England, or Israel, or Sweden, or Iceland, striker search goes on

743

It’s probably rash to suggest Neil Lennon dismisses the inflated English market when trying to sign a striker in preference for the Continent.  Europe has plenty of quality leagues, and gifted players, but it also has plenty of scouts.

The tops leagues enjoy blanket analysis, which has consequences.  Our experience of Lassad and Miku suggests that if we can tempt a striker to move from the likes of Spain to Scotland there’s maybe a reason why.  Even the secondary leagues, such as Slovakia and Poland, are scouted extensively by German clubs, who are the most desired destination for most East European players.  The success rate in bringing targeted strikers to the club from Europe has been low, which had real consequences for this season.

So where does that leave us?  Second tier teams in second tier (but still good) leagues, like Vitoria Guimaraes, who we bought Amido Balde from (strikers at top Portuguese clubs are aiming for the sky), go back to the English Championship, or maybe a peripheral league, like Sweden or Israel, again, or Iceland.

Celtic proposition is not without merit, we will now be touting Champions League football under the noses of every prospect, but finding a player capable of delivering the talent for that stage is the central challenge to the club.

  6. Fair enjoyed the pool, europe destroyed the septics, and to see earl the pearl losing it was worth it, what a nob of a man.

    Many years ago I used to be a no bad pool player, played the 8 ball stuff, worked on the rigs, and spent most of my time playing the game, would work about one day in ten, spent the rest of the time playing pool, so inevitably got quite good at it.

    had a game a few weeks ago in the village, first for a few years, dearie me, it was like learning to walk again, nay wonder they practice all the time >}

    Always the same – seems a good deal till you add the extras and luggage allowance.

    I am actually getting to Barca £15 net cheaper with B.A. (luggage straight through) than the trip home with V+Jet2 (carry your bags).

    When I go back to Ireland, I always check out hte alternative airlines than the ryanair, I find that in general I can get their for the same with Eir Lingus, much better to fly with, even flew with BA once, was 40 more, but the trolly dollys were so much more attentive, well worth the few bob extra >}

    Its mainly the fitba I punt on. Like a wee dabble on the nags now and then though. :). What a player Hazard is!

    Ryanair (sky pirates) – flew Blackpool to Dublin with them (25mins max). Plane takes off climbing like mad – engines feather back and out come the trolly dollies pushing uphill.

    Plane levels out and 2mins later starts descending – trolly dollies are now charging downhill but still selling; tea, coffee, cans, scratch-cards etc. All the time I’m hoping I don’t have to use an oxygen mask…………………..

    didn’t have a pound coin on me! :-)

    he is that,

    Players like him are out there for much less than the 30m ? they paid for him.

    Spain is full of them.

    A number 10 is what we need, I have said this for years, win the midfield win the game, and all we need is a quality middy, and the rest will fall into place imo, but hey, what do I know.

    You canny blame them, their basic wage is so bad the rely on sales to make their wages up, they get 10% I believe of sales, that is split with all the crew, pilots as well, so on an average flight, it really doesn’t amount to much.

    I know a dolly in Dublin, she was on 600 euros a month basic, that was in 2008, and I know for a fact, she is still on less than 800 a month basic today, and he is creaming it in, he is good to animal charities mind you, when Mrs Tet ran one back in Ireland, he gave her a few bob over the years, so he is a nice man really >}

  13. Wonder how much hooper is enjoying his time at Norwich City, visiting the big stadiums sitting on the bench watching his team getting smacked of the park, he must be loving it !!!! HH

  14. Last night I watched Crystal Palace with Barry Bannan in the side against West Ham, tonight it was James McCarthy and Everton winning at Old Trafford, last month I also watched him against Liverpool and in the 3 games Barry Bannan impressed me the most although I must admit that young Ross Barkley had had me whetting my lips. He’ll be 20 tomorrow which got me thinking about other young Toffees who broke through at a young age, Wayne Rooney and James Vaughan.

    The latter was the youngest goalscorer in the Premier League overtaking Rooney and James Milner; look at where they are today although Milner amazes me as I can’t quite see the hype about him.

    JV it seems has lost his way and at 25 I feel we are overcritical on here on judging him, even Milner was sent out on loan before landing in Manchester.

    We signed a striker who had only scored 1 goal for his previous club who had paid 10m for him and was labeled a flop; he turned out to be a hunskelper extraordinaire.

    And before anyone says that he was a star before Chelsea let’s not forget that he suffered the ignominy of relegation with Blackburn scoring only 3 goals in 17 appearances.

    If we sign James Vaughan it will be because our wee mhan sees something in him and like big Sutty mibbees we should give him a chance as the talent that prompted Everton to sign him for their Youth Academy at 9 years of age may still be there.

    If he signed he would be given a chance, I feel now with the recent signings like bangura,miku,lassad,pukki and balde the fans are thinking here’s another guy who won’t score. We need a guy to score early and keep scoring to restore the faith HH

  16. Tontine Tim

    I agree with you about Vaughan. I have always liked him, as does a mate of mine who is an Everton fanatic.

  17. I’m sure Lenny has tried to sign Vaughan at least 2-3 times now, think once he turned us down and another time he was injured.

    The guy has an awful injury record and no where near decent goal scoring record.

  18. Hun Skelper,As I said the majority of these players had already been capped.I know there were plenty of clubs chasing Mathews,Ledley.They were not unknown.Just because we have not heard of them,means hee haw.Thats what scouts are for.

    You know I have said before our record in signing terrific defenders ,midfielders,is second to none.Strikers?????????An absolute disgrace,apart from Hooper.John Park is utterly hopeless at finding this player.Why that is,I have no idea.

    I do hope Fridjohnsen can do the job.We will see.

    L8 – F12 – A28 and 4pts above the Relegation Zone.

    I watched the Hudd v Burnley game the other night, and posted that Lenny was at the game asking who he was watching, was replied that it might have been the boy Ings from Burnley, the only player iI saw on the park was the boy Vaughn, didn’t score, but would run riot in scotland imo.

    In saying all that, we need a midfielder that can see a pass way before we spend on another striker, the ones we have may do better with better service, just an opinion.
