Education, health, equality, poverty, our values

99

I’m fortunate to have met many of our greats socially; all of the Lions, many from before their era and lots since.  I’ll never say or write a bad word about them, but Celtic players are no different from others in the societies they hail (hail) from.  God help them if camera-phone opportunists combine with the Daily Record.

In the middle of a debate about single mothers with one former player I concluded it was best to move the conversation on, people get to a stage in their lives that world views cannot be altered in a pub.  There have been other occasions when I’ve not even approached contesting the world view in question, who was I to interrupt a social meeting and tell……

Retaining values is important.  This doesn’t mean we become pious, but we uphold views and educate, if possible.  To encourage learning in people is one of our club’s four stated values (improve health, encourage equality and tackle poverty being the others).  Education starts at home, after disciplinary issues are dealt with, but we will not be dictated to by the Daily Record.

Interesting reading. Just goes to show that despite all that’s said at the time of these manager’s sackings, a fresh approach is not always what’s needed.

Also, sorry to point this out but Tony Pulis is a Welshman.

For years the smsm have been trying to drag us down to the same level as oldco / sevco ….. They won’t succeed, but they will keep trying…….their blind hatred has led them to where Scottish Football is today……..so, I say …bring it on…Celtic are ‘bigger’ and better than all you small-minded bigots…… our day came when oldco were liquidated, and we will celebrate again when the adopted sevco go down the same route…HH

It’s not on the statute books that the PM cannot be a Roman Catholic. It is, however, impossible to be Lord Chancellor or monarch.

I suppose the PM situation is one of those “unwritten rules”, akin to the Ibrox policy of old.

Murrayfield will be less than half full for our first qualifying game – im guessing about 25,000 if we’re lucky

I don’t get offended by anything, either what’s said to or about me, or what’s said to or about anyone else, life’s too short, so ive not really got a comment to make on the LG affair, other than hurry up and sort it and stop giving the rags ammo

I nearly married Zara Phillips, met her in Viccies one night, nipped her for a couple of years, took her on holiday to magaluf, made dinners for her in my wee flat, while she took me to the big hoose for several banquets, popped the question, she said yes, then her maw found out about my background and after a night of torture in the tower, was forced to call the wedding off. So whoever said not just anyone can join the monarchy is right

I admire your optimism Livibhoy, but I fear an atmosphere akin to 3 sides of Easter Road on Sunday afternoon after 117mins.

Remember we will be seeded, so likely opponents are going to be perhaps a team of fishermen from the Faroes, or joiners from Norway. You know, a team the equivalent of the over-paid “footballers” of Sevco.

Sky have bought GAA rights (not a late April fool).

This is a mock-up of Sky Sports Saturday covering the GAA.

You’ll need headphones or speakers. It’s only 3-4 minutes long but it’s the funniest thing I’ve seen in years.

It’s the 3rd item with Phil Thompson gasping at the screen.

    Example –

“While Paul Merson was monitoring Kilkenny v Wexford (“THEY’VE COME OUT WIF STICKS, JEFF!!”), Phil Thompson was on duty for Cork v Kerry (“HE’S CLEAN THROUGH, JEFF . . . NOOOOOO, HE’S PUT IT OVER THE BAR!!!”), the fella befuddled when asked who won. “Eeeeeh, I’m not sure Jeff. It’s, eeeeeeh, 6-17 to 3-23 . . . I’ll get me calculator.””

Name a woman president of America. Name a prime minister of A non white uk ethnicity?

Just because there hasn’t been any doesn’t mean that it’s forbidden.

It’s the catholic relief act that prevents the prime minister from carrying out certain duties but would fall foul of anti discrimination laws now.

A few seasons back I attended the unveiling of jinkys statue in front of the main stand

I wanted to get some good pictures so I was there at 11am and stood right at the barrier in front of the statue

Ten minutes before the lions and jinkys family came out … The press pack walked into the gap between the barrier and the statue . Put their wee step ladders up and completely obstructed my view . I complained to them and the stewards but was met with ” official press photographers ” until jinkys wife intervened and agreed that jinky would have wanted this day for us fans and we should have unrestricted views

That day I pointed out that they get free access all areas while we have to pay … They contribute next to nothing and should a bad news story come they would print that before the statue

That day .. We played hearts … Aiden had a run in with WgS in the dressing room … And that was the back page story with the statue small time on an inside page

Anyone who trusts or believes the SMSM ….. Take a hard look at yourself …

Interesting wee info piece on BBC ref the performance of EPL clubs who have fired their manager this season.

