Emerging talent, Slovenian reaction, footballs morals

1393

Delighted to hear Ronny Deila is planning to rest players ahead of Tuesday’s Cup Final.  There is plenty to be gained from playing the next wave of Callum McGregors at Inverness tomorrow, and little to be lost in the league race.

Our unique position in world football, a club who are so massively bigger than all others they are not involved in a proper competition to win the league, has more drawbacks than advantages, but we need to exploit this position by developing emerging talent when the stars align.

The morning after the day before the Slovakian media were very respectful of Celtic.  There was an acceptance that their assessment of Celtic was based on two unrepresentative performances against Legia.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Slovenian coverage was the appreciation of the “modern football” Celtic played.  Assessments of Maribor’s chances in the return leg were pragmatic.  Expectations are low, but with the tie level, they know they still have a chance.  Hopes are, that Maribor’s misplaced optimism is viral, and that Celtic will be infected by the same disease.

Celtic’s job on Tuesday is to make sure they treat Maribor as though they were Bayern Munich.

Oh Malky.  You and I both know that football is remarkably indifferent to moral uncertainty, the actions over the last 24 hours of the thoroughly reprehensible League Managers’ Assocation testify to that.  Practically anything is forgiven or overlooked, but only up to a point.  Malky MacKay has been implicated in attacks against Chinese, Koreans, black people, gays and Jews, quite a unique full house.

Cardiff City have already leveraged this to obtain a grovelling apology and have now cost him a seven figure contract, offered by his friend at Crystal Palace.  Question is, after the controversy dies down and the obligatory contrition is served, will another club offer him a contract?  I don’t think so.

As far as the football industry is concerned, Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all.  He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff.

That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.

  1. I am another who does attend games, who would love to have the Green Brigade as part of our Home support.

Really disappointing again with our Boards attitude towards our Fans

    Hail Hail

    bawsman,

I expect auldheid will be making a statement very very soon, I prefer Auldheid and BRTH to be making the statements as they are seen as the level heads and generally don’t get as much grief or treated with as much animosity, our first preference would be for the club to make a statement but we’ll need to wait and see on that score.

The good news is we are still moving forward and some information previously overlooked has recently made quite a big difference for our argument.

    SOT,

Excellent, I must read his other one. Thanks.

    Paul 67, afternoon.

Yeah, makes sense to give Henderson a game for example. That said, Inverness isn’t on the moon. A couple of hours away. That is nothing.

  4. The GB statement seems designed to build pressure without closing off avenues.

You have to wonder what the insurmountable problems are. The idea that “they just don’t want us there” seems a stretch. I would guess that the issue of how they are policed and stewarded is a biggie.

I hope talks continue. We need their support and passion. They need to work with the club to guarantee standards will not be breached at home games in order to persuade the club and stewards to back off. It will take compromise but, as with a striker, it is a shame that the compromise from all sides has not yet been achieved.

  5. My friends in Celtic,

It would be prudent to “rest” our key players before a season defining game on Tuesday night.

It would be folly to risk playing our “strongest” team in a game which can be categorised by no stretch of the imagination as season defining.

    Let our managerial team manage.

    HH.

  6. People majoring on the word “rest” are missing the point. Its about having your first eleven in peak mental and physical condition for Tuesday night. A good Manager will look individually at all of his players and make a judgement on whether a trip to Inverness is likely to help or hinder them and act accordingly. To pick on one player in particular sending Callum McGregor up to play in Inverness would be arch stupidity.

  7. FFin’ “Hateley urges [Sevco] to pounce” on the Petrofac Training Cup:

“[Sevco] have to seize the initiative.” Now that Hearts are out.

“For me, I’d have said Hearts were the favourites although Rangers would obviously have been up there as well.”

    ——

“I never thought I would see the day when a second tier team in Scotland was the favourite in anyone’s eyes for a Scottish trophy over[Sevco].”

    ——

“Stop comparing us to Hearts…. We are not a diddy club”

    ——

“Hateley, who has been tipped recently to be the football director of the club”

    ——

    ” Absolutely ridiculas statement “

  8. pfayr ironically I agree with you but for different reasons. It is not about the money. The GB is an outward expression of many of us. Sometimes their youth and lack of real life brings disrepute to Celtic, that I can understand because I was that age a long time ago. What they bring to Celtic is our soul, our energy , our commitment and passion. My only criticism is when they believe their own hype, they are not bigger than Celtic. Get your act together PLC, get the GB back in paradise. GB make us proud not embarrased.

  9. kdc,

we will win the league at a canter…again. Regardless of CL/EL participation or not.

