Efe the enigma, when our heroes get ill

480

The challenge Efe Ambrose will face should he proposed move to Hibs go through will be considerably less taxing that what he faced in the Premiership, or in Europe, with Celtic. Efe will go down in folklore as another African Cup of Nations enigma.

He was part of the heroic story against Barcelona in November 2012, before heading to the African Cup of Nations two months later. That tournament would see the player achieve the peak of his continent’s football Kilimanjaro. He played right back for champions, Nigeria.

That was on the Sunday. By the Tuesday he had been flown across the globe and made the starting line-up for Celtic in their Champions League last 16 game against Juventus. Two minutes into the game Efe was caught underneath the ball and out of position, Juventus exploited the lapse to the full.

As far as Efe’s time at the top goes, that was that. Since then his form has been on a pronounced downwards trajectory. The thing is, he’s still only 28. There was a player of considerable value in there one. If someone can bring focus to him, there may be again.

A word on matters relating to illness and medical information of our heroes…………

Pretty much everyone knew of Billy McNeill’s condition for some time but thankfully, it wasn’t subject to online speculation. There are a few guidelines on health matters which are worth observing:

Health is a private matter and should not be discussed online unless and until the person or family decide otherwise.

While we feel close to our heroes and will naturally want to offer support at a time of need, serious illness is the most private of matters, it is wholly inappropriate for a former footballer to hear his condition is a matter of public knowledge.

A bereavement should only be ‘revealed’ online by someone acting on the explicit instructions of the family. The unofficial release of this type of news is a very regretful manifestation of the internet age.

In recent years, we have seen many occasions of older celebrities’ deaths being incorrectly reported, then retweeted and retold thousands of times before it is denied. For an ill person and their family this can be a horrific experience.

The world can do without our condolences for a couple of hours until the family concerned have been able to contact all members.

These guidelines are scrupulously followed by the mainstream media in Scotland, who will hear of a footballer’s bereavement but hold the news – and prepare their reaction – until the family are ready.

For former-Celtic players, the club will usually be in touch with the family and release the news at the appropriate time. If you want to express your condolences, prepare your thoughts but hold until an official announcement.

We’ll see what happens but so far it appears the harassment is bad enough for her to walk out on a great job.

Well, we’re at different stations, timaloy.

I thought you were referring to comments on CQN. Apols for the impending Pc slaughtering I was going to give you ;))

I understand you mean the outside world’s social media treatment of her?

Well, the culprits won’t be from on here, or our support, I’d wager.

What more would we expect from anonymous Huns faced with a pretty Celtic-oriented female?

  2. I asked a question here on Feb 24th regarding where we could watch the cup game this Sunday in Malaga.

ALMORE kindly suggested The John Lemon Bar in Benalmadena.

I have been in touch with them and if we can’t get it in the city of Malaga, we will definitely be heading down there.

Anyway, I came across this list during my search, it may be of help to fellow Celts when traveling abroad :

This is a family site so I’d be breaking the rules by linking it.

There have been several fans posting things about Summer being involved with members of the first team etc.

Look it up on Twitter. It’s well known that she’s been getting creeped on.

Best thing then is to out the tweeters. Name the creeps – post their twitter addresses and let them know.

  5. Good luck to Efe

I hope hibs give him a midfield role.

You threw it into the blog as if it happened on here only later adding it happened on social media. I don’t ‘do’ twitter or Facebook. Not that I’m easily offended, I just think they’re full of t**ts.

  9. Btw, what is the current state of our record attempts?

    Unbeaten for what? – 27?

Consecutive wins – 21? Are we in line to equal the MON record v the Huns on the glorious 12th (as it will become known)?

I was at that game but wouldn’t even have remembered that we never wore hoops. strange all the same.

*I was at the game tae and my memory of it apart fae Billy’s bumper was drinking out of a bottle with no label, it was called Zimba or so the bartender in a pub under the railway bridge on the Gallowgate told us.

After Stevie equalised the Celtic end burst intae a rendition of Sean South, it was me that started it, that’s my claim tae fame anyway.

