England, or Israel, or Sweden, or Iceland, striker search goes on

743

It’s probably rash to suggest Neil Lennon dismisses the inflated English market when trying to sign a striker in preference for the Continent.  Europe has plenty of quality leagues, and gifted players, but it also has plenty of scouts.

The tops leagues enjoy blanket analysis, which has consequences.  Our experience of Lassad and Miku suggests that if we can tempt a striker to move from the likes of Spain to Scotland there’s maybe a reason why.  Even the secondary leagues, such as Slovakia and Poland, are scouted extensively by German clubs, who are the most desired destination for most East European players.  The success rate in bringing targeted strikers to the club from Europe has been low, which had real consequences for this season.

So where does that leave us?  Second tier teams in second tier (but still good) leagues, like Vitoria Guimaraes, who we bought Amido Balde from (strikers at top Portuguese clubs are aiming for the sky), go back to the English Championship, or maybe a peripheral league, like Sweden or Israel, again, or Iceland.

Celtic proposition is not without merit, we will now be touting Champions League football under the noses of every prospect, but finding a player capable of delivering the talent for that stage is the central challenge to the club.

  3. I heard Stuart Dougal on Shortbread earlier. Two faced doesn’t describe the contempt I have for that man.

    As someone posted earlier it was fine for Bougherra to manhandle the ref but on this occasion the powers that be got it wrong in only dishing out a two match ban to Cifci.

    He also had a wee dig at players bringing in lawyers to defend them and mentioned his spat with Neil Lennon. You’d never guess his profession

  4. Anybody seen 4 better goals in the one game.Suarez was out of this world tonight.Laid on the 5th as well.

    My nephew went into the Celtic shop last week with his dad

    His dad wanted to buy him a poster of a superstar to put in his bedroom

    He left without one as there are none at Celtic park Nuff said

    Have to agree, my bhoy’s favourite player at the moment is Joe Ledley?? No disrespect but Joe is a fairly decent player though hardly poster superstar material!! Maybe we have been spoiled down the years Maestro Henrik Lubo etc etc , At the moment we don’t have a buzz player, someone the crowd connect with when they pick the ball up we get up from our seats! IMHO the least we deserve at Celtic park is to be entertained…. at the moment its dull tbh, give us a hooper type (Lee Tomlin) and creativity Gauld and Mc Kay Stevens please in January Neil HH!!

    Aye the dugs are good, had them out earlier, in shifts, canny take them out at the same time, they ignore me, the pack takes over, the bitch was her usual self, caught a hare, felt for it, gave her a good run, lost in the end sadly, but hey, that is what they do, saved me feeding her tonight.

    Mrs TET wan’t to go to britland on friday, no wantin to go but the boss rules, Albox it’s called, only an hour away, and a different world, there is a brit shop there, and they sell Ajax, the floor cleaner, not the club, and she has decided that it is the only thing that gets the tiles clean….I know, I know, but indulgence is a good thing is it not >}

    My father in law trained his dog to fetch a baton. One July afternoon in Scotstoun in the 70s, he let him off the leash to fetch their baton. You can imagine the chaos Sean the dug caused that day. :))

    Mine and me are fine. Granddaughter no. 1 who is at school and who is praying for your mum and mine, went to her first dance aged 7, last week. Scottish dance for St Andrew’s day. After I said “Hope you didn’t kiss any boys?” she replied. “No granda, I just kissed my best pal Clare!” :))

  21. delaneys,

    Great story about Sean the dug, seem to remember the boys in Chandlers causing serious damage to a drum on a Saturday afternoon about 20 odd years ago……in July of course.
