EFL makes its big play for survival

196

English Football League (EFL) chief executive, Rick Parry, yesterday made his major play to rescue the EFL from its Covid plight and restructure English as a consequence.  He co-opted Manchester United and Liverpool, where he was formerly CEO, into backing a plan that would see 25% of all future Premier League (PL) TV deals and a £250m bailout paid to the EFL, while the Premier League would be cut from 20 to 18 teams.

Parry also proposes the EFL discontinue its headline knockout competition; the League Cup, that the Community Shield game is retired, that future parachute payments to relegated PL teams stop and the Premier League pay the FA £100m to make up the Association’s shortfall.  In addition, nine PL clubs would be given enhanced voting rights on unspecified issues, based on the longevity of their stay in the Premier League.

These measures  would ensure the survival of most EFL clubs.  Money that currently goes to teams 19 and 20 in the PL and the lucrative parachute payments would be redistributed throughout the lower leagues.  All of this would solve many problems and, as the burden mainly falls on PL cannon fodder, it is no surprise Liverpool and Manchester United have signed up.

If I was chief exec at Fulham, Sheffield United, Burnley, West Brom, Brighton, Wolves, Crystal Palace, Southampton or Leeds, I would be worried about the prevailing business model.  None of these nine clubs can be sure of their long-term survival in the PL.  Four others: Newcastle, West Ham, Aston Villa and Leicester have experienced lower league football in the last decade and cannot be over-confident of remaining in the top flight forever.  That’s a lot of nervous chief execs without sufficient control over their business model.

As a consequence, I do not think the Premier League’s robust rejection of the deal will be the end of the story, at the very least, there will be horse trading in the weeks to come.  To pass, the deal will require the majority of top flight clubs to jeopardise their PL gig in return for a more stable but inconsequential existence.  It makes sense but when has that ever ruled the day in football?

Admire Parry’s attempt, though I do, it serves Celtic’s (and the rest of Scottish football’s) purpose best for the closed shop in England and Wales to avoid a soft-landing.  Alternatively, they could tear down the borders that isolate Scottish clubs from the finances of their main TV market.  Allow clubs from the same nation state to compete for income and prizes and provide a timely boost to EFL finances.

As I have said since the pandemic started, we need to keep an eye on the EFL.  Its model was economically broken beforehand and was never going to survive these times.  It we ever see structural change to our national league systems, these exact conditions are necessary.

We can always hope.

You wont get any argument from me.

I have been aware of the ‘true’ situation since post easter but I refrain from publishing my views on here because it is too easy offend people who are believing their government till the end.

Just watched the latest sham presser from the PM and his team of billionaires, millionaires, liars and corrupt jurnalists acting off their pre planned question script.

Did you notice how the lady who asked the long question that we never heard a word of because the signal was buffering all the way through got a 100% complete and detailed answer from the full PM team?

    How was that possible then?

The whole thing is a publicity stunt sham

Agree about your thoughts on those players

Ffs we play the sheep away on 25th as well.

    D :)

Yeah David66, we play the Sheep @ the Dunghill on the 25/10/20 & then we play the

Sheep again, @ Hampden the following Sunday 1/11/20 in the Scottish Cup Semi Final

from Season 2019/20. & If my memory serves Me well, I think we play AC Milan Away,

in the Europa League Group Stages, on Thursday the 29/10/20, which is inbetween the

said two said Sheep matches, so the potential banana skins are coming thick & fast.

Don’t worry, wee Lenny will guide us over those tricky hurdles, I’m sure he will.

  4. The National Basketball League in the US managed to play in a bubble for 3 months and not a single positive diagnosis. Celtic’s bubble was 2 months and even allowing for one man’s madness, not a single positive outcome.

    Kiddy-on internationals……. get them tae @*#•

  5. Adi…

    I know.

I’d play him in the way we did at Perth but Neil will start him and make it easy to disrupt us in the middle of the park – again.

  6. Get Duffy, Ajer and CalMac back and I’d be happy enough at this stage.

Biggest worry atm is Duffy. Ireland camp is all over the place with the covid tests.

