Effective Nygren

160

With an eye on the Champions League game tomorrow night, Brendan Rodgers chose to mix it up against Livingston on Saturday.  The risk paid off with Benjamin Nygren lifting the champions to a comfortable 3-0 win.  An added benefit was the gametime given to those who needed it, while we got a good look at Hayato Inamura and Shin Yamada.

Nygren has now played three league games for Celtic, scored three goals, hit the crossbar and has one assist to his name.  You also get the feeling that he is only just beginning to get a feel for his teammates.  When his passes do not reach their desired destination, it is because he expected a run which did not happen.

Arne Engels’ motivation is clear to see.  The Belgium international was first choice last season, but has been left on the bench for key games this term.  His response against Livi was as good as the manager would have hoped for.

Elsewhere the big result was Tony Bloom-inspired Hearts dropping two points at home to Motherwell.  That allowed Celtic to open up a 2 point gap at the top of the table.  Early days but you would rather be 2 points ahead than behind.

  1. PB, yeah a bit of a culture shock for those of us who weren’t dispensed with initially. Every penny was a prisoner at Oracle, making incredible profits every qtr but none of them made it to the people generating the profits. It was all about market expectations and shareholder value. I regularly tried to get a pay off but they wouldn’t let me go.

Shame about Sun, people were genuinely valued there.

  2. In Glasgow for a few weeks. With the Kairat game being on Amazon Prime will there be any issues with the amount of pubs showing the game? In previous years have gone to Merchant City- O’Neill’s, Connolly’s etc. Will that still be the case with this one?

Now I’ll spend the rest of the night trying to remember the name of the Sun accounts manager, who, like me, will be well retired 😂😅🤣

  6. Lots of good Tims at Sun. 👍

I travelled a lot but when in the office there was always a good Celtic chat to be had.

Attended both games …… the Burnley riot and the 4-2. The worst of times and the best of times.

Ref Our disfunctional recruitment structure. It totally agree it is a shambles and has only got worse this past 2 seasons.

How could Ange do so well in turning something around so quickly in 2021 with great recruitment and then build on it in 2022 only for the club to do so badly from a great base since 2023 ?

I disagree with the post from Bournesouprecipe but agree with your sentiment.

Just to put the above into context.

    Grumpy gits like me …

… who advocate a 60 minute in play game

… with clock ticking on throw ins, free kicks, goal kicks

.. and play not being stopped for player injuries which are NOT the result of foul play ….

That 8pm kick off last night ?

    .. with a 15-minute half time break

.. playing to a 60 minute in play clock ?

    Would have ended at 10:42pm.

I also thought `terrible ` by Brighton but one of the replies said this:

“Not entirely accurate. He wasn’t banned because of the shirt. He was banned because you aren’t allowed to wear any football shirts in the 1901 club section of the ground, it’s the hospitality area and has a strict dress code, not even Brighton shirts are allowed. If he’d been in any other part of the stadium nothing would have happened.”

  20. Of course, tonight`s game is massively important financially but emotionally, I wonder if beating even the new version of the Huns on Sunday would be more satisfying?

Naturally, victories in both would be ideal but if you could only chose one?

Yes, my best day as a Celtic supporter. Taken in the car with my Dad & Uncle as i wasn’t allowed to go on my own. Was then allowed to attend the 80 Cup Final with my pals a year later, interesting day lol.

  24. From the Herald:

Kairat Almaty have been dealt with another injury blow ahead of the second leg of their Champions League play-off against Celtic tonight.

Brendan Rodgers and his men are in Kazakhstan for the crucial showdown, having made the lengthy trip from Glasgow on Sunday.

The teams drew 0-0 at Parkhead in the first leg last Wednesday.

For tonight’s match, Kairat will be without Brazilian striker Edmilson. ASNews.kz reports that the 28-year-old, who started last week, has been injured in training and is ‘practically’ ruled out.

Kairat were already due to have Alexander Zarutsky and Giorgi Zaria unavailable, as well as Chelsea-bound wonderkid Dastan Satpayev, who is suspended.

Brendan Rodgers says there are no excuses for Celtic not to go through: “There’s no excuse for us,” admitted the manager, when asked whether the long journey and heat could impact his side’s chances of progression.

“Especially when you see how well Kairat worked last week. They had the same journey going the other way.

“So that won’t be an excuse for us. And I think, as I said, we all feel fine, we feel great, we’re on our own time zone and like I say, we’ll prepare and there’ll be no excuse.”

  25. Quick glance at his profile would suggest he is very much a fringe player at Boca and at international level.

Made his Uruguay debut a few years back, replacing Diego Laxalf – remember him?

I get your point about how important tonight’s game SHOULD be financially, but don’t think I’m alone when I wonder if the money to be made in the CL would make a blind bit of difference to us as a football club going forward.

Or maybe I’m overlooking/missing evidence that making money in the CL transfers to making our team better through spending on better players?
