Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

Talking to a hun who organises fundraisers etc for the Fighting Fund and book launches and the like. One hun who he doesn’t ask anymore is a recent ex captain who lives in the US.He wants paid for everything, including an event on the day the huns died.Roxburgh’s best mate :)

How stupid would we look if Bangura contributed to our CL exit? Can’t possibly happen.

  3. Bada Bing, not surprising he was always out for himself, would be great if he took over from steak bake!!!

  4. The Honest Cover-up on

I don’t think it’s always as easy as just recalling a loaned out player. These loan deals are contracts for 6 months or a year are they not? I’m sure the club gaining loan of a player has rights too.

  5. Paolosboots,

Your argument started with an MSM lie and went downhill as it progressed

It was not “fair enough” that they start at the bottom of the professional set up, they did not qualify to start there, other teams who did qualify were cheated out of that place.

It wasn’t that long ago we could not see a way back, look at us now eh.

Looking forward to playing their offspring has got to be the saddest thing I’ve seen written.

I want them eradicated and recognised for the national disgrace they were.

I want everyone of their enablers out of the game and identified as corrupt and if that stench has found it’s way into our club then the sooner the better.

I’ve not seen anything powerful about Bangura. He is small, has a dreadful touch and couldn’t hit a barn door. Having said that, he wouldn’t be the first diddy to cause our defence problems! Ridiculous state I’d affairs that no one at Celtic had the foresight to insert a clause into his loan deal preventing him from playing.

Reading those posts on FF, its not surprising that the spivs find it so easy to rip off the zombies. But there are many among them who can read and count; those are the ones we should be wary of.

It’s incidental anyway. If we are concerned about a player who few rated, and most were happy to see the back of,then we’ve upped the paranoia level to defeatism.

Delighted to read of your good news. Will be rooting for you the rest of the way.

Disagree re Kayal, though. I don’t think he is nearly good enough, and for a midfielder, can’t tackle.

    Just my 2 cents….

  14. Canalamar1 i admire your indefatigability in search of justice for Celtic and all the other clubs cheated out of what was rightfully theirs (Paul67 provided figures not so long ago). I don’t think you will get to see it, football is one of the most corrupt sports and when you look at UEFA & FIFA the games abogey as they say. I think what happened to Rangers in spite of their cheating was not expected, and most fans would agree that it was staggering they were sent to the bottom tier ( yes more deserving clubs could have been allowed to join but its all about the money. I think its naive to see it any other way. I expected a fine or a small points deduction not for them to start in the bottom tier so i’m relatively happy with that as my own club moves ahead and gains prestige on the continent. I love my team for its more than a team to me and I am sorry that in all the years you have been posting that mine is the saddest thing you have seen!

Maybe if you are out one of these nights i can buy you a pint as i wouldn’t want it on my conscience that i upset you.

  15. Auldheid,

    Found it

We the undersigned have concerns that should be addressed by our board, being the legal representatives responsible to protect our interests.

Recent information made public has raised concerns about the integrity of governance in the market we operate, specifically on the following issues

    1. Qualification and issuance of license to operate.

    2. Secret cross governance agreements contrary to incumbent transparency requirements.

    3. Unprecedented transfer of membership to a new entity, which facilitated queue jumping into the lower professional set-up

    4. Participation in domestic competition without proper registration compliance

    5. The participation of the governing body at an inquiry which they were the appellate authority.

These are serious concerns which have not been allayed by any subsequent statements or actions designed to placate, on the contrary they have created a deeper mistrust of those charged with the administration of the rules fundamental to the integrity of the sports governance, to the extent that many believe our club have been financially disadvantaged, through decisions made by those trusted with the governance of our game.

Will the board join us in calling for a full investigation by UEFA into the administration of compliance qualification and implementation by the SFA?

If not can the board inform the shareholders within 1 month of this resolution in writing, why they have discounted such an investigation?

I think there are a few potentiall contentious issues I am looking to remove, I’m also still looking for the exact clause Gregory Loannidis was referring to when he said every UEFA associated club can request compliance investigation as I suspect it will be asked for when the proposal is submitted.

Watsons call for review of his own dismissal was truly selfish and probably cost Clarks wicket who may well haev survived on appeal.

This is without doubt the worst Austalian batting line up in my memory.

  18. Paolosboots,

It’s sad to see a Tim looking forward to playing anything of their ilk again, it was not a dig and I’ll happily share some beer with you, I just think that accepting corruption is a sad state of affairs, naive or no.

My take on it is in his current situation it wouldn’t be a good idea.

  23. Canamalar1, its the way of the world i’m afraid, i will be 100% behind you if you get what you want from what you are trying to achieve. I do admire you doggedness in relation to this issue and the hard work that has gone on and is going on to get answers. I have just come from the school of hard knocks where you can do the right thing, go down the right path for justice, get justice and still get screwed!!!

However without people like you complacency would set in and our club would be all the poorer for it, if that makes sense!

    I reckon I could take him ;-)

I don’t see it as paranoia or defeatism. Lennon has said he’ll ask Bangura not to play. I think it’s a bit embarrassing that it has come to that. We are effectively saying to Elfsborg, “listen lads, we forgot to put a clause in so gonna not play Mo as we’ll look a right bunch of dafties if he scores against us!”.

Asking Mo not to play is just as bad, “Mo, I know we said you weren’t good enough for us but please sit this one out or if you do play don’t try too hard and make us look like idiots for forgetting to insert that clause”.

There are millions of pounds at stake here.

I agree we should take care of Elfsborg with or without Mohammed Bangura in their team but my point is we shouldn’t have to worry about him playing. From the sounds of his press conference Lennon agrees. I hope someone in the contracts dept gets a good talking to tonight.
