Edouard pushed out Celtic transfer record

911

Celtic have activated a clause in their loan deal for Odsonne Edouard (20) with Paris Saint-Germain to sign the player on a four-year permanent contract.  The deal will cost the club an initial £4.5m but the add-ons which follow will soon make the deal the club’s highest transfer fee paid.

To give some perspective, Celtic last broke their transfer fee record with the £6m purchase of Neil Lennon in 2000.

Watching Odsonne develop during his loan period has been an education.  Brendan Rodgers put Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths on the bench to allow Odsonne the game time he needed to grow.  His early-season rustiness was history by March, when he came off the bench when Celtic were down to 10 men at Ibrox, brushed aside what defences there was, to score a memorable winner.

The last player to match our record transfer fee was John Hartson in 2001.  Like John then, Odsonne is third choice striker, so the work does not stop here.

Great business, well done all concerned.

  12. I’m not a big fan of WC scouting. I think Simon Kuper counselled against it in Soccernomics too.

It’s mostly lazy clubs with money to waste (EPL and Championship basically) eho get over impressed by defenders from underdog teams who look good as they are in the thick of the action or by the guys who score breakaway goals against attacking teams.

Their routine skill levels get over-rated because we think they are performing at an elite level but the World Cup and even the Euros is a standard below Champions League where teams perform using the best players from multiple nations. The fees they command, when they are “hot” after a tournament also leads to transfer and wage inflation. The players concerned rarely perform as well int heir new tougher club environment than they did at the WC.

We have seen this occur with players like El Haddie Duff with Senegal, Yedlin & Altidore of the USA and even our ain Christian Gamboa.

I expect our scouting targets are not playing at the WC or like the Iranian forward, were noticed by us before they went there. If they have a noticeably good tournament they will price themselves out of our range: if they have a bad tourney- you have to question whether they can cope with increased pressure.

We are best served shopping in leagues where there is a reasonable competitive standard, for younger players who have not yet crystalised on the rich clubs’ radar, abd are playing in countries where transfer fees have not yet sky-rocketed.

Odsonne Edouard would outshine the best forwards at the WC outwith Spain, Brazil, Argentina, England, Belgium, Uruguay, Portugal and France’s top team. There are other defenders out there who are not being showcased at the WC where better value can be had.

Despite what I am saying, i would still be delighted if we land a Fabian Schar type because we carried out our negotiations before the lazy scouts get to see him at the WC.

    You’re kidding, right?

We have met and I have a few more years on my clock than you have.

I was also around during the days of Reagan, Trump, Idi Amin, Ayatolla Khomeini. Brezhnev and Milosevic. I do not fear that, because Jeremy Corbyn has a genital similarity to these characters, that I do not want another male leader.

Comforting as it might be to seek victimised status, the white male stll enjoys more power, control and wealth than non-white males and all colours of women.

  18. Thatcher wasn’t a bad person because she was a woman. Thatcher was a bad person because she was a profoundly bad person.

That would like comparing us men to Hitler, Stalin, Ian Paisley and trump. And resenting us getting equality of opportunity and salary with women…because they were men and so are we.
