Dutch travel sickness

757

Can we purge all negative overtones today, make sure we start tomorrow with a clean sheet?  Injuries and suspensions are part of the game, we accept them and plan how to win important games.

Celtic are at their best when they are up against it, when everyone knows that nothing short of a herculean effort is required.  This is the case tomorrow.  The requirement is straightforward enough: win your personal battle, inhibit one of the best teams we will play this season, take control of midfield and find spaces in the Ajax defence to exploit.

We have more than enough players bursting to set about this task.

Ajax had a taxing game on Saturday, scoring late to secure a draw away to top of the table Twente.  Although fourth, they are one of six teams no more than two points off the pace in what is currently one of Europe’s tightest leagues, but there is a fragility about Ajax.

The game against Twente was their first away match after a run of four home games, three of which were won comfortably, while they were denied a win against Milan by a ridiculous penalty in added time.  Their away form, however, has been less than impressive; they are still waiting for their first win away from the Amsterdam ArenA this season.  As a result, they travel to Celtic Park with the same trepidation they travelled to Groningen, Heerenveen, Twente, AZ, Barca and PSV, a series of games which returned three draws and three defeats.

Dutch media have also been reminding them of a quirky record to maintain.  While Celtic eliminated Ajax the last twice the teams met in European Cup/Champions League duty, the Dutch avoided defeat on both games at Celtic Park.  For us, this is a meaningless fact, but it is an added burden of expectation on Ajax.

Can’t wait until tomorrow nights walk on, me and my 9 year old bhoy holding his first Celtic scarf I bought him with all his badges attached and collected from his first game at paradise 3 years ago!

We will wear our Kano teeshirts with pride, the wee man does his best for the Kano foundation… Always asking what else he can do to help out ! Proud of you son.

I’m sure I’ll need a hanky for the tears or even discreetly use his scarf as the magical moment of walk on is being sung approaches !

Only started posting last week, but I’m getting the bug Sannabhoy !

The wee man will have a memory for life. I remember my first Euro night vividly. 39 years ago A Madrid. Hope he gets a win to remember :)

  6. I would like to tell you all my formation for tomorrow but due to our injuries and my lack of insight of how Ajax key players form their strength. I will leave it it all up to Neil.

Going by things I’ve seen, they will play a 4-2-3-1

We must compete in the central area is key for both sides.

But what I really want to see is Kayal get his swagger back. The boy can play but he’s became far to shy since his injury and form of brown has not helped him.

So get behind him from the off.

That’s about the most utterly pointless post I’ve ever posted but I hope you get my point

  8. The tension in the run up to a Euro night at CP is such that I can almost taste it. It’s certainly enough to give me trouble sleeping.

My first was v Dnamo Kiev in the Spring of 1966. We won 3-0. A repeat of that is, I think, beyond us and so I’m going for a 2-1 win tonight. Mulgrew and Forrest to score. HH

  11. Dutch players at CP I remember fondly

    I can’t think of many.

Wim Jansen deserves a mention. He was Dutch and he stopped 10 in a row.

Bobby Petta if for nothing else his tormenting of Ricksen in the 6-2 game.

Pierre van Hooidjonk for his goals

Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink for his goals and in particular the last minute winner that won the league.

Evander Sno such unfulfilled promise. He could have been our first Wanyama.

Re a pub in Elgin to watch the game. Think it was whitedoghunch who asked.

The Ionic at the east end of the high st across from the court house is where the local CSC meets. As I am a shy and retiring type who doesn’t venture into rough drinking establishments very often, or maybe cause every time I’ve been in I’m so tired an emotional I didnae actually notice if they have a telly, I don’t go there much. Accross the road and up a wee bit is the Muckle Cross a witherspoons job with cheap beer (so I’m told) is Ok but mixed. The Crown, mentioned by Sunni Camlachie shut doon about 20 years ago so I’ve no idea how he went there 4 years ago. There is a place called the Cooperage, up at the west end opposite the RBS which would be OK but very coprporate and the Thunderton also OK. Avoid the White Horse. Good on a Saturday night but I had to leave at half time watching the Seville game due to the bar staff’s disdain for our heroes. You would be welcome at my house but, I’ll be at Parkhead and my Skyisalandfill jnr would probably be turning over to watch feckin Barca every five minutes.

Incidentally. Living wage for all who work at CP. I am lucky enough to have a wage which is some way in advance and can’t understand how anyone can get by on less than £10 an hour. Disgraceful if the board don’t support this. Sleep time. Train to Glasgow and drinks with the Grey Brigade beckon.

You can’t smoke, and you can’t drink.

If you can do that, then you can do that.

But then if you can do that, then you can do a whole lot more.

  22. My first Euro game was Celtic 2-2 Valencia in the Fairs Cup in 1963. The Spaniards had a 4-2 lead from the first leg. I was in the front of the old enclosure and I remember goalkeeper John Fallon pulling off a string of great saves to keep us in the game. Following season I saw my first Euro victory, a 3-0 (agg 4-1) win over Leoxiesg of Portugal. Barcelona knocked us out in the second round.

  23. Tom

I don’t recall that game, I was a little too young ( born 58) . One game that sticks in my mind a little, and perhaps you could fill in the blanks for me, was a European cup game v Basle some years later. I think it may have been my first and I think I must have been about 12, so perhaps 1970 ish. The little bits I can remember are, I think….and you’re probably gonna correct me on most of this, was, an early goal for us, we won, 2 or 3 nil? Harry Hood, Willie Wallace.floodlights.
