Elite thinking and game management the difference

196

For much of the first half, I thought Newco played well against the champions. In the opening 30 minutes Celtic only created one clear-cut chance, a crisp movement which presented Kyogo with millisecond to fire a shot at goal from 8 yards, which went straight at Butland.

In return, Fabio Silva had a shot from a tight angle which went narrowly wide and really should have got a free header on target. The much-maligned loanee was key to much of what worked for Newco during that period.

Shots peppered in from Celtic.  Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, James Forrest and, of course, Matt O’Riley all tried their luck from around the edge of the area (or further out, in the case of Reo).  It was a controlled finish from O’Riley from 16 yards which burst the game into life.

James Tavernier needlessly gave away possession deep inside the Celtic half.  It was an unforced mis-pass but not a culpable one.  Even the greats don’t always find their target destination. What then happened explains the difference between these two closely matched teams.

Callum McGregor ran past three Newco players into space down the Celtic right. He then spun 270° to see Matt O’Riley run past the same players into an unlikely empty space inside the Newco box.

It was a lesson on the dangers of ball watching, although O’Riley in particular deserves credit.  His run was tracked by Barisic, until O’Riley figured this out and checked his run.  Matt had already narrowly missed the target at Butland’s left twice but on this occasion found the bottom corner of the net to give Celtic the lead.

Newco match Celtic in so many areas and even spend more on player wages, but a few seconds in a game where elite level thinking comes up against standard grade grunts is all it takes to decide the outcome of a season.

Tavernier escapes too much criticism for the first goal but he was wholly culpable for the second. Cameron Carter-Vickers epic pass to Daizen Maeda was controlled expertly. Tavernier ambled towards play, giving Daizen time to get the ball under control and get a run on the defender.

His cross was met by the unfortunate Lundstram. Like Tavernier three minutes earlier this was just an unfortunate mistake, but Lundstram was one of the four statues McGregor and O’Riley waltzed around for the opener, and his afternoon was about to get a lot worse.

That should have been that but the old adage, the most dangerous time is just after you’ve scored a goal, came true. Alistair Johnston was isolated facing Silva and Barisic on the right, the latter pitched a cross at the back post for Sterling to head back into the six-yard box. It was a well worked goal, Celtic’s mistake was allowing Johnston to be isolated.

My pre-match prediction that Silva and Cantwell would be carded missed the mark, the former behaved himself and the latter spent the afternoon getting his tints done. Spotting a vacancy, Lundstram lunged into Alistair Johnston’s shin with studs up. Referee Willie Column missed the severity of the challenge in real time but VAR interceded and the first half ended with the red card waving at Newco’s midfield enforcer.

The better teams don’t always win at football because chance conversion is relatively low and occurs randomly. This was the only real danger to Celtic in the second period. They should have increased their lead. Adam Idah shot wide and on another occasion didn’t see the ball until it was too late.

Daizen Maeda could easily have remained onside and in acres of space for the second of his two goals disallowed for offside.  Nicolas Kuhn’s mazy run past two defenders deserved better and goodness, what price a reliable penalty taker!

In return, Newco threw the kitchen sink at Celtic but were unable to craft an attempt on target. Those of us who remember the 80s, with our perma-attack tactics and the memorable occasions when we lost a late equaliser chasing a goal we didn’t need, were happy to see all those green and white jerseys protecting Joe Hart’s goal.  Game management won out.

The final whistle was a genuinely joyous moment. The title is not concluded yet and the consequences of what has happened this season will take years to unfold. All for another day!

  1. Rangers may have been poor but their form and results apart from games vs Celtic would have had them win the league comfortably.

They spent pretty big and paid very big. They showed you can spend on oven ready players and still not be sure to get much success.

Both sides had transitions in terms of management to cope with. Arguably ours was greater.

Winning and dominating in Scotland requires being smart and knowing the terrain. Not just spend spend on whoever will come here at whatever stage of their careers.

celtic 39 goals and conceded 12.

In 1,530 minuters they trailed for 108.

Celtic have scored first in 11 of the ast 12 games.

    played 17, won 13, drawn 3, loat just 1.

The huns are their own worst enemy and our biggest ally. They refuse to accept they are up against a formidable adversary and succumb to their own misplaced fantasies of greatness. If they faced the world as it is and concentrated on their own formidable resources (fan base, income sources, referees, SFA, media) they could provide a real threat to us.

Instead they tell themselves the same comforting lies and repeat the same self-defeating mistakes. Long may it continue. By our own standards we have been poor for most of the season but they still couldn’t live with us. Rodgers takes immense credit for this title.

Comparing Celtic with Sevco is ‘disrespectful’.

  6. i am watching the game again. for the umpteenth time.

    the penalty,

matt is clearly looking to get a shot away as he is looking at ball and the goal as he lifts his legto swing at the ball.

the new common theme is 2he sruck his leg off the defenders foot, what utter nonsense. soft penalty, no, a defiante penalty yes.

  7. My stream cut out just after the final whistle.

Did the huns do another ‘Glasgow Derby lap of honour’?

Seems as valid a time to do so as their last one.

