Dysfunctional Amsterdam

770

Three weeks ago there was little argument against the observation that Ajax had the worst European travelling support we have seen at Celtic Park – half a century of history.  Attacks on Celtic fans by a roaming gang on Tuesday night was not a surprise.  The banner, which Uefa are trying to ignore, but will surely be shamed into doing something about, was offensive and, in most jurisdictions, a criminal offense.

When the police collaborate it’s hard not to verge into the realms of branding a society “dysfunctional”.  Amsterdam is wealthy, affluent, liberal but intolerant, badly policed and violent.  The visit of Celtic fans passed with less incident (and arrest of visitors) than most visiting fans endured in recent seasons.

Visit Bruges instead.

  1. Morning all. Very wet, cold and windy down here once more. What’s it like up North? Is the team travelling up this morning. That cannot be good, if we’ve a lunchtime kick-off. Hope to see a few of the younger lhads get a game.

  2. Alasdair MacLean on

Weather in Dingwall for the game going to be fine and dry – if cold. (4 deg)

Expect the pitch tyo be in very good nick – possibly just a little on the soft side because of the recent damp weather with no “drying.”

  3. Lennybhoy & macjay1,

My wee Mammy finished her doses of radium yesterday. She was tired after every bout and she was delighted it was over and done with, she also says she isnae suffering from any of the side effects she was told about, apart from extreme tiredness.

I really appreciate your comments and others also.

Elsewhere I see its another deed teams derby – notRangers v notAirdrie. Plenty of zombies on show for that one …

  5. All this Summers signings should come good.

I think Teemu will be sensational, if he is loved.

I was mad putin so much money on Celtic winning the CL this season, Lisbon though, it ain’t over yet.

We WILL win the CL just like Arsenal Will win the Premiership despite the Money MONSTERS.

As someone who was in Lourdes last year, as one of the sick, and who accompanied by my auld Dad, can I simply say that I have never been in a place where young people in particular are so conspicuous by their care for others and have a great time doing it. I think any parent would be delighted to see how the experience affect them. For me, that was the miracle of Lourdes. A really wonderful experience. I would only go back, if I could follow their example.

The other thing about Lourdes is that it is a great place for young folk and the odd romance!!!

I told Winning Captains the odd Lourdes Story one night in the pub and he was pissing himself– especially one about meeting at the Holy Rosary statue you mentioned and guaranteeing a group from Paisley that they would lead the Easter Sunday procession with 300,000 souls at their back.

By the way thanks to all those who sent Birthday Greetings to my old man who was 86 last week. He had a great day and recalled his first visit to Celtic Park in April 1941– and yes he did give me his all time favourite team– in a jiffy!!!

As a result he has his first column in the next edition of the CQN Magazine which will appear next year.

By the way the CQN Annual does of course have a dedication to all of those who were on Winning Captains huge list of a couple of weeks back — so you all get a mention!!!

You have just summed Lourdes up to a tee!!

It is the people– especially the young people— who go there that are the Miracle of Lourdes.

I have been saying that for decades.

And as you say– great fun– especially the singing in the Royal Albert Cafe or the Little Flower tea Room.

I hope Lennie is brave today and plays some youngsters the team has been flat the last few games but the youth can bring with them some more energy.Back in the day going to play Ross County I would have felt comfortable that we could win by 2 or 3 goals unfortunately with Celtic at the moment you dont know what team will turn up the young stars who can play good football and score goals or the leaden feeted Celtic who cant string two passes together. It would be great to go through the league season without losing a game. H.H.

Thanks for the very kind and moving words, as posted, this was a Life changing experience for my daughter, it is like being hit by a tornado when she returns, with her stories of great joy, experienced by the kids.

2 years ago on her trip as part of the entertainment team, her group actually took 16 kids from the Coatbridge area. A 12 year old boy had never seen a pillow on a bed before, and was confused with such, how sad is that in our modern world ?

That young boy, would have experienced first hand the outstanding care of HCPT.

This is an annual event attended by groups from throughout the world, supported and funded purely through HCPT fundraising events, with a different country taking the lead each year, attended by 5000 kids in need last year alone.

Parkheadcumsalford, so glad you have managed this trip, and managed to get a huge uplifting benefit of such, I’m sure your Auld Da enjoyed it just as much in being there with you.

As Lennybhoy would say, Keep the Faith – in the Good still there within our Youth

I have posted on CQN for a number of years under various Blog Names I think those who say CQN has changed but not for the better have to remember time changes everything even your memory. When the blog started up very few posters knew one and other now many of the posters are good friends having met at the CQN golf days and various other events so it is only natural in my opinion that the blog will find a different direction. There are still a few lone posters who give there views on our club on a regular basis but they tend to be very much in the minority and unless they post something very controversial they are generally ignored by the majority on CQN.That is my opinion on CQN it is niether better or worse than the early days it is constantly evolving. AC Milan are currently 11th in Serie A [ one of a group of 4 with 12 points ]—3 points above a relegation place.

Something that has to be remembered about this site is that it is essentially what those of us who want to contribute make it.

Paul set some basic ground rules years ago, and in the main those are adhered to in terms of style, courtesy, language and what have you.

Beyond that, there is no great regulation and no multiple thread format which means you have to flit about from here to there. Just a simple timeline.

I realise that some people lurk and I realise that people will have differing views on this or that with some expressing their point of view more vigorously than others.

However, the written word often comes across as harsher and more severe than te same words in conversation and having met quite a few CQN’ers over the piece I think that sometimes people come across as far more aggressive or unbending than they actually are in person.

I believe CQN is a great source and a great force for Celtic fans and if there are those who long for the way the blog “used to be” I would only say that the only way you can influence a forum like this is to engage with it as much as you can.

Don’t stand back and have an discussion go down a road you don’t want it too without trying to influence it by sharing your view and opinion.

Also the blog is a great source of knowledge and advice on all things… so I would say to anyone “get involved”.

We are a broad church and a good community.

  23. Pogmathonyahun aka Laird of the Smiles on

    From Glen Gibbons:

Fergie revelation sums up Rangers’ decline and fall

Sir Alex Ferguson has long been a master of the concise, telling phrase, the best-known example of his brevity probably the one with which he gave an instant judgment on Manchester United’s absurdly dramatic victory in the 1999 Champions League final – “Football? Bloody hell”.Even he could be said to have topped that, however, with a revelation in his new autobiography, which encapsulates in less than ten words all the mismanagement and misfortune and the depth of the descent of Rangers over the past few years. Referring to the time in 1991 when Walter Smith, having succeeded Graeme Souness, lured Archie Knox from Old Trafford to Ibrox as his assistant, Ferguson writes, “I couldn’t get Martin (Edwards, the United chairman) to match Rangers’ offer”. From outbidding United for a first-team coach to being unable to settle a debt of just over £500 to the local newsagent is a jolting reminder of the financial devastation wrought by what Shakespeare would have called David Murray’s “vaulting ambition”.

Why – did Martin not believe in the use of dodgy EBT schemes?

As one of these ignored lone posters, I would like to form a CQN clique for them.

As you say, you have to post something controversial, insult somebody or say something crackpot like ‘We should have built the team round Regi Blinker’ to get any sort of feedback.
