Eight Celts with World Cup hopes

161

Really pleased for Tony Ralston, who along with Kieran Tierney, is included in the Scotland squad for the World Cup.  Also going are Benjamin Nygren (Sweden), Sebastian Tounekti (Tunisia), Daizen Maeda (Japan) and Yang (Korea).

The USA squad has not been confirmed yet, so Auston Trusty can still hope to travel to his home country’s tournament.  Mexico have also yet to announce their final squad, but Julian Araujo made the preliminary list.  If Julian makes it (and we include him as a Celtic player) that could be eight Celtic players at World Cup 2026.

Unsurprisingly, that’s the most since the last time Scotland qualified in 1998, when 10 Celtic players were in France for the tournament.  Four Celtic players were in Qatar in 2022, can you name them?  Two are easy, one is very gettable, but there’s one I think will challenge a few of you.

  1. The 1966 World Cup Final between England and Germany featured a notable incident where people entered the pitch during the closing moments of the game. This situation was allowed to continue without interruption for a specific reason.

    Gottfried Dienst’s Decision

Referee’s Concentration: Gottfried Dienst, the Swiss referee officiating the match, was focused on the play and did not stop the game despite the crowd’s intrusion.

Key Moment: The incident coincided with Geoff Hurst’s famous goal, which ultimately contributed to England’s victory.

    Impact of the Incident

Historical Significance: This moment has become a memorable part of World Cup history, illustrating the chaotic nature of the final moments of a high-stakes match.

Public Reaction: The goal scored during this interruption has been widely discussed and remains a topic of debate regarding its legitimacy.

The combination of the referee’s focus and the dramatic nature of the match allowed the game to conclude without halting play, leading to England’s historic win.

Surely the most famous/infamous pitch invasion of all time is forever captured in the words of Kenneth Wolstenholme. ‘Some people are on the pitch, they think it’s all over’, and as the England forward Geoff Hurst scores the final goal, he concludes, ‘It is now!’

*Or the infamous Barca invasion after Dynamo pulled a second back and were pummelling them “they want it to be over” and then stated they were trying tae emulate us at Lisbon 5 years before

I thought that too at the time. He was raging as much as McInnes, and so I assumed he wasn’t coming to us.

Not sure it’s a great loss. A good coach, no doubt. But untested at a big club or in Europe, Wish him well though. He could do well in France.

  10. That’s Motherwell back to being a ,Meh team.Sad really. If he kept that team together, couple of additions, which he seems very good at,could have been a top three team.He lost the first couple of months getting them up to speed with his system.

I liked him.Motherwell a lovely watch. He will be sorely missed. Now he has to start again.

  11. Well, when you compare Askou to the guy Nicholson thought was a terrific manager,Nancy,it does not bode well.

Who else will choose? It will be those fekin idiots to decide again.

  14. Probably Keane. I also wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Maloney and Fozzy, with Martin as DoF. I really hope not. Martin has done brilliantly, but he’s not the future. We need a young, modern coach with a good scouting network. Maloney doesn’t have the presence for the job, in my view.

    So…. what a few days we’ve had.

Two Rangers supporters were given the VAR job on Wednesday. Both agreed that it was a penalty to Celtic.

If there had been a crumb of possibility, they would have come up with ‘not conclusive’.

And all of a sudden, McInnes was screaming and throwing the toys in all directions.

Fast forward to Saturday/Sunday/Monday/ Tuesday/ and a bit of Wednesday….

Why am I focused on these days? Well, these were the days that they would have produced the evidence….

Evidence of beatings, thuggery and other bad things perpetuated on their team.

If ANY evidence was available it would have been on all these tv channels to which they had blabbered to regarding Wednesday.

    Nothing.

    The vacuum is still empty…

Enough of this. We have a Cup Final to win.

    Cheers,

    Weeron.

Who’ll put out the Celtic fires when auld MON decides that he needs to go to bed early at night and a 2 day week would be just to much of a stretch?

We would already have had the league trophy stripped from our clutches had auld MON not been in the building, and McInnis would be like a tripping oot his heid version Jack Nicholson from ‘one flew over’ on top of the Jambos tour of Scotland bus, trophy parade which would be live on every mainstream media channel with a banner on the bottom of the screen saying “GIRUYT HA HA HA”and “CRY MORE CELTIC” and “EVERY DAY IS THE 12 TH OF JULY” etc, etc.

That would be before the Jambos Special Holiday’s of Obligation from honest John Swinney with his new Jambos Tartan kilt, with thanks from 99% of Bonny Scotland.
