Easier to get into White House than US sports market

267

Celtic’s preparations got into gear over the weekend with the first part of a money-spinning three game tour of the USA.  They join Manchester City, Chelsea, Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid in games there over the next two weeks.  After facing DC United on Saturday, Celtic play City and Chelsea before heading home.

This kind of exposure is worth the trip for the wealthiest and best promoted clubs in the world; it is a measure of Celtic’s appeal that we are involved in such rarified atmosphere.  Turning devotion from the ex-pat community in North America into a wider commercial income is a tough challenge.  Champions League exposure will be our only conduit to this market after the players board the plane this weekend.

We will bank some money and get match practice, but the route to relevance in the US sports market is more difficult than getting an invite to the White House.

Great news from the Champions League draw – we’re not involved in it!

  1. Celtic are once again sleeping at the wheel, only time the board act swiftly is when they want a wage increase. I recall a time when the team was actually important now all they care about is profit for profit sake. We will again be pumped up and down eu

  2. SFtBs @ 6:00 PM,

For me we have been sucked into the mindset of the business gurus…

When I did project management, one of my several hats, they introduced JiT…

    Just in Time…

You ensure the materials arrive on site just when you need them

Helps the cash flow, saves on storage/security etc, etc, etc

An aul boy I worked with had a philosophy from back in the day when he was a project manager – better looking at it than looking for it…

Ask the folks at Ibrox what is the better methodology!?

    Anyway, I digress…

Celtic have a number of high level games this season.

Four (at least) old firm clashes, two semi finals and two finals at Hampden and eight (at least) UCL games…

That’s sixteen games where our brightest and best need to turn up and do the business

Spending as little as “necessary” on the football department is as flawed as the JiT mentality.

We made record revenue, record profits, and put record value on our squad under BR Mk1 and Ange, ’cause they put football excellence first and foremost.

    Celtic Mac – Hmmm……indeed.

He put over a minute in to Jonas and Remco in yesterday’s TT and didn’t look out of breath.

It left me shaking my head in literal disbelief.

As long as our quality signings arrive on time and aren’t being ordered from China . Come to think of it , maybe Bernardo’s stuck on a freighter in the Suez canal .

The 1950 Charity Cup final saw Danny Kaye in attendance and I assume John McPhail scored the 3 goals because Billy McPhail, his younger brother got 3 in the 7:1 game in 1957

Todays podium meister should be able to help SFTB :-) I havd seen pics of Danny kaye at a game

Having ridiculous profit whilst neglecting your product is a false economy and bad business in the longer term, the balance we are witnessing at present is wrong. Think we are likely the only football club

  9. Towards the end of last season the SFA imposed a very heavy fine on Dundee as the club’s pitch had twice been deemed unplayable. The Ibrox club now has a stadium which is a health hazard. Why no sanction?

Celtic Mac – indeed. I can’t comment on athletics, but I believe the majority of the peloton are clean.

I would love to see the same level of scrutiny and testing applied to football and rugby.

Also to drop a grenade on the page

Am I in a minority of people who liked Trump as president and looks forward to him being re-elected??

    —–

    Hey Clunky,

Your grenade seems to be a dud. 😀

I dont really follow American politics too much, I struggle to keep interested in our own circus.

Most of the information i see about Trump is from the MSM who relay what their masters tell them to. I think a better information vehicle is social media.

What I do know is that some of our past American posters supported Trump and gave their reasons for doing so.

No doubt Trump is a divisive figure, but will he make the life of ordinary Americans better, that is the question ? Most Americans dont really care about foreign policy they are focused on domestic issues. Isolationism is not a bad choice for them.

Interesting choice of Trumps running mate. A direct pitch for the working class.in direct opposition to the ruling class.

Was / is Joe Biden a good president? I have not got a scooby, history will judge.

But he got a favourable reception on here and much was influenced by his Irish roots through his great great grandparents which President Biden exclaimed gleefully.

Recently we have discussed Trumps Scottish connection via his mother, but will that bring favour with the Scottish people who knows, but he has directly invested in Scotland through his golf courses.

Compared to Trump, the most revered Democrat President, Obama has a legacy of endless war during his two terms.

What way will the voters of the USA jump? Who knows.

Personally I dont really care, but the election circus will probably make good viewing.

  20. Go look at the uefa coefficient points over the last 5 years and them compare them to same 5 year bank balance and if you can tell me it does not stink then with due respect you know knowt

Thanks Mcphail bhoy, Tom McL and WITS for your responses. I’ve been out all day and just saw them now.

A really well thought out film where the sound was every bit as important as the visuals.

Wikipedia gives a good description of how the film was made.

  24. Genuine question which I have asked before.

Where do you all get your news and information from. ?

I get mine mainly from social media, and I have learned a great deal from here over the years.

I am not surprised that the western establishments are trying to bin Tiking Toking. Very difficult to control its owners. It refreshes the parts that the MSM cannot or will not.

  25. I am resurrecting the Quick News Quinta Sentinel Superbru comp for the SPFL season forthcoming. Invitations should automatically go out to all who were in the comp last season and you will be automatically approved. Those of you who joined us for the Euros competition will not get an invitation (that pool is defunct now) but you can join too if you load up Superbru and ask to Join the Pool with the name above (QNQS). You will also be asked for a password which is inkshoed.

I am not asking anyone to send money to join just yet because

    a) We are still clearing payments for the Euro winners from our accounts

    b) We are considering reducing the entry fee and the winnings & doing it more for fun

    c) We (CRC & myself) will be running a number of Last Man Standing Comps this season with a specific charity in mind and that will be our main fundraiser.

So, for the moment just join and forget about entrance money. Encourage your friends to join in. I will approve anyone who contributes to a Celtic site as a Celtic fan. If there are any questions or difficulties, let me know

  26. Clunks,
