EFC acknowledgement

160

Following his departure as chairman of Celtic, Peter Lawwell this week stepped down as vice-chair of European Football Clubs (EFC).  The EFC, until October 2025 known as the European Club Association (ECA), is an 819 club member association, which creates a direct platform between clubs and associations like Uefa and Fifa.  Until its formation, clubs had to go through their national associations to get an item onto the agenda at Uefa or Fifa.

This marginalised many, including for many years, Celtic.  Acknowledging we needed a greater influence in the game, Lawwell was elected to the Executive Committee of the ECA in 2014.  Following the dramas that financial irresponsibility visited on Scottish football, through his leadership role at the ECA, Lawwell became the key architect of Uefa’s new Financial Sustainability Regulations (FSR), which came into effect four years ago.

Oversight and processes are now in place which did not exist when David Murray sold Oldco Rangers for £1 to a liquidation expert, with inevitable consequences.  Today. Murray and his successor Craig Whyte, would not get away with running a football club in the way they did back then.

Lawwell was also heavily involved in the 2024 redesign of the Champions and Europa Leagues.  As well as offering more competitive variation and being a sporting success, the new format distributes more money to clubs from smaller nations, which struggle to earn through domestic broadcast contracts.

It is a measure of the his achievements on behalf of clubs everywhere who were underrepresented by their national associations, while under threat from lobbying from the richest clubs, that the EFC retained Lawwell in the role of Independent Board Member, where he will “continue to provide leadership and support to [the]EFC”.

That continuing role will benefit clubs across Europe.  For Celtic going forward, it is impossible to imagine us ever again having such transformative influence on the game domestically (refereeing accountability was less than zero 20 years ago) or internationally.

An EFC statement noted Peter’s previously unacknowledged influence:

“EFC congratulates Peter Lawwell for his remarkable achievements over many years at Celtic FC and thanks him for his long-held commitment to European club football as EFC Vice-Chair, EFC Executive Committee Member and Board Member since 2014.

Peter leads EFC’s Finance Working Group and has previously served on UEFA’s Club Competitions Committee. He also sits on the Board of Administration of UC3, the EFC-UEFA joint venture which manages the commercialisation of the UEFA club competitions, and has played a key leadership role at European level in ensuring all European clubs and their interests are at the heart of the game.

EFC will now be working with Peter to organise a smooth transition of his EFC roles and responsibilities. We will continue to represent and support Celtic FC, along with our 800+ other EFC members, to ensure clubs and their interests are central to the ongoing development of European and global club football.

We wish Peter and his family all the very best for what comes next.”

This is despite all the technology and the latest computer hard/software.

Does any sound of mind human being think they walked on the moon in 1969.

    Rockets indeed.

There is no doubt Peter Lawwell is very highly regarded in football hierarchy.

  4. GREENPINATA – History tells us that 6 Apollo missions landed on the moon 57-odd years ago when rockets seemed to be going into space every other week. Remarkable that nobody has walked there since then especially when you consider all the industry advancements made since then.

When you consider computing processing power, the Apollo Guidance Computer (AGC) operated at roughly 0.04 mhz and 4 kb of RAM. A modern smartphone or flight controller is over 100,000 times faster and possesses millions of times more memory.

Not worth pondering too much or you get lost down the rabbit hole.

Time to reflect on his role in the chaos Celtic are in now and his CL failures over the years.

No comparison to what Fergus achieved in 5 years from zero.

His attempt to create a dynasty with the Lawwell name up in smoke. Just the puppets left.

    Bye Bye Peter !!

  10. There really are some sad bitter little people on here.

Folks who have not done a thing of consequence in their pathetic lives who seem to only comment to express their bitterness at those who have actually stepped up themselves.

I guess it’s kinda sad. Still maybe it allows some frustrations out and saves some blood pressure prescriptions.

The restructuring of the Champions League favours clubs from the big five leagues more than ever before, in the 2024–25 season, England, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France occupy 22 of the 36 league-phase spots.

Ever wondered why you are not running Celtic ? Or why you havent been headhunted to be on the board ?

  17. Lawwell’s day job as CEO with Celtic where he consistently failed to provide various Managers with the players to win qualifiers for the CL , is his legacy for me, incidentally a coach and horses is being driven through the regulations on loses and costs of squads with Chelsea in particular doing what they like and others having share issues to balance the books as they have spent in excess of income, I’m sure he’ll enjoy the talking shop though.

  18. would not get away with running a football club in the way they did back then………………..

Nearly 18 months ago, a 12-week hearing between City lawyers and the Premier League took place with all those in football still waiting for the final outcome to be issued. City were charged with 115 breaches of financial rules, though the actual figure is believed to be closer to 130.

Yes, Lawwell and his cronies have ensured that this will happen.

The blue pound and the “old firm” back in the swing.

  25. Why? Celtic will still have its income stream which will be the envy of every other club in Scotland, what we don’t have is a functioning football department that gets the good players we need into the club in a timeous manner, that is what will allow Sevco or any other club to overtake us, this season 8 defeats, twice to Hearts and the giants of Dundee Utd, the football club is a disaster.

  26. Maolmuire O Muirgheasa on

Was it the Celtic fans who failed to purchase the players to take them to another level?

The fall of the club to where it resides today is not the fault of the fans, it is the fault of cretins like yourself Burnley, who bootlicked their way to the odd crumb falling off the table and pretended to have insider information, when Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles could see what was happening.

    You utter imbecile.

    Key Committee Appointments:

    Audit Committee Chair: Sharon Brown

    Remuneration Committee Chair: Thomas Allison

Nomination Committee: The committee members typically include Dermot Desmond and Tom Allison (Senior Independent Director).

Governance: The Nomination Committee operates under specific terms to manage board composition and succession.

You require Dermot plus Tom Allison to approve of any individual who wants to serve on the board

I’m living in hope someone with expert knowledge/expertise who has a an “A” list career in playing, managing scouting in top flight football being appointed onto the board there is certainly a gap for such an individual, if they post on CQN pages who cares, but this PLC Board are absolutely unqualified as none of them have ever played managed coached scouted at any level in top class football, in fact I don’t think any of them would be qualified to carry the team hamper into the dressing room

    aff oot

  29. In a week where Chelsea announced losses of near £300 million and the Huns announced yet another share issue (£100 million raised in equity to cover losses over the last ten years), I personally wouldn’t be lauding UEFA’s FSR. The rules are clearly a paper tiger.

As for restructuring of the CL, it means nothing to us. Celtic won’t be near the CL for the next decade under this board.