Not sure if this is a veiled dig at Brendan, whom he loathes so much its palpable, surely it cant be a dig at the recruitment of our players, surely not, hope Peter doesnt find out.

For all the great P67, and he’s entitled to his opinion, does, he does himself little credit when it comes to the manager, spurned teenage crush vibes.

In saying that, lets all celebrate on Wednesday when we vanquish the Ayrshire Huns. Wouldnt it be great for McInnes if we’ve won the league by Wednesday and they are asked to do a guard of honour.

Fulham I don’t know, but Man City now sell their academy players for sums that are way beyond our means. As do most of the top elite teams.

The Championship, Div 1 and 2 are more likely for finding rough gems like Matt O’Riley,

also, there are a few Scottish players worth a punt, if Italian clubs think they can do it, Hickey, Ferguson, Hendersons, then so should we, por cierto.

Of course you’re right, Sarurday, not, Sunday – I stand corrected….then we re-catch in time for the 25th(not making the same mistake again). Cheers & HH.

  15. As EKBHOY @ 12:23 put it , we were playing against “‘ Big lads that run about “, ie brawn. And as Paul67 says we had the brains to win the game in our management of events. Brawn cannot be kept in a bottle too long and Lundstrum had a shocking tackle even worse than Souness against Billy Stark at Celtic Park. Thank you for the wage packet info HRVATSKI JIM , Incredible salaries for seven of those players! All or bust economics as Paul67 has oft told us. We need to do everything to keep Matt O’Riley, he can be Celtic’s next captain, maybe we need to get him a nice burd in Glasgow, whatever, he is a wonderful player. And yes a shout out to Coatbridge’s very own Tony Ralston, like Willie O’Neill’s goal line clearance in the League Cup Final of 1966 his intervention was vital. We are a team.

  16. The game went more or less as I expected played on a superb surface and balmy summer heat all conjusive to the kind of football we like to see the Hoops play. I was confident once the attack got a good supply of ball Rangers were always going to have the jitters as in previous games.

There are still a couple of games to go and when Celtic clinch the title there is a nice crock of gold thanks to EUFA heading for the Celtic Park coffers, direct to the CL group stage and a proper close season and time to recruit some reinforcements.

Joe Hart incredibly didn’t have to make one save and i thought the back four were excellent under that second half aerial bombardement, Tony Ralston dis not let the side down when called upon in the second half.

Conceding another headed goal against an attacker with height superiority the one downside.

Kenny Millar? let’s hope he has no thoughts of becoming a ref. in the future.

Great to see Calmac back to his brilliant best and James Forrest another academy graduate thrive in the red hot atmosphere of another derby game. Daizen , what is left to say about this little dynamo – magic.

When the going is rough, well you must be tough

    With Mcgregors fuseliers.

  17. Forgot to mention Matt’s terrific goal and being a constant menace to the Rangers defence, a guy who thrives on the big occasion,

  18. Who is propping up Sevco with the money they seemed to be paying to there players, personally I think it’s all lies ,they like to be top dog, better stadium ,same with there training centre ,whom I believe they rent it out from Jordanhill College ,so I tend not to believe what the media print about them,

  19. i felt the same about this during the game, i then talked myself round into maybe i just dont know the rules anymore –

as a ps, catching up on super scoreboard sat phone in just for the fun bits, however, not for the first time, keevins once again stated that abada was driven out the club by the green brigade, call him out celtic ceo.

If the above turns out to be the case, then the odds below ( William Hill ) seem rather strange.

    Rangers 1/10: v Dundee 18/1

  27. So

on construction matters, having seen the pictures for barrowfield, and seeing a comment from Phil that Sports Science and Analytics, and Medical departemnts are moving from South Stand I followed up with a more detailed look at the proposals for Barrowfield and Lennoxtown.

So think of it as a Master Plan over 3 sites with a timeline of 5 years.

A jigsaw but all very feasible.

These day to day activities move out , allowing more corporate spaces in the main south stand.

The ground floor and access ways for sure.

An idea might be corporate boxes on top of the main stand rather than more seats, but also the chance to expans in the south west and east stands, new top tiers.

We are more likely (with cost constraints) to build something akin to Fulham or Palace than we are a Liverpool type over arching constructions,

    lets see,

    the money needs spent somehow.

  28. One side issue from the weekend was when AJ went off big Tone looked ready to steam into wee Fabio , aforementioned wee Fabio essentially sprinted off the pitch when the board went up just after , not surprisingly!

I didn’t get to watch the game as my high School boys were playing in the state championship at 9am, and I was a designated driver with my wife, and two other teachers. Anyhoo, we got to the stadium at 8:20 and I immediately pulled oot the phone. My wife says what are you doing, I thought you were going to wait and watch without knowing later on???? I said I can’t do it so I opened the phone and saw that we were 2-1 up in the 90th minute but that there were 7 minutes still to be played. I hightailed it over to the bench and as the boys were warming up I finally checked and it was FT. I called another scottish coach and started singing oh the Rangers are shite, and the boys all looked over and the coach said well I guess Celtic beat the rangers!!! My bhoys, I coach the girls but coached the bhoys for 19 years, went on and won their 7th Alabama state championship. I drove home as happy as a fenian lark:)))))
