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and hinted in April that if the Parkhead club did not match his ambition, he could depart.
“Sometimes those things get lost in translation a little bit,” O’Neill said.
“I don’t think he meant it as bad as that. I know I used to do that myself as a player – ‘Had the club matched my ambition?’, and then I found out I wasn’t in the team. That’s what Brian Clough used to do.
“I haven’t had a conversation with him. I will do during the course of pre-season, see how he’s fixed. He was terrific for us, absolutely terrific.
“He’s been a really good captain anyway, but last season, right from the start, from the first time that I came in in late October, until right to the end of the season with the second spell, I thought he was brilliant.
“He is really important to us in many aspects because he knows the football club. It’s a bit like Paul Lambert, Neil Lennon, people like this.
“Sometimes when you bring in young lads who, like even the Colombian [new signing Camilo Duran], maybe they’ve heard of Celtic but not really know what [it’s about]. I think that’s all you need is half an hour with Callum to let them know.”
McGregor recently changed to Unique Sports Group – the same agency that represents former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, who is currently in charge of Saudi Pro League outfit Al Qadsiah.
“Apparently so,” O’Neill said, when pressed on McGregor’s switch.
“He hasn’t hinted to me he wants to leave at this minute. That would be a bad blow. But sometimes money is a big thing, particularly when you’re past 30.
“I will have a chat with him. He hasn’t brought it up at this moment, so maybe if he doesn’t speak to me, it’ll be all right.
“But if he does, I will tell him that we want him at the football club. But obviously if something comes in that is just mind-boggling for him, that becomes a different issue.”

This will not be a popular opinion but Callum is way past his best. It’s been a long time since he was the beating heart. No disrespect for him to seek a final payday while he still has the skill and energy for the riches of the kingdom of Saud. The idea that he would stay on if Celtic just did something is in my humble opinion just wishful.
Personally I think we needed to find a new Calmac last season maybe even the one before. He’s up there on the pedestal but no irreplaceable at his age.
Yes the quality new signings procession is a bit slow. The biggest deals will be completed closer the the bell, which makes CL progression that much harder. A few prospects agents will be making that urgency play to get optimum deals for their clients.
If you are looking for quantity signing Sevco or hurts of midloathing are the team.

Replacing Cal will be a big task; can you mould a McCowan into a MacGregor? Or do you need to buy an oven-ready option ? Like you I would not begrudge him some seasons in Saudi; he’s an exemplary pro who deserves rich rewards. Perhaps his departure would shake the suits out of this seeming lethargy; tho mibby not.
IMO, we’re not prepping for ECL progression – we are rightsizing to Europa levels.
Happy to be proven a numpty by a better-than-Bayern Champs League run under (hopefully) Martin the Magician.

It looks like we are stuck with him indeed – running the famous Glasgow Celtic like a private corporation.
For me the worst aspect is he seems to put his oar in on a whim…
When you add in the non-extant football strategy and the infamous, mythical recruitment model, then predicting the direction of movement at Celtic FC is next to impossible.
To that extent, having a manager, even a temporary one, who can make and action decisions at the club is clearly an improvement, albeit a short term one.
When Ange was here I made this point regarding our ambitions in Europe, we needed 10 mn + players…
Now, that didn’t mean we had to buy players at that price, we needed to play players at that worth…
E.g. Replacing Joe Hart with a keeper of that calibre 10 mn, Calmac was a 10 mn + player but he came from the academy, Matt O’Riley was a 10 mn + player but we got him through knowing his back story (like Nygren), CCV, Jota 10 mn + players we got on relatively high loann to buy deals, Hatate, Kyogo, Maeda (WBC;) the managers little black book, Liel Abada, a moneyball prospect who was heading towards that value, Mooy, a free that was as effective as a 10 mn player… and so on, you get the picture!?
So it was interesting when BR&Co stated the 2023/24 season with hearlded European ambitions and a squad weaker than we had in 2022.
We had guarateed UCL participation in 23/24, 24/25, if we won the league and a new UCL format from 24/25 that gave clubs like Celtic a great chance to compete in the UCL group stage, albeit a realistic goal of reaching “top 24”.
Why would a football club like Celtic not be taking that serious, a real chance to make Celtic a fixture in the new format UCL – £40 mn + “extra” football income each season.
You dangle that carrot in front of our Board and the stubborn mule doesn’t only not move forward, it starts walking backward…
So, who can predict what they will do during MO’N’s respite? Cease the day – does not seem to fit the culture.
Yet, MO’N is nobody’s fool and it is all about the “winning”, so expect the team to have some edge about it.
Sporting Lisbon will be interesting, ’cause Celtic don’t play friendlies… and we’ll see where we are…