There is absolutely no need for us to play our strongest team tomorrow at all.

That is not the case in the CL/EL and despite how average Maribor were on Wednesday, losing to them or being knocked out, would be a massive blow to Celtic.

So why take any risk of injury to our strongest player’s in the game tomorrow?

We can and should IMO blood youngsters as often as possible. Give them experience. We’ll soon find out which of them have the temperament and skills to make it as a 1st teamer.

Rest all our “big” players tomorrow if only to prevent the potential for injury prior to Tuesdays game, to ensure we DO have our strongest team for a game of almost infinite more importance to the Club and I would hazard a guess to most of the support too, than that one tomorrow, where the result will make almost no difference at all to our eventual League position.

Now that seems simple and logical to me.

    HAIL! HAIL!

A lot of injuries are caused by lack of match fitness, you get that playing matches.

I think that is a real shame. You and Morrisey should be capable of updating without impatient posters barking at the messenger. In some ways, you risk the opposite reaction by leaving it to the “level-headed”, as some posters will suspect that the more rebellious members of the Res. 12 group are being sidelined and may not trust the others. We are a paranoid lot here on the internet.

  18. A few thoughts…..

First off, Gordon J, I have never met you, but I will say this: You are a good man.

We can feel free to criticize other humans for actions taken over which they have control. Malky is a topical case in point.

Gaza and so many others, who suffer from things they don’t control, they need our support. Folks with mental illnesses and addictions don’t chose to be that way. They don’t have control. I have (touch wood) so far not had to walk 10 yards in their shoes. Many of us are so fortunate. What kind of society are we, where we dismiss the pain of the weak and the sick?

Moving on….don’t know why the Green Brigade and Celtic haven’t reached an agreement. I do wonder, however, why other Celtic supporters – the vast majority of Celtic supporters, feel that they cannot make noise at a Celtic game. No GB, no singing? Really? When did we abdicate to the GB? Yes, they provide great theatre, but until the Club has guarantees as to certain behaviour within the stadium, maybe the remaining 40,000 could take some responsibility and act like Celtic supporters have for many, many decades. Make your own noise.

Moving further on……this is a blog. It is not real life. There are some bloggers who get somewhat emotional about their own posts, sometimes posting their thoughts a dozen times or more in the same day. That’s fine, it is their life.

However, see when they claim to be leaving the blog? Let them go. Stop begging them to stay. They tend to stay anyway.

    Just my 3 cents worth.

Off to work. I hope everyone – particularly folk like Gaza, has a good day.

    Ronnie

  26. bawsman @ 1249,

Whilst I understand what you are saying re match fitness, is there more likelihood of a player being injured due to a tackle in a match whilst gaining match fitness, or getting injured from sitting on the couch watching the match at home?

What I, and I think a few other posters, like Mullet and Co 2, are trying to say is, why take the chance of risk of injury to any of our players who would be guaranteed to start the game on Tuesday, when there is no need for them to play tomorrow.

Im sure the players would rather play tomorrow, I know I would have wanted to – i know not once in the thousands of times i have went onto the pitch to play whether 11s, 7s or 5s, did i do so thinking “I might get injured here” – but still. Surely eliminating the possibility, however slight, of injury is a better option for all concerned?

That should still be good enough.

Keep high energy ghuys, ( VVD, Lustig, Denayer, Stefan, McGregor, Beram, Anto, Jo Inge, Broonie??), for Tuesday.

Green Brigade – I would love them to have made it on Tuesday but IF they want to play by their own rules, not the club’s, then sorry, no-one is bigger than the club IMO.

  30. The token tim,

Teams that play a settled 11 and system bond and gel, and few would argue we need a bit of bonding and gelling in the team right now.

Playing a second string or weaker team in a league game this early in a season sends completely the wrong subliminal message to the squad, “it disnae realy matter”. That will lead to cups not really mattering, and down and down. Friendlies are the only games that don’t matter other than league games when the leagues in the bag, wrapped and waiting on the trophy. Mental attitude is hard to get right and easily undermined.

Might, could and what about injury….Injuries can happen at any time, the bus (prodan), the bath (someone recently, answers on a postcard), and especially in training when players are not totally switched on. I’d be interested to hear how many injuries we’ve picked up in training as opposed to games in recent years.

I’d play our Tuesday night team on Saturday. If we’re lucky enough to score one or two early, play keep ball the rest of the game

  31. Said it before and I’ll say it again.

I don’t think that EUFA would need too much of an excuse to fling the book at us, at this present time.

To reiterate, it takes two to tango and we have still to hear from the club. I do note that certain posters have already established blame.