    El Hamed wouldn’t have started.

    Bitton wouldn’t have started.

Christie & Forrest haven’t performed in this fixture.

    —————————

I think Lenny would’ve started either of Bitton or ElHamed in place of Jullien.

And Christie would’ve also got a start, IMO.

Lenny likes going with players he trusts.

  8. I’d echo the guy earlier that spoke about Christie and Forrest playing poorly against them last time out.

With their inevitable high press and ‘robust’ tackling – we need players that keep the ball well. Ntcham over Christie all day long for me in this game.

Lennon’s team selection has been made much more simple for him.

  9. The_Huddle

I don’t see Lenny having a problem with Julien. He has played him constantly when the 2 others were available.

He likes Christie as he likes that movement (ill-disciplined at times) around the field.

The Huns are no world-beaters but I worry that our ill-disciplined, jazz-like formations play into their hands.

I’m hoping their talk about Lenny’s lack of tactical nouse sparks a positive reaction. That Beale fecker is an arrogant tosser who needs knocked down a peg or two. Gerrard is clueless.

  10. AKBW – I have every faith in him

    vs St J

    86% of passes went forwaed

Successful pass into final third every 2.5 minutes. Next best was McGregor every 5.5 minutes

As many passes into final third as Ntcham who stated and more than Christie/Moi/Turnbull

When Brown came on the entire Celtic team pushed up by 8 yards.

When he was coming on the manager gave Scott Brown explicit instructions.

    – get other players going

    – move the ball forward

    – get the team further up the pitch

HOT SMOKED on 12TH OCTOBER 2020 5:25 PM

Wondering if there was a team anywhere in the world abreviated to BGFC, I Googled. Came up with this:

    Bidford Gliding & Flying Club

    ______

Doors to automatic and chocks away!!

    HH

    BGFC

  19. DD, I agree.

Brooney absolutely must start and i would love to see Diego Laxalt start as well.

Maybe the missing ghuy’s wouldn’t have started but they would have been on the bench and be available if & when needed.

So their absence might still hurt us, however it is was it is, I’m still confident we will win, but I sincerely hope there are no more casualties from the midweek games

Duffy has already played 120 minutes last Thursday, 90 minutes yesterday and a further 90 to come on Wed. plus travel to & from Slovakia & Finland.

    Utter madness,

  20. DELANEYS DUNKY on 12TH OCTOBER 2020 8:19 PM

Second name on teamsheet for Saturday should be Diego Laxalt.

Yeah, I would like to see that as well.

If it was MON, he would put him straight into the Team.

Because Greg Taylor, was ineffective in his last outing.

So it makes sense, to go with Diego Laxalt.

I would also play Frimpong, he brings a lot of Flair to our

style of play, the young Frimpong, just needs to be more

direct in his play, & make the correct decisions, when he

is on the ball, ie:- is it better to pick out a pass, or do I

have a dig, (shoot) go on the young Frimpong.

  21. Ref RB Salzburg, they had 3 positive test results which, according to Austrian FA protocol, meant that whole team had to self isolate meaning that they could not join international teams.

Although Celtic cannot stop players playing international matches, the players themselves can choose not to play if they wish. Wrong target for the snipers.

  22. THE HAND OF GOD- strangely, it might make team selection a bit simpler….sometimes too many options can be a problem

  23. I agree. I’m not blaming the players. Just saying Celtic are not to blame for players playing internationals.

  24. It depends how Laxalt trains but my guess is he will be on the bench. Forrest and Christie tend to go missing in these games so no great loss and I’m not sure Bitton or Hatem would have started. Hatem was the more likely. Edouard might make the bench and give you a boost but ultimately the team wont be that badly affected. Of course Neil may play to a narrative that we’re depleted to get a psychological edge. The game will be won or lost in the shape of the team and in the battle for the midfield area. Ntcham will get the nod along with Brown and Cal. Mo and Ajeti will probably lead the line but i wouldn’t rule out Klimala playing from the start. The team shape needs to be tighter and everyone needs to dig in and win their individual battles. Do the basics first and foremost, something we failed to do in the past two meetings against this opponent.