  11. Going all Apple now, iPad, iPhone and a MacBook when the current laptop dies which looks imminent as it’s started making funny noises and freezing lately, bit like me.

Well I haven’t seen any on CQN.

However, it’s a bit naive to assume all nasty comments come from huns. We have idiots in our support and we should call it when we see it.

  16. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Terrible news about Big Billy’s health . My mother is a dementia sufferer and it really is a horrible condition. Like Billy, her communication is restricted so my sympathy for Billy and his family is even greater.

    Heraghty’s had a Lisbon 20th anniversary night.

A recording of the game was on the television and Billy walked into Heraghty’s just as he was being presented with the cup on the screen. Billy was accompanied by Charlie Gallagher.

Gerry McNee was in that night, I was told he was a cousin of Charlie’s . A few minutes later, Billy noticed McNee and promptly left due to the latter’s presence . A few around me wanted McNee to leave but were persuaded not to give him any grief.

Charlie’s seat at Celtic Park is a few rows in front of mine.

He looked to have bother getting down the stairs before the Motherwell game. Last Saturday Charlie was using a walking stick . I hope his mobility issues are not the legacy of previous football injuries he suffered.

  18. Celtic frequently used the new ‘ all green strip ‘ when it was launched in the 60’s and was very much worn whenever. Unthinkable that the Hoops would be changed? – not so, the fans were very taken by the new kit. If you look back it was worn in all competitions, it was the dream for all young Celtic fans to get their hands on the legendary all green strip adorned by the Lions, and beyond.

Why can’t I get my head round Twitter? Never know who’s talking to who and wot the f are hashtag this and hashtag that. Usually get lost in links and can’t find my way back.

Need someone to sit down with me and explain it.

Delighted to learn (on my ski adventure in Austria) that everyone gets into a party mood in fancy dress and generally gets on it – as a Catholic tradition to let their hair down before 6,weeks if fasting I thought it would be rude not to join in

    Very funny.

  23. The ole Catholic Europe is definitely the place to be tonight, if you fancy a good time. They’re making for what used to be lost party/drinking time during Lent. Great craic. I had 3 years of it in the south of Holland back in the day.

Mind showing us an example of this “abuse”?

    ——

It’s well known. She closed down her twitter account due to persistent abuse, a lot of it from woman as well. Spend 5 minuted on twitter and you’ll find out there are some amount of delinquents calling themselves Celtic fans. Only the other day one of them was abusing Leigh Griffiths and his children.

  25. THETIMREAPER

We’re all at cross purposes. I thought the abuse you were referring to was on here and I read back and couldn’t find any. As I’ve said I don’t do twitter or Facebook. I personally think these are a scourge of modern life and for the life of me don’t see why anyone does. But each to their own.

  26. Bomber Brown looking very spruce and business-like in EK’s Lidl this afternoon. Couldn’t see if he tried to pay with cheque or not.

Wonder if he’s given up on our friend Murty – you’d think a man of such footballing experience would have lots to offer up in Auchenhowie, rather than shopping in south EK.

  27. Twitter has become mainly for the mindless who operate in life without the use of a demented pish filter. Facebook too, for that.

Being surprised at the levels of illiterate savage, soulless trolls on social media is like putting whisky and guns in the hands of Hun monkeys and asking incredulously, ‘What? They got violent?’.

  28. Lent starts tomorrow???? Complete forgot.

Luckily I am already on a wedding diet and am completely skint. As such, I am already living the life of an ascetic…

I wonder if St Mungo’s has one of the biggest school cliques on here ? There are definitely quite a few of us.

School cliques would make quite an interesting list if it wasn’t so boring :-)

  31. A people and a cause on

If FC Barcelona are ” more than a club”why don’t they just build a memorial to Patrick OConnell instead of having various interested fans fundraising for even a proper headstone for the great man

Where would the club be today without him?

  32. Can’t be bothered with Facebook for a variety of reasons. I have a twitter account, it’s a good tool for keeping up to speed with what’s happening in the world and is often a source for a good laugh. Type in ‘Celtic’ and if anythings happening you’ll know about it. That is what I think twitter was designed for. When you put your entire life on it you open yourself up to all kinds of vile abuse.
