England, or Israel, or Sweden, or Iceland, striker search goes on

743

It’s probably rash to suggest Neil Lennon dismisses the inflated English market when trying to sign a striker in preference for the Continent.  Europe has plenty of quality leagues, and gifted players, but it also has plenty of scouts.

The tops leagues enjoy blanket analysis, which has consequences.  Our experience of Lassad and Miku suggests that if we can tempt a striker to move from the likes of Spain to Scotland there’s maybe a reason why.  Even the secondary leagues, such as Slovakia and Poland, are scouted extensively by German clubs, who are the most desired destination for most East European players.  The success rate in bringing targeted strikers to the club from Europe has been low, which had real consequences for this season.

So where does that leave us?  Second tier teams in second tier (but still good) leagues, like Vitoria Guimaraes, who we bought Amido Balde from (strikers at top Portuguese clubs are aiming for the sky), go back to the English Championship, or maybe a peripheral league, like Sweden or Israel, again, or Iceland.

Celtic proposition is not without merit, we will now be touting Champions League football under the noses of every prospect, but finding a player capable of delivering the talent for that stage is the central challenge to the club.

I give thanks daily to the Great God above who made sure I was born into a Celtic supporting family.

  2. iPaddy McCourt Supports Wee Oscar – I presume they mean 8p in the pound. That’s more than their predecessors gave to their creditors though so they should be delighted.

Over on FF the penny was dropping last night re the stunning retail deal that Green has signed with Ashley. Apparently the “club” gets a mere 8p per shirt sold and Chuck has tied them in to this stunning deal for 7 years. The good news though is that Chuck himself is on a nice earner with this deal.

And soon they won’t have any more penny’s to drop!

I always smile when anyone mentions McNee. I think of Big Billy banjoing him at Heathrow.

Imagine the row if NFL did the same to, say, Chick Young. Remember him greetin when Jim Murphy MP kicked him in a charity game. The best thing Murphy’s ever done IMO.

  7. the long wait is over on

There will be some fluctuations in their share price as uncertainty spooks possible investors , if any.

Interesting to see what the share price looks like on 18/19 December.

It seems there are a number of shareholders incl CG who are locked in and cant sell until 18 December – the AGM is on 19 December , which can’t be coincidental.

There are presumably already deals in place for share sales but nevertheless the true share value will presumably reflected in the trades on 18/19th Dec.

Made the same mistake with the trampoline years ago, left the safety netting up and it became a twelve foot kite, luckily it hit the garden brick wall, so no damage done.

It is interesting the Vanguard Bears – a small and secretive group rumoured to have links to Loyalist Paramilitaries – are backing the current Sevco board.

I’m at a loss as to why they would take this stance when all of the other Sevco supporters groups’ from The Sons of Struth to The Ministry of Funny Orange Walks, are trying to remove the board (don’t laugh).

No but McNee was/is an arrogant, ‘incompetent’ ( his favourite word) idiot.

    1) Celtic don’t need to build a 60000 seater stadium. They’ll never sell it out. 40000 will do.

    2) get off the line, you moron. To Hun on SSB who mischievously suggested that Huns should sign Judas. McNee told him it would never happen. We all know what happened 3 weeks later.

    3) he misled the whole nation during a game against Thems at Ibrox. He was the commentator but failed to notice that the referee had chalked off David Robertson’s ‘goal’. This went on for a good 10 minutes.

    4) EUFA CL when we beat Man Utd 1-0 to qualify for last 16 and McNee is on Scotsport. He again misleads the nation. “They’re not through yet but they’ve given themselves a great chance”.

As I said, he’s a total plank. I can see that you set great store by the informed comments of Gerry.

  17. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I dont think it will be easy to get Joe Ledley to sign a new contract as teams in the EPL can offer to double what Celtic can offer and Joe has tasted Champions league football and has won medals so he may well be tempted by the biggar money.I also think a striker valued at 6 million is an unlikely signing for us clubs know we have money from our transfer dealings in the summer and will put there value of players up accordingly that makes it difficult for us to get value for money we are likely in my opinion to be looking at players that the MSM have no idea about I think overall our signings have been good our one problem has been in relaceing Hooper but in Lennie I trust.H.H.
