Embarrassment for the guys at Newco who have to sign up to this guff

518

PSG were wonderful last night. They served up a great night of European football as we witness what may be the end of the greatest team of all time.

Mark Warburton fired his opening salvo against Newco with a joint statement with Davie Weir and Frank McParland issued through the League Managers’ Association today:

“We would like to formally place on record, that at no stage did we resign from our positions at Rangers.

“It is a matter of surprise to us, and to the League Managers Association, which is advising all three of us, that despite its detailed public statements, the club has not answered key questions put to it by the LMA, in writing, requesting an explanation of why it suggested that we resigned from our positions.”

I’m cringing with embarrassment on behalf of the guys at Newco who have to sign up to this guff, Stewart Robertson in particular, who has titular hands on the wheel but must feel like a hostage to fortune. This is not how he ran things at Motherwell.

More lawyers’ fees, more reputational damage, less chance of a credible future.

  1. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

    Afternoon All.

    A couple of observations.

There was a lot of discussion yesterday about “Administration” day and I suppose that was to be expected.

However, that team, club, entity is not my team and, in my humble opinion, whatever they are or whatever they are called they will be forever in the shadow of my team.

Now, when i say that I mean no disrespect to supporters of any other club but my trip to Lisbon has simply reinforced my opinion of how we are regarded in Europe and how and where we should position ourselves.

It may well be that Lisbon, in particular, has good reason to have a soft spot for Celtic but when you check the footballing records, one table at least puts us as amongst the top 14 greatest and most successful clubs in Europe going by our record on the premier European competition.

We rank higher than the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, Valencia, Marseille, Arsenal, PSV, Feyenoord, Atletico Madrid, Red Star, Hamburg and many many others. Even if PSG go on to win the cup this year they will only get on to the board and still be ranked below us.

Of those who rank above us, at least one will never see European Football again in my lifetime (Forrest) and I would fancy our current team’s chances against the current versions of Ajax, AC Milan, and our old foes Inter.

The serial court appearance team features precisely nowhere!

Many thought that 12th February 2012 was the end of an era (and it was) but, in actual fact, the date has a far greater significance as the start of one.

Whether it be through the management of Murray, White, Duff & Phelps, Green, King & Co or whoever or whatever comes next you are witnessing the seemingly unstoppable downward spiral of a business and a means of trade which falters at every administrative and financial step.

It is a business that cannot be managed. It lacks cash resources, managerial vision, administrative competence and true entrepreneurial vision.

Other than the employees, there is no one at Ibrox who is making any kind of return from an investment. There are no 6% interest loans being paid, no dividends being declared, no appreciation in the value of assets (whether they be bricks and mortar, land values or playing staff values) and nothing which in my opinion makes an investor hot under the caller and keen to come steaming in with cash in the belief that there is a profit to be made.

That is a very different vista from the ones enjoyed by Ann Budge, The Milnes of Aberdeen, Roy McGregor at Ross County, Leann Dempster at Hibs and the ever excellent Browns at St Johnstone who really know how to run a football club even if it is a small one.

In business terms, turnover is vanity, profit is sanity and those who worship at the feet of the vainglorious actors who run, and have run, the Ibrox business will always be doomed to disappointment both in terms of true football achievement and in business.

To those who will say there will always be a Rangers of some sort I can only say that if things continue in the current mould than I believe you will be proven wrong. I would also point out that at one time it was unthinkable that the great financial institutions, advertising agencies, early PR firms, Manufacturers and other worldwide organisations would allow a world giant in the retail business to simply disappear forever.

Many of their former shops are there and can still be recognised as have the hallmark traits and architecture of a once world famous brand.

Alas the name “Woolworths” is to be found precisely nowhere.

Instead we have poundland, pounstretcher, Aldi, Lidl and all sorts of other “diddy” businesses in comparison to what once was Woolies.

The retail trade did not die when Woolworths did, other organisations – run by smarter people and with a preference for their own brand as opposed to trying to rescue a dying one – flourished and prospered.

There is every prospect that this is what will happen here. Unthinkable perhaps, but a very real reality nonetheless.

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————————-

    Good for PSG.

For me the shine has gone off the Barcelona diamond somewhat. I love the city and its people, and I have occasionally loved the football served up by the team that wears those colours.

However, in recent years the Barcelona management have had to stoop to all sorts of low levels to gain an advantage in footballing terms and if they were anyone else there would be outrage.

In many ways I will always prefer them over “Franco’s” Madrid but not of they are going to get into the grubber and ensconce themselves in the dirt in an attempt to benefit in ways that the Valencias, Bilbaos, Santanders and Celtas won’t and are not allowed to.

I think they will start to struggle to retain Lionel, the wee Brazilian diver and the talented gnasher and intheor absence their star will fall. I think they already struggle to get in some of the newer stars on the scene and there will be big cash competition from China and elsewhere.

If PSG play the way they did last night, then they would be worthy footballing successors to the Lions and the true spirit and meaning of Football Champions of Europe.

Volunteers eh? Who came up with that name?

Unless they find a suitable alternative, can’t imagine too many Gullibillys……err volunteering to be a volunteer.

Wonder if they’ll have uniforms, degrees and batons?

NOT SUPPLIED BY THE SAME CLUB OF COURSE.

They are desperate, that’s what it seems like, being run on a shoestring and still desperate to cut costs mmmmmmmm

  3. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on 15TH FEBRUARY 2017 1:59 PM

It’s the sort of thing you’d expect of a wee community club like Falkirk. A quick pop into RM suggests they haven’t picked up on it yet, but it’s got to be a riddy for them.