Hughton at Norwich was the 8th EPL manager fired since the start of the season, here’s how the others have fared since they brought in the new guy:

    Sunderland: Before 20th; After 20th

Crystal Palace: Before 19th; After 14th

    Fulham: Before 18th; After 18th

    Cardiff: Before 17th; After 19th

    Spurs: Before 7th; After 7th

West Brom: Before 16th; After 16th

    Swansea: Before 12th; After 15th

Only Tony Pulis has made a positive difference since he came in at Crystal Palace, and to be fair, Pulis is one of the better English managers around.

For the rest, changing manager hasn’t made a damned bit of difference unless it is a negative difference, as with Cardiff replacing Malky McKay with OG Solskjaer, and similarly at Swansea.

If it repeats to form, Norwich, currently 17th in the division, should escape relegation by virtue of the new guy managing to keep them… in 17th place, albeit the poor fellow doesn’t have much room for error.

Well, I thought it was interesting.

    ——————————————————————–

It is interesting. However, here’s Norwich’s remaining games :

    Sat 12 Apr – Fulham v Norwich

    Sun 20 Apr – Norwich v Liverpool

Sat 26 Apr – Man Utd v Norwich

Sun 4 May- Chelsea v Norwich

What odds do the bookies give for them remaining up?

  15. Leigh Griffiths arrived at Celtic with baggage and attitude issues.

Anthony Stoles arrived at Celtic with baggage and attitude issues.

Derek Riordan arrived at Celtic with baggage and attitude issues.

Scott Brown arrived at Celtic with baggage and attitude issues.

Can anyone see anything else that links these players?

Is there enough evidence to suggest that another Scottish club that plays in green & white should look at their player development structures?

  16. Very well said Paul.I fear though it will not be good enough to placate our own version of”The Salem Witch Hunt”.They are demanding blood, and no matter what is said. The boy is now being called a “Low life”by some paragon of virtue on here.

Having watched Jinky since his first game for Celtic, was even at his wedding, god knows what these “Moral guardians would have made of him”The greatest ever Celt”.Alcohol problems,on field indiscipline, off field indiscipline,a nightmare for Big Jock.I could say more, but wont.Would they be uttering the same Fatwahs against him.

All this fairy tale nonsense about “The Celtic Ethos”is all very well on a piece of paper,or some fans fantasy daydreams, but in the real world,it is just that,a fantasy. We are all imperfect, our club is imperfect, the world is imperfect.

What good should be taken out of this,as opposed to the hun hordes across the city,is the fact that many fans feel so strongly on the matter.Nothing wrong with that. While they glory in Novos tweets on Paedophilia, and Famine references,we rail against football fans singing in pubs. There are limits though. To call for someone to lose their employment,to their detriment, and that of the club we all love, goes beyond the pale

Stupidity is not a crime. If it was Jinky would have done “Life”.

You raise a good point, bud. Personally I have never had a conversation with anyone down here about my religion, but England is by definition legally and institutionally sectarian.

I don’t believe Scotland is,as there are no barriers-officially-to attainment of office.

Indeed even to being a Scottish monarch,as the last one-MQOS-was Catholic.

Strange that it is practiced in Scotland but rarely in England.

  18. my experience of racism is very much the flip side of what most other people have experienced, away back in the last century I bought a corner shop in Hamilton from an Asian family. we traded away often being called white pakies, but as it was all in fun no offence was ever implied or taken, busness was good and we moved house from larkhall to Hamilton in 2001 (don’t ask me about bigotry, that is a separate issue) in 2002 we then bought our second shop in the silvertonhill area of Hamilton, as there was no need to inform the VAT of our additional shop we just continued trading away the wife ‘four kids, two dugs and me the white tim packies fae larky (how to confuse a racist bigot?) …..now to the crux of my story I received a letter to inform me that I was to get a vat inspection in the December of 2004, so I informs my accountant who duly attends when the vat man comes to call, mr C HE SAYS IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION THAT THERE HAS BEEN A VERY SIGNIFICANT SPIKE IN YOUR TURNOVER SINCE THE START OF 2003 CAN YOU EXPLAIN THIS?…. when I explained that shop two was just bought the year before and with the purchasing costs and restocking meant that only at the start of 2003 did we actually start to clear our feet, after quite a bit of oooing and aaaing he came to ythe conclusion that I was just being evasive and that I had only started to declare the true sales figures to increase the market value of the shops PAKISTANIS ARE RENOWN FOR THIS (his words)…..now he wouldn’t even consider saying that ten years on and his ruling came back a fine of just under £9k….or potential jailtime….on appeal I submitted both shops till rolls, highlighting that there was a spike everytime celtic were playing. I also added that having proudly announce that I was a celtic man a lot of the celtic people in the area where loyal to me and my family. it was a worrying few weeks but I did win my appeal for obvious reasons I never made it to Seville, but I still have a story to tell about ‘my’ road to Seville H. H.
