Education, health, equality, poverty, our values

99

I’m fortunate to have met many of our greats socially; all of the Lions, many from before their era and lots since.  I’ll never say or write a bad word about them, but Celtic players are no different from others in the societies they hail (hail) from.  God help them if camera-phone opportunists combine with the Daily Record.

In the middle of a debate about single mothers with one former player I concluded it was best to move the conversation on, people get to a stage in their lives that world views cannot be altered in a pub.  There have been other occasions when I’ve not even approached contesting the world view in question, who was I to interrupt a social meeting and tell……

Retaining values is important.  This doesn’t mean we become pious, but we uphold views and educate, if possible.  To encourage learning in people is one of our club’s four stated values (improve health, encourage equality and tackle poverty being the others).  Education starts at home, after disciplinary issues are dealt with, but we will not be dictated to by the Daily Record.

Murrayfield will be more than a quarter full.

There are enough Celtic fans in Edinburgh, Lothians and Fife to fill it twice over and I reckon it will be at least 3/4′s full if not a sell out.

Thanks for the response but I doubt your numbers….it is during the holiday season and you only have to look at CP for the qualifiers this season…the place was like a morgue apart from the Karagandy game. There are no real big teams at this stage of the CL and even though it’s in Edinburgh with the surrounding Celtic support I can’t see it. Hope to be proved wrong tho.

I agree, our agenda should not be set by tabloids. Also, our players should never out us in a position where we set their agenda.

That should be clearly set out in their contracts.

I didn’t realise Celtic provided a class in “How not to be a racist”.

At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself if you’ll be on your feet cheering that low-life next time he scores in the hoops.

Fine, don’t sack him, but next time you hold Celtic up as a beacon of morality, forgive me if I get a bit cynical.

    ………………………………………..

While your moral stance on this is commendable, it is, sadly, also naive in 21st century UK where clubs are bound by employment laws and have to follow disciplinary and grievance procedures. Failure to do so can leave them exposed to employment tribunals and punishments of their own due to failure to follow procedures appropriately. To complicate matters further, Leigh Griffiths is an asset who recently cost the club £800k – £1m and as someone correctly pointed out last night the shareholders of Celtic plc would not be happy if an asset of this value was discarded for no financial return to the club.

There is also the fact that a newspaper which openly favours our bitter rivals and tries to trash us at every opportunity seems to be hell bent on setting an agenda for us.

Why would education only start after disciplinary matters are dealt with?

Education of a guy who has previous in this area should have started as soon as he came through the door. In fact, I would be more than surprised if it wasn’t. This would maker consider as in your lead that education isn’t possible.

I agree that we shouldn’t be dictated to by the daily record but I also believe that we should properly deal with serious matters even if the daily record report on them.

Interesting wee info piece on BBC ref the performance of EPL clubs who have fired their manager this season.

Hughton at Norwich was the 8th EPL manager fired since the start of the season, here’s how the others have fared since they brought in the new guy:

    Sunderland: Before 20th; After 20th

Crystal Palace: Before 19th; After 14th

    Fulham: Before 18th; After 18th

    Cardiff: Before 17th; After 19th

    Spurs: Before 7th; After 7th

West Brom: Before 16th; After 16th

    Swansea: Before 12th; After 15th

Only Tony Pulis has made a positive difference since he came in at Crystal Palace, and to be fair, Pulis is one of the better English managers around.

For the rest, changing manager hasn’t made a damned bit of difference unless it is a negative difference, as with Cardiff replacing Malky McKay with OG Solskjaer, and similarly at Swansea.

If it repeats to form, Norwich, currently 17th in the division, should escape relegation by virtue of the new guy managing to keep them… in 17th place, albeit the poor fellow doesn’t have much room for error.

Well, I thought it was interesting.

I think it actually adds a bit of excitement to the qualifiers. It’s a different stadium to watch Celtic in. We may never be back there. It’s a sort of one of I think the support will recognise that and will attend. As I said there must be at least a quarter of a million Celtic fans in the Lothians and Fife. They will turn out. It’s huge for us Lothian punters to see our club almost on home turf and show to the Edinburgh clubs what a real big team are all about. I expect at least 40k. I think the supporters from all over Scotland and maybe even further afield will fancy it. The atmosphere that can be generated in Murrayfield can be tremendous with it’s design. I know quite a few Hibs fans and even Jambos are tempted to go along for that special European atmosphere depending who we draw out the hat. Throw the tourists into the equation too there will be more than enough there if the Celtic support don’t take up the full quota but I think we will. The fans will be out in force.

    ………………………..

Beg to differ. There would have to be an investigation first. You would have to be given an opportunity to state your case and have a representative present at any hearing. You could take your employers to a tribunal if they omitted any steps in their stated disciplinary procedure.

As far as we know, Celtic are currently investigating the matter. They are possibly going through the steps of their stated disciplinary procedure with the outcome yet to be decided. Posters on here are merely stating what we think/hope should happen.

  19. Did not really want to comment on the Leigh Griffiths situation but Up Over The Goals post has stirred me from my indifference. All I know of Leigh Griffiths is what has been commented about him in the SMSM, his peccadilloes have been well commented on by our friends in the Scottish media. I have not read a comment on hear from anyone who actually knows the boy and therefore can give an informed judgement as to what sort of person he is. I would hope that our club will take him under their wing and help young Leigh see the error of his ways and become a better person. Surely that would be the Christian thing to do :)

If you’re expecting to have a team full of players who are culturally sensitive and politically correct you’ll be waiting a long time.

Like Paul67, you are wandering off topic. This is about a club and a manager who have gone on record as saying that any manifestation of racism by their players is “an instant sackable offence” and a player who has directly flouted that in a very public manner.

Obviously the club can’t lay themselves open to accusations of unfair dismissal. Follow the correct disciplinary procedure, and we’ll see if Celtic have indeed made it clear to their employees what their policy on racism is.

STEFAN Johansen has already settled into life at Celtic, both on and off the park, and he’s already beginning to establish himself as an important part of the team.

The Norwegian midfielder has picked up his second championship medal in a year, adding a Scottish Premiership one to the Norwegian league winner’s medal he won with Strømsgodset.

Now he’s got his sights set on playing in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and experiencing the unique atmosphere of Celtic Park on a European night.

“I knew the expectations here were high, but that’s a good step for me,” he said. “I won the league with a small club in Norway, and then I came here and everyone always expects Celtic to win so that’s another pressure.

“The Champions League is very important for the club. You gain experience and play with some really good players, so it can only make me a better player. And when you’re playing at Celtic, you have to do well, otherwise you won’t play.

“First of all we’ve got to finish this season and then start our preparations for the Champions League qualifiers, and we want to qualify for the third year in a row.”

The Norwegian internationalist is coping well with the on-field pressures that come with playing for Celtic, while he’s also getting used to the fact he’s becoming a recognisable face when he’s out and about in Glasgow, given that he’s playing for the biggest club in Scotland.

“The people, not only in Glasgow, but throughout Scotland are very nice,” he said, “and if someone’s coming up and asking for a picture, that’s always nice.

“That’s what it’s like here. Celtic is a huge club and it means a lot to the city, and it’s all positive. It’s also important to give something back to the fans.

“They come here week in, week out and if you’re out shopping and they ask for a picture, of course, they will get it. You’re nice to them because they’re nice to you.”
