Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

  1. Livibhoy – Agreed i’d like to see a better quality player brought in, we had enough deadwood over the years and i wonder if the policy at present if tweaked would provide this. We can gamble on more players making it in the £1-2m bracket, but what might the £3-4m get us in terms of very experienced prospects whose wages might be low. With Europe in tough economic times and the prudent running of the club then we should be exploiting this for our own ends.

I don’t think CF proves any complicity by our club. It certainly heightens my suspicions though.

That is why your resolution at the AGM is so important.

I will be issuing the resolution tonight, hopefully the final draft.

Charlotte’s made it clear for me our board were involved, the “four” who think they are bigger and better than the rest of the teams makes that very clear.

  20. The Honest Cover-up on

Haven’t read back yet but is anyone else a bit miffed that there is no clause to prevent Bangura playing? I know he has looked useless in the hoops but that is beside the point. We now face a tricky tie against the Swedish Champions with a striker who will be desperate to prove his many doubters wrong.

The away tie will be in a packed ground in a country where Bangura clearly feels at home. In a Brattbakk for Copenhagen way the script is almost written for him to cause us problems. Even if he doesn’t score he could injure a player of ours or win a penalty etc. He simply shouldn’t be lining up against us.

I read on twitter people saying “no one could have predicted we’d draw them”. Well actually, it’s not that surprising we’ve drawn the Swedish champions. It happened last year too!

We now have the ridiculous situation of Neil Lennon saying in his press conference that he will advise Bangura not to play. Bangura would be well within his rights to politely tell him to get stuffed. He has been shipped out because we deem him not to be good enough and he has the chance to play in a Champion’s League qualifier, one of the biggest games in his career. Why should he sit out?

I know there have been all sorts of jokes about clauses insisting he DOES play amg I don’t honestly see it becoming a big problem but I’m amazed a clause isn’t in every loan deal to prevent this. Lesson should be learned.

a Headline on Newsnow when searching under rangers –

Man dies when alledgedly being tortured by Rangers

Yes Rangers are torture, but isnt it Rangers who are dead !

  22. Canamalar1, i haven’t read the Charlottes tweets and must do so, im not as well read on these things as yourself. I am probably in the minority of one. Anyway i’ll put on my hard hat now, i am glad they went bust and in terms of starting again in the bottom league then fair enough, if they do the time for the crime that good enough for me. They will take at least 3 years to reach the spl (lost their first team for nothing £20m+ gone in a TUPE) and longer to win the league. In that time more than our fathers & forefathers we have “seen them off” the tribute act is as weak as it could be and from last years results has a long , long way to go. In reaching the spl (if they don’t go bust in the meantime) they will need significant investment to compete with us. The money wont come from the fans, the “city investors” will be nervous and the current changes this week and skulduggery won’t help this, clubs selling players will want money up front will they not? so they are left looking for a sugar daddy where did that leave them the last time!!!

I think the overall product of the spl is poor, not our fault but i can’t see a European league or us joining the english set up. If we did we’d be in the bottom working our way up just like newco. Do i want to miss out on the CL? No the biggest show in town and most lucrative a great shop window for the club, its players but also for its promotion around the globe and we the fans are a huge part of that. I welcome the chase and one thing reaffirmed it for me was the last day of the season before we got the trophy i saw people walking out before the presentation, would this have happened in previous years?

I remember speaking to my brothers about how bad the 90’s were when they were stronger on and off the pitch, i’d have given anything to see us win a league title. Who can forget stopping 10 in a row, in our new stadium in the sun how did it feel for you?

So to sum it up I enjoy watching them squirming on their journey and watching “the peepil ” get weaker as we leave them in our slipstream. I loved beating Rangers and look forward to beating “the the Rangers ” when the time comes!!!

Totally agree 100%. if true, then total amateurism from Celtic. These agreements should include clauses like that as standard.