  4. So is it the Club or the Company that are looking for these volunteers? I think we should be told.

  5. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Re CEO Robertson, or anyone else who finds themselves in a similar position.

Once you sup from the masonic spoon, they have you for life.

Renege on them and they break you professionally and socially.

They don’t do walking away. They dispense with you, at their convenience.

Evidence of this is the almost complete lack of negative comments from anyone who has left their employment.

Ralph Brand did comment adversely and he disappeared of the face of the earth for years.

  6. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Good article Paul.

Some years ago, prior to liquidation one, I posted a piece of dialogue from Goodfellas,

“You take a 200 dollar bottle of scotch in the front door and you sell it for a hundred dollars at the back door ….. who cares, its all profit, nobody is paying for it …. and, when you can’t borrow another cent, YOU TORCH THE PLACE”

Stuck record time – hope our board has a plan for recovering ticket money for their sales of next league match.

They are heading for admin owing us a six figure sum.

    Hail hail

  7. So in a nutshell, the scum can no longer afford stewards, they call for volunteers, non licensed volunteers, another illegal scam, ffs this mob have no bounds.

  8. AULDHEID,

I was going to mention the Donald Sutherland line about “the negative waves” yesterday but forgot about it. Was how I felt about a lot of the posts on a day when we should have been enjoying the demise of the team fae Govan. Thought there had to be a troll or 2 at work in deflecting our attention.

  9. Well, all this Ibroxian Trumpery might lead to Ozymandias Rangers…

But let’s face it,it’s a while since a manager left Scotland for a decent job.

  12. Petec

Apologies for my part in our wee disagreement last night. I was initially trying to be funny but it obviously didn’t come across to you in that manner.

  13. BRTH,

Congratulations on an excellent post. I so wish that I had your eloquence and your ptecision of language. The number one rule for postings on a blog should be clearly communicating the message. You have that in spades.

Now that I have your attention, I fear that you have neglected one key factor in your prediction of the demise of “rangers” et al. This factor is also present in the business examples that you cite. Ultimately it is not about the organisation, or not solely about the organisation, it is chiefly about the consumer. If there is a need or even just a want from the latter, it will be served by some entity. There is a need/want for the baser aspects of following “rangers”. It is a substantial need and it will find an outlet somehow. There will be those who want service these needs and will see profit in it. That is why I am firmly in the camp that believes that a “rangers” type entity will be with us in the near and medium term future. I am not pleased to see this but it is a sad cultural factor of our society, and culture changes very slowly.

Several times in the last few years I have come close to giving up the supporting game because of this group of “fans” and the institution that they both create and are served by. Even this year with all of our beautiful football, I sometimes feel, “what is the point? The system is corrupt!” I may still chuck it because of this but I am not sure that I can handle the withdrawal symptoms.

Embarrassing in the extreme for the employees I would imagine and I can see Park taking the total hump just shortly if he has not already.

I had a bluenose friend tell me this morning they’re bringing in De Boer with the cream of Dutch talent to follow, their fans keep on lapping this stuff up until season ticket time rolls around:))

It would now suit their purpose if Celtic were to move to the EPL.

  16. One final thing since I am in ranting mood. Am I the only one who feels sorry for the ordinary sevco fan that genuinely supports their team as a football entity and not as a vehicle for hate? They do exist. These are the ones who should supported and encouraged to do something about the state of their support. The most effective means of change should come through them but I see no evidence of even the beginnings of that occuring.

Off out to shovel two feet of snow. So I shall be slow to respond, if there is interest in my musings.

Starry Plough, King is a walloper. No other description comes close. A brute of a man who doesn’t have the long-term good of the club at heart. The grapevine tells me Park’s pockets are no longer available for this months bail-out so he may be next on the hit-list!

Rebus, I have a few friends who support The Rangers but are not huns; they are a the stage of cringing with embarrassment when they see my smiling face because they know I will let them dance around other conversations before it eventually turns to football. Those are the guys I feel sorry for!

    Zero sympathy here.

I am friendly with a few Rangers men, talking to them about Rangers is impossible. They will not listen, except to what they think is good news.

They all have a sense of entitlement and can’t wait to put ” Celtic back in their place”.

Murray, was brilliant, so was Whyte, so was Green, so was King. They never learn.

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, fool me thrice, we are the people.

  19. Matchday Volunteer Managers

WOULD you like to be part of the Rangers team as a volunteer manager on matchdays?

If you’re a good communicator and have a strong commitment to the Light Blues we want to hear from you.

We are looking for volunteer fans to assist the club around the dug out and in the dressing room to act as a matchday contact for players, physio’s and talk to media pro-actively providing team formation and tactics and helping resolve any issues that our players may face with accuracy and efficiency.

Successful candidates will be Rangers supporters themselves so will be able to think like those that they’ll be helping. Volunteer managers. will have an engaging personality and be genuinely excited to help players. They’ll be patient, empathetic, and passionately communicative – they love to talk shit.

The target is to ensure excellent service standards and win the SPFL next season.

If you are over 18 ( or just born yesterday) and think you’ve got what it takes NowTheForever@StupidFC.co.uk explaining why you would make the perfect volunteer manager for the club.

    No Surrender.

I don’t think that any of the in situ directors have put one bent farthing into the pot.

In my twisted mind they are just being used to put a name to the unaccountable cash coming in from, perhaps a nearby offshore island and further afield.

Parks et al, never got where they are today by filling financial potholed.
