CELTIC’s potential windfall from a transfer for Virgil Van Dijk in January have taken a twist after the Dutch colossus claimed he was ‘happy’ at Southampton.
The classy 26-year-old was the subject of much interest from Liverpool but despite a transfer request, Southampton held firm in retaining Van Dijk.
However, the Dutch internationalist, refused to be drawn into speculation about his future when speaking yesterday ahead of the Netherlsnds friendly at Pittodrie against Scotland in the battle of the World Cup flops.
“Firstly, I don’t think it’s appropriate to comment on anything that happened before,” big Virgil said.
‘But I am giving 100 per cent for the club. I work hard every day, I help my team-mates, I’m positive and I want to win every game.
“I am happy and that’s the most important thing so we will just see what happens.”
Jürgen Klopp’s side will be hoping that Van Dijk’s inability to confirm that he still saw his future at the Saints is a sign that he is still open to a move to Merseyside.
Any potential move would benefit Celtic as upon the sale to Southampton in 2015, the club placed a sell-on fee, which would be a given percentage of the few that Van Dijk would move on for. This has been estimated at around £9 million with certain fees being thrown around for Van Dijk.
