England, or Israel, or Sweden, or Iceland, striker search goes on

743

It’s probably rash to suggest Neil Lennon dismisses the inflated English market when trying to sign a striker in preference for the Continent.  Europe has plenty of quality leagues, and gifted players, but it also has plenty of scouts.

The tops leagues enjoy blanket analysis, which has consequences.  Our experience of Lassad and Miku suggests that if we can tempt a striker to move from the likes of Spain to Scotland there’s maybe a reason why.  Even the secondary leagues, such as Slovakia and Poland, are scouted extensively by German clubs, who are the most desired destination for most East European players.  The success rate in bringing targeted strikers to the club from Europe has been low, which had real consequences for this season.

So where does that leave us?  Second tier teams in second tier (but still good) leagues, like Vitoria Guimaraes, who we bought Amido Balde from (strikers at top Portuguese clubs are aiming for the sky), go back to the English Championship, or maybe a peripheral league, like Sweden or Israel, again, or Iceland.

Celtic proposition is not without merit, we will now be touting Champions League football under the noses of every prospect, but finding a player capable of delivering the talent for that stage is the central challenge to the club.

Peter Lawwell is prepared to re-enter negotiations with Heerenveen in January for the transfer of Alfred Finnbogason. A deal for the Icelandic striker fell through in August after the Dutch club doubled their asking price, however, Lawwell has recognised the team needs a replacement for Gary Hooper and is prepared to push the boat out to buy Finnbogason, so Neil Lennon can bed him in before the European qualifiers in July.

Note: It is believed Lawwell would be willing to pay a maximum of £6 million for the striker.

    Re Nir Biton

It looks to me as though his natural style is to recycle the ball quickly which has been missing in our midfield for some time . Also noticed he was quick to move into threatening forward positions though generally was ignored. May need time for the others to be aware of the option he offers.

  4. Striker search? Perhaps the number 10 should be the priority. Lee Tomlin? He is like Paddy on steroids.

  5. Tallybhoy……….. Thanks for that you are correct Mark Antoine Fortune was the player we paid 4.5 million for or the striker that never was.

  8. Bonsoir my fellow CQN rascals,

I spent a bit of time yesterday posting some videos of Shunsuke Nakamura in action in the J-League. Finished with a plea for the Celtic scouts to advise NL to make a move for Yoichiro Kakitani.

I’m sure they will be well aware of him. Japanese international, he will go to Brazil. One good performance in WC and he is miles out of our reach – £10m perhaps. At the moment he could go for £3m from Cerezo Osaka, the same club that produced the brilliant Shinji Kagawa. Kakitani is a friend and contemporary of Kagawa and was considered the superior talent as a youngster.

He fits our model, 23, huge sell on value (I know, I know) but most importantly he is comprehensively brilliant in almost every aspect of forward play.

It makes no sense to me to shop in the Championship market, except for quicker settling in purposes. Put it this way, if Japan draw England, Kakitani will likely play alongside Honda and Kagawa and will in my opinion outshine the likes of Wellbeck, Sturridge quite easily.

27 goals for club and country this season, not a single penalty. A player of flair, movement, balance and awareness. Ice cool finisher. He also has the gallusness of James McFadden at his peak.

Can anyone get me John Park on the phone? Kakitani is the man. At number 9 or 10.

    TJ

  9. hun skelper: maybe he will come good? Seemed confident and loving signing for us in his first interview.

  10. Tommy: apparently Arsenal, Inter and Galatasaray are in for Kakitani.

    Damn you lurkers out there!

  11. I honestly cannot recall a genuine regular goalscoring youngster we have produced in the last two decades. Mark Burchill was about the closest to a natural striker who found the net anywhere approaching ‘regularity’.

I don’t remember the last Scottish proven goalscorer for any club at a high level. Boyd for Killie and OldCo Gers couldn’t perform in Europe or against Celtic but was a ‘finisher’ of sorts.

Scotland used to have a lot of top goalscorers. We used to go and get players from lesser scottish clubs who would then bang the goals in for the Hoops. Would Russell or Fletcher have grown in to those players?

I think we are going to have to get very very lucky to find the regular finisher we all crave. In fact we would like and need two.

Are we doing something wrong at youth level? Why are the young finishers not coming through? Are teams better at denying space and time to strikers? Do we coach them wrong? On Sunday I saw Stokes on the halfway line chasing a ball when we had the back 4 and midfield in place to deal with it. We won it back and he strolls in to the middle of the park. OK, he’s ‘working hard’ there but I don’t like to see strikers that deep when they should be looking for goals. If you are 1-0 up late on in a game, fair enough, defend from the front but stokes and our other strikers spend too much time out wide and dropping deep for my liking.

    Tommy Joad,

I don’t think that any player who is assured of his place at the WC, is going to put himself through the upheaval of settling into a new club, a new country, especially a new continent, six months before the tournament.

  17. Rocket Man,

He trained with both Inter and Arsenal as a youngster hence the continuing links.

As far as I’m aware they have never made their interest concrete. Clearest link to date has been with Werder Bremen, Bundersliga have a huge number of Bundesliga exports.

I believe if he is made no1 priority, Celtic could get him. And what a wonderful signing he would be.
