Efe and Izzie getting hard time on TV

754

I was slightly miffed at Neil Lennon’s TV comments on Efe Ambrose yesterday, “He can’t cross”, but on reflection, better Neil points out the player’s flaws to the nation than gives him a ringing endorsement.  I’d a similar sentiment after Emilio Izaguirre’s dangerous looking forward step against France, which was never in danger of making contact with an opponent, when an ever-unhelpful commentator assured us Izzie, “has that in his locker”.  Anyone who has watched him for four years will know he doesn’t.

Based purely on what’s been offered up on UK TV, neither player will be attracting an offer, which is good.

Both Honduras and Nigeria have a difficult task ahead if they are to remain in the tournament beyond the group stage.  Fraser Forster’s England also have it all to do.  It’s been great for the three of them to get to the World Cup but the sooner they’re home, uninjured, the better.

  1. Neil Lennon is no longer the Celtic manager. He is a pundit.

He has been honest about the players who were under him at Celtic. None of them have been outstnding so far.

My take on it last night was that Neil had a wedge on Nigeria he seemed gutted about their inability to win the game. It was painful to watch the Nigerians stumble around giving the ball away and giving away stupid fouls. Efe is wasted at RB. Not his position at all. I suspect Neil gets a fair ribbing from his fellow pundits during the games when his former players make a mistake or do something daft and plays up to that when the cameras are rolling. It certainly seemed that way to me.

I think Neil is pretty decent on the TV and I am enjoying watching him relaxed and having a joke with these guys whilst watching the world cup.

    Good luck to him.

I always think that regardless of the danger of attracting a buyer it is good when our players do well at International level. Neil Lennon is only repeating his usual behaviour of criticising players in public. He is allowed to do it now whereas in the past he was reacting to a poor result, missed chance or indiscretion.

I find it interesting that he picked Efe to play a few hours after he came back from he African nations vs Juve in the last 16. All he has said is he can’t cross the ball. No harm.

His comments on Samaras were on a similar vein to what he had said through his time managing him. Ie he is frustrating because he has the ability but for some reason can’t apply it.

On another note, England are fixated as usual and this time on Rooney. Their fixation ma mean they drop out earlier than usual. I’d drop Rooney and play Llalana, drop the advert star in goal and move Hendrson back for Gerard then play Wilshere.

Seem to be in the minority here but I would rather Izzie, Efe and Foster had brilliant world cups.

It lifts the profile of the club the player and of course their value

    (From The Guardian)

“Is it true that Chilean players drank vodka during the 1962 World Cup because they thought it would help their chances of beating the USSR?” pondered Steven Davison back in 2006.

Incredibly, Steven, it is. During the group stage, the hosts employed an interesting new tactic of pre-game stereotypical eating: before the opening 3-1 win over Switzerland, they ate cheese, followed by a preparatory meal of spaghetti before the 2-0 success against Italy.

Once in the quarter-finals, the Chileans prepared for their game with the mighty Union of Soviet Socialist Republics by downing a couple of Smirnoffs. The ploy actually worked and Chile went on to win 2-1. Coffee was the order of the day before the semi-final with Brazil, but although it perked them up no end in the morning, it couldn’t stop the Brazilians from winning 4-2 and going on to lift the trophy. Eduardo Galeano later wrote in Soccer in Sun and Shadow that Chile “gobbled down spaghetti, chocolate, and vodka, but choked on the coffee”.

  12. Celtic appoint John Collins as assistant manager

CELTIC Football Club today confirmed that Celtic Manager Ronny Deila has appointed former Celtic midfielder John Collins to the position of Assistant Manager.

In an illustrious playing career, John made 229 appearances for Celtic from 1990 to 1996, also enjoying successful spells at Monaco, Everton, Fulham and Hibernian. John also collected 58 caps for Scotland and played in both the 1998 World Cup and Euro 1996 tournaments.

John has held managerial positions at Hibernian FC, winning the Scottish League Cup in 2007. He was also Manager of Charleroi in Belgium in 2008 and appointed Director of Football at Livingston FC in 2012.

Celtic Manager Ronny Deila said: “I am delighted to appoint John to the position of Assistant Manager. I have had a number of meetings with John, I can see what the Club means to him and I can see the qualities that he will bring to Celtic.

“He is a first-class coach and has ideas on football which are very similar to mine so I am sure he will be a great addition to my team.

“He will start immediately and together we will now prepare for this first day of training next week. We have important matches in the near future so I am pleased that I have been able to secure him so quickly. Now we can get to work.”

John Collins said: “It is a huge honour for me to return to Celtic, the Club which has always been such a major part of my life.

“I am grateful to Ronny for giving me this wonderful opportunity and I look forward to working closely with him and the players to ensure that we can continue to bring the good times to Celtic.

“I know what a great club Celtic is and I know exactly what the Club means to our fans.

“I will support the Manager in every way and I am sure that together with our players, the backroom staff and the fans, we can all play our part in bringing success to the Club.”

“Based purely on what’s been offered up on UK TV, neither player will be attracting an offer, which is good.”

Hey Paul, I’m glad you think that players not being sold is good.

I was certainly struggling to understand this new wave thinking that selling our players was great for us. I’m glad I’m not alone there.

  19. From reports on here, John Collins seems to have been a class act for years.

A young, energetic, like minded management team.

He also has that elusive quality “Celtic minded”.
