Early tests required, playing poker with no cards

537

It’s been six weeks since Celtic have had something to play for: 1 May, a five goal win over Dundee.  Since then we wound down the remaining Premiership games before cranking up a fortnight ago at our new second home in Paisley, but it all comes into focus on Wednesday at Celtic Park, when we are expected to humble apparent Champions League whipping boys from Iceland.

People at Celtic have complained for years about having to play such important games in the middle of July, but I’ve never bought that argument.  If we have to face Legia-type opposition later this month, we can’t have an early enough test.  The challenge is known, it’s the responsibility of the club to be ready.

Stjarnan are likely to be the least resourced team we will face this summer, but if we get a comfortable win on Wednesday, these two games, as well as the friendlies against Eibar and Rennes, should provide ample opportunity to physically and tactically ready for the real test.

A few weeks back we discussed the game of brinksmanship involving Greece and it’s analogy in Scottish football, “Those sitting at the Syriza side of the table know they may be marching their citizens off the edge of a cliff”.

8 days ago Tsipras won his referendum mandate but quickly accepted that you can’t play poker if you don’t have any cards, never mind aces.  I wondered if he hoped to ‘lose’ the referendum.  I wonder if others hoped  the SFA would find ‘against’ them a few months back.  As we mentioned, it was “one of the classic failures of leadership – telling people what they want to hear in order to gain power, without any way of delivering on the promises made”.

If the Greeks had said ‘Yes’ Tsipras could have capitulated, blaming the will of the people.  If the SFA said ‘not Fit and Proper’, others could have declined to invest, blaming Peter Lawwell and his ‘cronies’ at Hampden.  I’m sure you could write the script yourself.

Populism’s easy, until you are given control, then it’s harder than granite.  We’ll see the same lesson played out in Scottish football in the months to come.  You need five aces in your hand to play poker with a billionaire, even then, don’t make assumptions.

So the board said they would do the living wage by failed to say they would punish the low paid workers by removing them off a bonus scheme they currently run ?

    Very very poor to read.

Our board do alot of good work, of that I have no doubt but that is disappointing to read.

I don’t think the trust would say Celtic have taken the workers off the bonus scheme if it was untrue .. Maybe they have but IMO they are smarter than that and would have waited to be 100% before releasing statement.

I’m sure the staff would give up their bonus scheme if it meant getting £12 an hour but I haven’t seen that being offered.

No matter your opinion of the trust or my opinion of the board if the trust are right in what they say then the board are in the wrong. Totally.. Iv rightly praised a lot of recent things the board have done but this sounds poor.

I don’t expect you to admit that . Up to yourself.

That pretty much sums it up and yes, you’re perfectly correct, the statement wasn’t released until there was confirmation from the head of HR at Celtic that the bonus scheme was being withdrawn.

No the why is a question for everyone on all blogs.

The SNP declared an underspend last year

We all know what happens when a department declares and underspend

They are telling the central govt they have been awarded too much

Duly the central govt reduces the budget for that dept.

So the SNP are very happy with food banks so happy they are giving money away to who exactly ?

  14. Well it looks to me like TCT forgot about the bonus scheme and Celtic didn’t, I put that down to poor negotiations on behalf of TCT, and they are now crying over spilled milk, and as I said the workers seem ok with it as the Celtic Board said , or have we not to believe the board then?

  18. Wonder how much the bonus scheme costs the club each year ?

Could the bonus scheme costs have covered the club becoming an official living wage payer ?

  19. TD67

Maybe the CT didn’t expect the board to withdraw something the workers were already entitled to.

Also like many low paid workers throughout the world fear would stop them speaking out or complaining to the club.

I’m pretty sure they would rather be on living wage and also entitled to the bonus scheme .

A bonus would make more of a difference to a low paid worker than one on few hundred thousand a year in my eyes.

If your sitting down with business men discussing money, expect the unexpected, they are running a business, that’s why I’m glad the board are running the club, and not TCT, and I doubt if anyone one is living in fear working at Celtic Park,.
