Dutch travel sickness

757

Can we purge all negative overtones today, make sure we start tomorrow with a clean sheet?  Injuries and suspensions are part of the game, we accept them and plan how to win important games.

Celtic are at their best when they are up against it, when everyone knows that nothing short of a herculean effort is required.  This is the case tomorrow.  The requirement is straightforward enough: win your personal battle, inhibit one of the best teams we will play this season, take control of midfield and find spaces in the Ajax defence to exploit.

We have more than enough players bursting to set about this task.

Ajax had a taxing game on Saturday, scoring late to secure a draw away to top of the table Twente.  Although fourth, they are one of six teams no more than two points off the pace in what is currently one of Europe’s tightest leagues, but there is a fragility about Ajax.

The game against Twente was their first away match after a run of four home games, three of which were won comfortably, while they were denied a win against Milan by a ridiculous penalty in added time.  Their away form, however, has been less than impressive; they are still waiting for their first win away from the Amsterdam ArenA this season.  As a result, they travel to Celtic Park with the same trepidation they travelled to Groningen, Heerenveen, Twente, AZ, Barca and PSV, a series of games which returned three draws and three defeats.

Dutch media have also been reminding them of a quirky record to maintain.  While Celtic eliminated Ajax the last twice the teams met in European Cup/Champions League duty, the Dutch avoided defeat on both games at Celtic Park.  For us, this is a meaningless fact, but it is an added burden of expectation on Ajax.

    Thanks, appreciated!

Been strange reading but not adding. It has been rather angrier than previously I think but then again its good folk are passionate. Shame it can spill into intolerance though.

But looking forward to making my small contribution again.

Anyone know a Celtic friendly pub in Forfar where I can watch Saturday’s game (assuming its on telly)?

    ……………………………….

just checked with family from the Toon ….if it is on BT go to The Strathmore Bar …if on Sky The Osnaburg……but you shouldn,t have any bother in Forfar …

  4. Off to the nest, early flight in the morn. Can’t beat the sense of anticipation before a big match in paradise, especially when you have the pleasure of attending. My premiership supporting mates used to rib me saying it’s all about the drinking, the rebel songs, etc, etc. They just couldn’t figure out the attraction. Suffice to say once a couple of them made it to a big match they quickly saw what being a Celtic supporter means and how it can explode the levels of joy in a man’s life.

It’s a grand old team to see indeed.

What a special post. Enjoy the game however it ends.

For me every CL game at CP is a wonderful footballing experience. We’re mixing with the best. Nobody can take that away.

  6. The Dutch are confident of a good result tomorrow night – I’ve never known a Dutchman that was anything but super confident. Despite some of the comments on here Celtic are doing nicely at present and if the officials did their job properly we would now have a six point lead in the Championship. Our main problem at the moment is the injury crisis and Scott Brown’s anger management.

We are probably underdogs going into tomorow night’s match which will suit us just fine and we still have the players to do the business. Very impressed with young Fisher on Saturday, he is one tough cookie and was well able to mix it with the Hibs. Played well against Liverpool in the Dublin Decider like a lot of our young players in that game.

Enjoy , there is nothing quite like it:)).

The Latest lasting European game memory I have(talking of exploding) is sharing the moment with my daughter when wee Jamsies stuck the 3rd goal in against Karagandy .

The explosion of noise was such that it seemed to go silent and time seemed to revert to slow motion, the thing is I know that will make sense to many on here but to those that have not experienced a Euro night at celtic park it probably wont.

    Till later all

enjoy the game no matter where you are

re the count the crowd debate

I remember a snowy Boxing Day at Kilbowie Park – think the Bankies were playing Stranraer and it might have been 1968 – when there was 22 of a crowd.

Not only did I know who they all were but I was related to 16 of them.

  12. Scotland Today (Edinburgh edition STV+1). On the week of an important champions League game for our Scottish Representatives :

Neil Lennon – Champions League press conference only shows a question asked about controversial twitter comment from hibs player about “Lennon”…. “the Northern Irish man”. It then goes to the trouble of finding the exact clip from years ago where shearer kicks Neil Lennon in the head not once but twice just in case you missed it first time. Lets show a little violence against NL instead of concentrating on this important match.

De Boer – “The ex Rangers player” Given full 2 minutes about his teams strategy on how to defeat or draw with Celtic.

Who was the home team manager? I got the feeling from that I should be supporting Ajax…..hun believable !

What was this site like when we were doing badly? It’s pretty depressing at these best of times now.

Knocked out of a couple of Scottish cups,a couple of League cups,by diddies.

Lost 3 big players from last season, only replaced one.

No recognized striker at the club.

We are going into the Ajax game minus(last season included)Wanyama,Hooper,Brown,Ledley,Mathews,Commons,Wilson, maybe Lustig, nearly the full team who did us proud last year.

We are in this position, for the simple reason, apart from VVD,we did not buy well in the summer.Being able to play the new signings would have helped the injury list a great deal.

You want more depression?.I could go on but I wont.

You’re allowed 25 players on the A list but you need to have 8 ‘locally’ trained players, of which 4 are ‘club’ trained players. We only have 20 players on the A list (we don’t have enough players that have come through the youth system in this country to make up 25 players) with the B list bhoys making up the ‘locally’ & ‘club’ trained players requirements.

If we start with our best back five I’ll be confident of getting a clean sheet. We score, we win, we do not need the three we needed against Karagandy. If Lustig does not play Darnell needs to start with support from Ambrose, Forrest and Kayal. Would settle for a 1-0 right now, and for Scott Brown’s ban to be reduced. When you see what Hibs, and Gareth Barry for that matter got away over the weekend well…let’s not go there.

Thanks, I surely will, been to many a big night at Paradise, just not as many recently as I would like due to family commitments and this damn recession!

I know exactly what you mean leftclicktic. When Henrik rose for the 1st equaliser in Seville, I remember time standing still, an explosion of noise, a buzzing in my ears, and a fan next to me picking me off the floor. I’d passed out, excitement got the better of me ( a combination of Seville heat and copious jugs of red wine were a factor too)
